This attention-grabbing noun is used throughout the world in the continuing feminist protest that has started since May 2011: Slutwalks. It all began when Michael Sanguinetti, a Toronto police constable, made a statement on how women should not “dress like sluts” in order to be safe from being sexually assaulted at a safety forum in Osgoode Hall Law School on January 24th 2011. His words infuriated many, and Sonya Barnett and Heather Jarvis, Co-founders of Slutwalk Toronto, decided to take action to disaffirm the victim-blaming claim. Originally expected to be a small-scale protest, Slutwalk drew attention and became a worldwide phenomenon, which also triggered both positive and negative responses; Jessica Valenti, Gail Dines, Wendy J Murphy and Keli Goff all published articles to express their opinions. Valenti supported Slutwalk in her essay, “Slutwalks and the Future of Feminism,” whereas Dines and Murphy’s “SlutWalk is not sexual liberation” and Goff ‘s “Dear feminists, Will You Also Be Marching In N***erwalk? The first recorded evidence of induced abortion was from the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus in 1550 BC. The history of abortion goes back as we can see but it is not until the 1800’s that laws forbade the act after 16 weeks of conception. By the early 1900’s the act was completely outlawed but even at that women were still having abortions. The discussion of whether abortion should or shouldn’t be legalized is a very sensitive. Currently, Kenya is going through the process of acquiring a new constitution, one of the contentious issues in the draft is the issue on whether the constitution is legalizing abortion or not. Molina left Mexico with her children to the U.S. in search of a chance to work in a factory owned by a woman from her home town. She planned to return to Mexico in six months after earning enough money to open up her own sewing shop. When she arrived in Southern California, her new boss confiscated her ID and birth certificate, and threatened that if she tried to run away to the police, she would be incarcerated. At that moment Molina became a victim of human trafficking. “When I came to this country, I came with a lot of dreams,” she says. “But when I arrived I realized that my dreams were dead. I was in the darkness with no hope and no light.” Up to 27 million innocent women, young children, and even men are trafficked around the world each year. Conversely, the ideas and lyrics of many songs fall into these genres tend to be violent, offensive, vulgar and sexist. We can see that sexism in rap music is apparent through the negative portrayal of women found in both the lyrics and music videos. This is an important issue because rap is so popularized today that these negative depictions of women, especially African American women, is potentially giving its viewers the idea that it is acceptable to treat women in such demeaning ways. Most of the time, we do not comprehend the message that is being sent through songs we listen to. We as society need to become more conscious of the music we listen to. Over the years, rap and rap music videos have repetitively become more and more sexual and degrading towards women. Rap has been criticized various times for this reason. I would have felt more secure and confident if I was to know that a legalized weapon was around for our protection. Through research, why concealed carry laws should be implied into every state's legislation will be debated and each point of view will be expressed.
