Gun control generally refers to laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of any firearms. A lot of people think that owning guns should be presumably fine. When possessing a gun, people should know all the laws and policies that come with owning a gun. Each state has different laws with carrying a concealed weapon.
As an American citizen the Second Amendment gives everyone the right to bear arms. The United States, with less than 5 percent of the world’s population, has about 35-50 percent of the world’s civilian-owned guns, in 2007. It ranks number one in firearms per capita. The U.S. also has the highest homicide-by-firearm rate among the world’s most developed nations. This year being …show more content…
Yes guns are very dangerous to have, but what most people do not realize is how guns are also used as a safety blanket. Many times families will own a gun if they live in the city with gang activity present. Therefore many people feel the need to own a gun for safety reasons. Living in any city is already dangerous, so many times people will already carry a gun. I think having a gun to keep your family safe, is completely different then just having a gun for no reason. Several perspectives are tied into why people own guns in their homes.
The geography is one of the many perspectives as to why guns are in households. Pew Research has found that 27% in the Northeast, 35% in the Midwest, 38% in the South, and 34% in the West all own guns in their households (Morin). All the percentages are almost the same but Midwest having the highest percentage, of owning a gun in the household. The Midwest is home to several cities but most of the Midwest containing smaller cities than the other regions. When you live in a neighborhood were gang activity is present then a family must find a way to protect themselves. Gun Control or People Control?

...Mark Ortiz 9.2 Persuasive essay final draft Gun control or people control? Society should be against a gun ban because people should be able to protect themselves. Why should honest, law-abiding citizens lose their rights and freedoms because there are people who violate laws? The failure to obey laws is here to stay. What we have to do is deal with those people on a separate basis, not take away the things they disobey the law with. A gun ban will only keep the 'good guys' from obtaining firearms. Bad guys will always have ways of getting weapons. New gun laws will not do much in stopping them. A gun is an inanimate object. It is a tool, just like a baseball bat, a knife, screwdriver, or hammer. Any of these are as dangerous as a gun; they all have the potential to kill. Guns do not kill people, people kill people. If a gun is sitting on a table it does nothing. It is not capable of committing a crime; until a person decides to pick it up and use it. You cannot blame and an inanimate object for any type of wrong doing. You have to blame the user. Without someone controlling the item, it is not possible for it to do anything at all. If guns commit crimes, then pencils misspell words and spoons make people fat. There are a lot of falsities said about guns. Most of them are derived from fear of the unknown. There are a lot of people that talk about gun control, yet have never owned a gun and know nothing about guns. One of falsities is the gun show loophole. Just like going...

...11 Position Papers I f you like to argue, you will enjoy writing position papers and argument essays. The purpose of a position paper or argument essay is to explain both sides of a controversy and then argue for one side over the other. This two-sided approach is what makes position papers and argument essays different from commentaries (Chapter 10). A commentary usually only expresses the author’s personal opinion about a current issue or event. A position paper or argument essay explains both sides and discusses why one is stronger or better than the other. Your goal is to fairly explain your side and your opponents’ side of the issue, while highlighting the differences between these opposing views. You need to use solid reasoning and factual evidence to persuade your readers that your view is more valid or advantageous than your opponents’ view. In college, your professors will ask you to write position papers and argument essays to show that you understand both sides of an issue and can support one side or the other. In the workplace, corporate position papers are used to argue for or against business strategies or alternatives. The ability to argue effectively is a useful skill that will help you throughout your life. 221 CHAPTER AT–A–GLANCE Position Papers This diagram shows two basic organizations for a position paper, but other arrangements of these sections will work too. Judicial System and Juveniles

...Persuasive Essay The young people in the United States of America are motivated to do bad things like robbing, killing, drug dealing and other felonies. These minors commit serious crimes, but the law is soft with them. So they continue in the streets robbing and killing because they know that nothing will happen to them because, simply put, they are minors. I think if a minor kills a human being they should be killed as well, regardless of age. As a minor you should know it’s wrong to take another life. There was one crime in particular that caught my eye and I believe it was called the Pearl High School shooting in Pearl, Mississippi. Sixteen year old Luke Woodham woke up on October 1st, 1997 and stabbed his mother to death as she peacefully slept in her bed. After stabbing her, he drove his dead mom’s car to school, walked in the front door of the school, and opened fire. After a couple minutes of shooting he got back into his moms van and tried driving off. The school principal had a gun in his car so he retrieved it and somehow stopped Luke. He asked Luke why he shot his kids and Luke replied “Life has wronged me, sir.” A couple minutes before the shooting started he gave this message to a friend "I am not insane, I am angry. I killed because people like me are mistreated every day. I did this to show society, push us and we will push back. All throughout my life, I was ridiculed, always beaten, always hated. Can you, society, truly blame me for what I do? Yes, you...

