School Start Times

I believe that school should start later, at 8:45 AM.
I think that school should start at 8:45 AM everyday because the average teenager needs nine to ten hours of sleep a night. Another reason school should start later is because students tend to fall asleep in their first hour class because they didn’t get enough sleep to stay awake. Another reason that school should start at 8:45 is that every teenager releases a sleep inducing hormone called melatonin around 10:45 to 11:00 PM. A new, later schedule would also be easier on the bus drivers who have to wake up at 4:00 AM every morning to drive children to school. Students would be more awake as well for tests that take place early in the

Persuasive Essay On School Start Time

...Schools should have an early start time, because if it started late it would mess up everyone’s schedule. It would be even more difficult for parents to bring you to school every day. For a regular family it would completely mess everything up. According to Should School Stay Early written by Teennink Web, “It means changing a teens whole schedule, which in many cases is nearly impossible.” Parents have work at 8 am a 7:45 start time would be perfect. If school started at 8:30 what would they do? If you had a sports practice at 5 and school ends at 5:30, what would you do? Any way you put it later school would mess up a family’s schedule. Day times can be big issues. Changing school hours is easier said than done. If school start two hours...

...of South Dakota I had attended O’Gorman Catholic High School where I received a wonderful English education. I believe I had received the best English education that any high school student could have. I personally believe that I have grown in my writing. I do know that I have some problem areas in my writing, however. When I start with a rough draft I always write in first person. I have some trouble with my grammar, but I continue to grow as I further my education. My Media essay, “Sexism Manifest in The Arena”, dealt with the issue of how prevalent sexism is in our society even in popular public figures like Hilary Clinton. In my RBAA essay I talked about how America needs to correctly respond to the intimidating terrorist group, ISIS....

Whats Up

...section Vi essay forms Many people use the term “essay” to mean any paper written for a class. In actuality, there are many different types of essays, each of which has a unique purpose, form, and style. We call these different types of essays “modes of discourse,” and they include expository, persuasive, and comparecontrast essays to name just a few. This section of the Guide has a dual purpose. First, various types of essays are described and suggestions are included about how to approach each particular type of writing. Second, the sample essays are good tools for you to see how these different essays look in their final form. These are not templates (no essay can be a carbon copy of another even in form), but they will give you a good idea of what a final piece of writing for each mode of discourse looks like. It would be advantageous to critically analyze the form and content of each sample against the instruction for how to write each type of essay. chapter 21 expository essays Jennifer propp An expository essay explains something using facts rather than opinions. The purpose of this type of essay is to inform an audience about a subject. It is not intended to persuade or present an argument of any kind. Writing this type of essay is a good way to learn about all the different perspectives on a topic. Many students use the expository essay to explore a variety of topics, and do so in a wide range of formats, including “process” and “definition”...

Unemployment Persuasive Essay

...the US Department of Labor; unemployment has risen this year to 7.3 %, which is 0.8 points higher than last year. Economists are very sure that unemployment ratio will never be at 0%, however, there is hope that the rates can become much lower. Americans are laid off their jobs daily, reducing households to single income families are even no income. This long-lasting economic effect has knocked on the door of home and affected my family as well as other hardworking citizens. One writer stated, “Too often unemployment affects not only unemployed individuals but also members of their immediate families.”(Aber, 1997). In this essay I will discuss how unemployment has affected my family, how my family is coping with this issue and what positive movements the economy is working on to recover from this problem. What is your thesis? This is a persuasive essay, so I am expecting a point of view. Merely implying is not clear enough. You must be as clear as possible. In January 2013, my husband was laid off from his job with no warning. His supervisor approached him after his shift and was told him that the company was downsizing and his position was no longer needed. The supervisor gave him his last paycheck, and encouraged him to file for unemployment benefits. Unemployment benefits will not equal half of his income when he was working. The struggles in finances became stressful to my family because I am the only one bringing home a steady income...

...CHAP TER Rhetorical Modes 1. NARRATION L E A R N I N G O B J E C T I V E S 10 1. Identify the purpose and structure of narrative writing. 2. Recognize how to write a narrative essay. Rhetorical modes simply mean the ways in which we can effectively communicate through language. This chapter covers nine common rhetorical modes. As you read about these nine modes, keep in mind that the rhetorical mode a writer chooses depends on his or her purpose for writing. Sometimes writers incorporate a variety of modes in one essay. In covering the nine rhetorical modes, this chapter also emphasizes these as a set of tools that will allow you greater flexibility and effectiveness in communicating with your audience and expressing your ideas. rhetorical modes The ways in which we effectively communicate through language. 1.1 The Purpose of Narrative Writing Narration means the art of storytelling, and the purpose of narrative writing is to tell stories. Any time you tell a story to a friend or family member about an event or incident in your day, you engage in a form of narration. In addition, a narrative can be factual or fictional. A factual story is one that is based on, and tries to be faithful to, actual events as they unfolded in real life. A fictional story is a made-up, or imagined, story; the writer of a fictional story can create characters and events as he or she sees fit. However, the big distinction between factual and fictional narratives is based on a writer’s purpose...

Literacy Experience Of Writing-Personal Narrative

...When I was in third grade, I remember learning how to write in cursive. At this point of time cursive was being taught in school. My mom would buy the practice workbooks for writing in cursive. Another literacy experience I remember is learning my multiplication. At school, we would sing songs, solve on paper and they would also time us on how many multiplication problems we can answer in a certain amount of time. Lastly, another literacy experience I remember is learning how to write an essay. I believe I learned how to write an essay in middle school. Learning how to write an essay was helpful because you would be continuing to write essays in high school and in college. I was happy that I learned how to write in cursive because it became helpful for me later on. In fourth grade, I moved back to New Orleans and started to go to school down there. In New Orleans after third grade you cannot write in print. I use to have to write everything the teacher put on the board. I didn’t have a problem writing everything in cursive though my hand would start hurting. Then eventually I moved to Florida with my aunt and my cousins. Sometimes I felt like I was a step ahead of everybody because people my age didn’t know how to write in cursive. Some of them were never taught to write in cursive. Even though many people didn’t know cursive too well I was...

Once the writers are lucid about the technique of writing an essay and how to write an essay outline, the next step that they face up to is how to move toward a particular research paper topic. And what type of writing works best? Students often complain about a certain type of essay they have been assigned with. It seems to them that writing within essay type boundaries doesn’t allow them to think out the box, limits their potential. But writing a paper without any directions could be even more confusing than the class assignment you got. Reasons to Go to Wgu

...Informative and Persuasive Essay Western Governors University LAE1 Informative and Persuasive Essay “What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the human soul” (Addison, 1839, p. 76). The pull to become a masterpiece was both exhilarating and unnerving. I knew it was time to continue furthering my education, but the fact that I had a full time job and a busy schedule gave me an excuse to keep putting it off. Year after year, I churned out more and more excuses; the truth was, the factors to consider when choosing an online university were many and overwhelming, and I was afraid to start. I finally launched into research mode and began searching in earnest for “the perfect fit.” After much courting and wooing by several universities offering online programs, three major factors influenced my decision to become a Western Governors University (WGU) student. These are an excellent online support system, a unique competence based approach to learning, and affordability. I urge you to carefully consider these factors; you too will be convinced that WGU is the choice to make. WGU offers an excellent and unique support system to students. The availability of online education promises the ease and flexibility of independent learning. In addition, this is coupled with the availability of qualified human resources to help you stay on track. Truthfully, not many of us are disciplined enough to...