Rhetorical Analysis Essay

...Assignment #3: Rhetorical Analysis Essay ENG: Section 1105 The Backwards Robe Phenomenon I believe almost everyone in the United States, and even other countries, have heard about the Snuggie (http://www.mysnuggiestore.com/). The Snuggie epidemic is definitely contagious, myself admitting that I even own one. Infomercials have been around for decades, but the Snuggie was definitely a game-changer in that world. From the many commercials that give most of us a few laughs, to seeing almost every living room with a Snuggie draped over their couch or recliner. It's safe to say that the Snuggie is one of the most successful infomercials today, acquiring around $400 million dollars in sales and ranking number 8 on the best seller list. The backwards robe does an amazing job in the commercial for advertisement, showing you that you can go anywhere in your Snuggie and you're able to keep your arms warm and functional, but is it really that necessary of a product? I believe that the goofiness of the infomercial is part of what has made it so successful. The product itself is silly as well, which makes it more memorable than the Slap-Chop or the Ove Glove. The infomercial still uses logos in knowing that it is soft fleece, and does have a reasonable refund date along with a reasonable price. While watching the commercial over again on the internet, I almost feel like they take it too far and it ends up just being cheesy. It seems very outdated, even though it isn't more than 10 years...

Violent Video Games

...Research/Persuasive Essay Violent Video Games “Children on Murder Simulators:” Violent Video Games as Practice for Real Life A very controversial issue in today’s world is violent video games. Do they have an affect on adolescents? Do they influence their actions and thoughts? Over the past couple of years there have been cases of school shootings. In particular the Columbine High School Shooting and Virginia Tech Massacre were both influenced by violent video games. In the Columbine High School shooting, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot and killed thirteen people and then killed themselves. At Virginia Tech, Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed thirty-three people, including himself, and injured twenty-three others (School 1). Violent video games played a major role in these school shootings because the games were tools used to practice there plan and give them the ideas for the weapons they would use and how they would use them. Harris and Klebold attended Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. When the two teens had planned the attack it was intended for propane tanks to detonate that they left in the cafeteria in duffle bags. “According to the report released by the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office, the tanks contained sufficient explosives power to ‘kill the majority of students’ who would be in the cafeteria for lunch” (Columbine 1). The tanks did not discharge as the boys anticipated. When...

Rhetorical modes simply mean the ways in which we can effectively communicate through language. This chapter covers nine common rhetorical modes. As you read about these nine modes, keep in mind that the rhetorical mode a writer chooses depends on his or her purpose for writing. Sometimes writers incorporate a variety of modes in one essay. In covering the nine rhetorical modes, this chapter also emphasizes these as a set of tools that will allow you greater flexibility and effectiveness in communicating with your audience and expressing your ideas. rhetorical modes The ways in which we effectively communicate through language. 1.1 The Purpose of Narrative Writing Narration means the art of storytelling, and the purpose of narrative writing is to tell stories. Any time you tell a story to a friend or family member about an event or incident in your day, you engage in a form of narration. In addition, a narrative can be factual or fictional. A factual story is one that is based on, and tries to be faithful to, actual events as they unfolded in real life. A fictional story is a made-up, or imagined, story; the writer of a fictional story can create characters and events as he or she sees fit. However, the big distinction between factual and fictional narratives is based on a writer’s purpose...

...Tourism Essay Tourism is undoubtedly the single largest industry in the world and contributes vast amounts of revenue into any given country. In New Zealand alone, tourism accounted for 10.2% of Gross Domestic Product in 1996 or in dollar terms $11.78 billion (Collier, 1999). In 1999, half a billion people traveled worldwide which indicates the huge scale of the tourism industry. And the speed of tourism growth is also outstanding - airplane numbers have increased thirty times since 1960 and in the last fifteen years the number has doubled. And the amount of international tourists is also increasing rapidly. In 1939 there were only one million tourists worldwide whereas in 1999 there were more than one million international tourists from New Zealand alone (Otago University Resource, 2001). After understanding how large the tourism industry is and the speed it is growing at, it is necessary to then learn about the associated impacts from tourism. The impacts are divided into three categories: economic, socio-cultural and environmental and each impact can create either a positive or negative outcome. Obviously the most important impacts that need to be dealt with are the negative ones. Throughout this essay each different impact will be explained and an example provided. It will also indicate how important it is for a tourism manager to be aware of these impacts and how they could possibly minimise or eliminate any of these adverse effects. Custom Essay on Tourism ! Business

...this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are...