Persuasive Essay

... December 11, 2015 Period: 6 AP English 3 Persuasive Essay #10 College is that step into adulthood. You live on your own, make decisions by yourself, and etc. Many college students have the burden of student loans. On top of that they want to work hard for good grades. Making one mistake in college can honestly affect you for the rest of your life. Classes and teachers are way tougher than they are in high school. So do you think it is really necessary to have them do extra community service? College students should not be required to do community service. First, college students shouldn’t be allowed to do community service because of keeping up with a good academic record. Grades are an important factor in college. You honestly can’t afford to slack off. Statistics states,” 75% of college students suffer from major anxiety”. Focusing is a major priority for all your classes if you want to strive for good grades. You need to work consistently on reports or essays and study so that the material is a known thing to you. As a matter of fact, college students shouldn't be allowed to do community service because of limit of time with students who do sports. Most people don’t go to college just for education but to pursuit of a sport with a scholarship. A NYU student stated, “I have a scholarship for crew and practices are at least 5 hours, I have barely have no time for school work let alone do anything else”. “I also have to maintain a 3.6 GPA or...

Persuasive Essay

...Christina Clarke Period 8 English Honors Persuasive Essay Students attend school everyday of the week and stay there for many hours. School should start later on in the morning. It should start later because kids would be more awake and willing to learn, students in Paramus Catholic have to travel far distances every morning, and it allows kids to get a couple more hours of sleep. If school started later, mornings for students and parents would be less stressful because there wouldn’t be as much of a rush. Paramus Catholic starts at 7:45 A.M. That is very early in the morning. Most students are not fully woken up yet when they start learning. How are kids supposed to be asked to complete an algebra or history test that early in the morning when their brains aren’t fully functioning? Students would be more willing to learn because they won’t be in a grumpy mood. They’ll be awake and the teachers can get more accomplished. Paramus Catholic Regional High School consists of students from 120 different towns. Students who live a half hour or even an hour away have to wake up extremely early just to get to school on time. Some student’s have to take the public bus. The students at Paramus Catholic get dismissed very early. Instead of making the students arrive to school so early in the morning, the faculty can make school start later and the students will get dismissed later on in the after noon. Another good reason why getting dismissed later on in the afternoon...

...#essay 1 #Miaoshu Jiang #07/09/2012 When I was a little girl, I loved bedtime stories, especially those in Andersen's Fairy Tales. My mom often read them for me, but, most of the time, I enjoyed reading them myself. While I was proud of the ugly duckling who eventually evolved to a gorgeous swan, happy for Cinderella who suffered so much but found her prince in the end, and sorry for the little match girl who was found frozen to death on the last night of the old year, I was impressed by the author’s solid knowledge of literature. He easily controlled my mood by merely applying some simple words. At that time, I thought literacy equaled a good story. As time went by, I started to study in a primary school. Somehow, I went to a composition class in grade four and became the best student in that class by the end of that semester. However, at first, I did not understand the assignments. In my mind, I still loved stories, and all I wanted to write were lovely stories. However, a description of a building was the first required assignment. Since stories were the only writing style I knew, it made me so confused that I even did not know how to start . Nevertheless, I had no choice but tried to observe, touch and feel the object that I was going to write. Gradually, I found I fell in love with the process of watching before writing. It made me understand that literacy was not just a good story but came from a thorough observation of life. Quickly I became a high school...

...Writing to Convince Argumentative and Persuasive Essays Sometimes we write to defend an opinion, to argue against somebody’s point of view, or to convince readers why and how we think a certain problem should be settled. The argument we develop should be a logical, properly thought-out presentation of ideas that makes a claim about an issue and supports that claim with evidence. Within this general frame, our argument consists of four basic components: (1) an issue, (2) a claim, (3) support, and (4) a recognition and refutation of the opposing view. A. The Issue. An argument is concerned with an issue – a case (like war, smoking, cloning, etc.) on which people hold opposite or different opinions. To build a convincing argument about an issue, it is essential that we be aware of the audience we are addressing: • Agreeing audience: When you write to people who already agree with your claim, the focus is usually to urge them to take a specific action and build emotional ties with them. • Neutral audience: In writing to a neutral audience, try to emphasize the importance of the issue and offer explanations that clear up your readers’ questions or misunderstandings about, or lack of interest in it. • Disagreeing audience: The most challenging audience combines people whose viewpoints contrast with yours; they may be hostile to your claim and have strong feelings about the issue. In writing to a disagreeing audience, your goal is to convince readers to consider...