Biology Observation

...#3). The culminating project was the students developing a 30 second Public Service Announcement (PSA) on the drawbacks of energy drinks. The final part of this unit dealt with positive and negative feedback systems and how the body responds to changes in homeostasis. A discussion began with of how positive and negative feedback mechanisms maintain homeostasis in the body. Students read scenarios and drew graphs from tables to determine if the feedback was positive or negative and drew conclusions on how homeostasis was effected. Next, the students participated in an exercise lab in which they measured their resting vital signs including blood pressure, heart rate, and pulse and compared them to their post activity vitals. They discussed why the body’s homeostasis was disrupted and how it was restored. The last portion of this unit discussed how the circulatory and respiratory systems is an application of cell transport as well as how they maintain the body’s natural balance. Some of the challenges with this unit were understanding microscopic structures in the cell, cell membranes moving substances across the cell, and being able to find effective scientific research when looking at energy drinks to apply them to the topic of homeostasis. In order to understand microscopic cells, students labeled cells in their interactive notebooks, looked at onion cells under the microscope. They drew a diagram of the cell membrane, labeling the parts, models were used to demonstrate cell...

Bullying at School

...major problems for our society. Nothing good comes out of bullying. It could very well change or ruin a person’s life. In fact, it does ruin many people’s lives. Kids can be mentally scarred if they are teased often. Even worse, they could be killed or fatally injured if the bullying gets extreme. There are many causes for bullying which must be taken care of before bullying can be stopped. T.V. violence, families in poverty, and mis-teachings are just several of the many serious causes for bullying. Bullying must be stopped or prevented no matter how long it will take, it is a deeply concerning matter. Bullying does not always have to be childish play, it can be extremely violent. People may be bruised, injured, or even killed. Kids under bad influence may turn very violent. Parents, relatives, friends, T.V., music and pictures may all influence people, especially when they are depressed or are in a lowered state of mind. Violence on T.V. is a very big influence, particularly the wrestling and fighting shows. Also, T.V. shows are quite readily available for anyone to watch. Kids may try “moves” on people at school because they believe it’s cool. As well, cooperation from childrens’ parents is important, some parents actually encourage their children to fight to look cool or don’t teach them properly. Kids must take their own initiative, as well, they must find out what’s wrong and what’s right for themselves sometimes. Many kids don’t take bullying seriously. However, when a real...

GEIGER ELLIS, ED.D., E D I T O R S : UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, EMERITUS and ARTHEA J. S. REED, PH.D., UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, RETIRED A Teacher’s Guide to the Signet Classic Edition of George Orwell’s Animal Farm 2 INTRODUCTION Animal Farm is an excellent selection for junior and senior high students to study. Although on one level the novel is an allegory of the 1917 Russian Revolution, the story is just as applicable to the latest rebellion against dictators around the world. Young people should be able to recognize similarities between the animal leaders and politicians today. The novel also demonstrates how language can be used to control minds. Since teenagers are the target not only of the educational system itself but also of advertising, the music industry, etc., they should be interested in exploring how language can control thought and behavior. Animal Farm is short and contains few words that will hamper the reader’s understanding. The incidents in the novel allow for much interactive learning, providing opportunities for students to dramatize certain portions, to expand on speeches, and to work out alternative endings. The novel can be taught collaboratively with the history department as an allegory of the Russian Revolution, allowing students to draw parallels...

I can attest to the fact that it is has been the greatest and most influential invention of the 20th century with the exception of the internet. My parents have been changing the television sets since they bought the first one in the 1970’s. Its development has really played a great role in most people lives. The quality of what is being aired on the television has really developed since the medium was introduced in the society. I always see the television as a good source of the most broadly-shared images and messages of the history. Advancement in technology has really transformed the ways of communication. Last month I asked my grandmother what it was like growing up without the television. She told me how they used to tell each other stories since it was the only way of keeping them busy on their free time. She also told me that they had messengers who used to deliver messages to the different communities. Introduction of the television has really changed this for the better. Viewing time and saturation has increased over the years. The television mass rituals have also become very strong and show no signs of weakening its hold. There have been introduction of new types of delivery...
