Subject: Investment Recommendation
The investment team recommends that $1 million of funding should be awarded to Startsmall over Healthyeat. Startsmall’s primary objective is to provide microloans and microbusiness training and support to low-income individuals in Central and South America. The team assessed the Startsmall’s viability of based on the following criterion: 1. Industry Trends – From an industry perspective, the microfinance industry has faced some headwinds due to pressure from activists accusing institutional lenders of profiteering from the poor. In response to this negative perception, Startsmall’s innovative approach to build a crowdfunding platform provides a new avenue for lower income individuals with access to 1-3% interest. Results from more established players such as Kiva demonstrates a 98% repayment rate which affirms that the crowdfunding approach is a sustainable business model. 2. Financial Impact – The team expects an 8% return on equity based on the assumption that Smallstart will remain a profit generating business. The team forecasts a 4.0-5.0x M-o-M if the company can expand its use base to approximately 500,000 clients in the next 4 years. With a sizeable customer base across South and Central America, regional banks who are actively seeking profitable microfinance ventures would be interested to acquire Startsmall at a premium valuation. 3. Social Impact – In comparison to Healthyeat, Startsmall’s funding usage demonstrates a higher multiplier effect on creating social impact. The company aims to develop new technology that can dramatically increase the efficiency of loan serving and lower costs per client. This new initiative could improve access to microloans and therefore provide more opportunities for low income individuals to set up or expand their businesses. As a result, the growth of the SME industry would contribute to the local economy’s vitality. 4. Management Team – Smartsmall’s management team is young and energetic. The CEO’s startup experience in building the microfinance division at the World Bank exhibits a higher inclination towards innovation and growth. Although Healthyeat’s management team has more industry knowledge and access to senior members of government, their lack of entrepreneurship experience could lead to challenges in rolling out their business into the US.
The team foresees some political risks associated with the investment in Startsmall. We expect that political uncertainty, potential changes in financial regulations and red-tape in less developed Central and South American markets can impede the expansion of Startsmall into lesser developed markets in the region. The firm may also face stiff competition from government-subsidized local micro financing organizations, creating higher barrier to entries for external players to penetrate into the local market. One solution to mitigate these political and bureaucratic risks is to launch briefing sessions with the relevant authorities on Startsmall’s value proposition and preference to work in tandem with local governments to develop the small-medium enterprise industry.
Based on Smartsmall’s robust financial and social impact forecasts, innovative business model of transition towards a crowdfunding platform and their management team’s technical knowledge and entrepreneurship experience, the investment team seeks your approval for a $1 million investment.

They are also one of the few Credit Unions that hold free monthly educational seminars for the community and they have a large marketing base. ...MEMORANDUM TO: John Berger, Manager FROM: John Creede, Manufacturing Manager DATE: October 21, 2012 SUBJECT: Request for Lounge Approval At our last meeting, we both agreed that our sales level started to drop. You suggested the reason might be in the change of attitude of our workers towards the goals of the company. I also noticed the changes in employees’ behavior and lack of readiness to work extra hard in specific situations. We went through a few strategies to improve the working conditions of the employees. We also had an option of creating an entertainment lounge in place of the break room. With the lounge idea in mind, I searched online to see if I could find any specific successful lounge experiences. What I found was that some companies have installed “video rooms” that enable their employees to play video games during their lunch breaks. These companies cite benefits of the video game lounges, including creating a positive work culture, relieving stress, and promoting fitness. To support my research, please, look at the attached research note which also includes links to the sites I visited. You might have doubts if our senior members of the group would benefit from the lounge. To my surprise, I discovered that people of all ages can equally enjoy playing video games in addition to laughing together and focusing on a purpose together. I myself never used to play modern video games, and I had...

It will help our reputation and show we start making difference in the environment now. When it comes to talking about the environment, we let our products and services speak for themselves. We demonstrate our spirited commitment to environmentally responsible technology. So how good it is if the company is going to have a hybrid car/van, and then what are the benefits of going green with eco-friendly cars. The most obvious benefit of owning a hybrid van/car is the increase in fuel costs. A hybrid car will save the driver in fuel both in the city and on high way. Hybrid vehicles are better for the environment than traditional engines. For example, a hybrid car get 5 miles per gallon better mileage on average that a tradition gasoline power vehicle. And they don’t need to be filled up with gasoline as frequently, cutting overall gasoline consumption and cost. Consumers want to act green, sometimes they expect business to lead the way. Whether we’re thinking about buying a brand new hybrid car, discounts are also available for the company and our employees when purchasing a hybrid car/van. ...Chastin Seeby PRAV 495 Aviation Professionalism 2/8/2015 14 CFR 91.175 The regulation 14 CFR 91.175 refers to takeoffs and landing under IFR conditions. This regulation is meant to pilots and their passengers safe during instrument flight, but this can only happen if the regulation is understood. There was a recent crash on a localizer DME approach where the aircraft descended to MDA and reported that he had the approach lights in sight. The pilot immediately after he reported that he had the approach lights in sight descended to 100 feet above touchdown zone elevation and struck a rising tree covered hill a few miles from the end of the runway. This crash was the cause of not fully understanding the regulation and all that it says. In section (c), Operation below DH/DA or MDA, subsection (1) states that: The aircraft is continuously in a position from which a decent to a landing on the intended runway can be made at a normal rate of decent using normal maneuvers… The aircraft did not follow that particular part of the regulation. ...To: Alex Daniels, Vice President of Human Resources From: Matthew Bole, Director of Human Resources Subject: Recommend a bank paid time off program This year workplace flexibility ranked as the primary motivator cited by employers for implementing a paid time off bank leave system for employees (WorldatWork). At Global Gadgets we are committed to providing flexibility within our employees life’s. Our goal is to meet and exceed their expectations on a daily basis. Despite this goal, we currently provide our employees with independent sick, personal, and vacation day programs. Based on a WorldatWork report, having a concrete definition between compensation programs greatly hinders the ability for employees to use their paid time off in a way that is beneficial for them WorldatWork). If we truly want to live by our company’s values and provide a workplace based on employee flexibility, we should consider implementing a paid time off program that combines sick, personal, and vacation programs. The use of this type of program will empower employees to choose how they use their paid time off versus our current time off programs that allocate a specific amount of time per category on an annual basis. This ultimately will lead to increased worker satisfaction, which in turn can lead to increased productivity. The employees would not be alone in reaping the benefits from this program. Currently our company’s three separate programs require three times the manpower...

By opening a tuition reimbursement program for employees at Intercontinental, the company would be doing a massive service to its overall well-being as to have a well-educated task force would help the company to run more efficiently, now and in the long-run. Would Intercontinental have interest in helping us to implement a tuition-reimbursement program? It has been proven that implementing a tuition reimbursement program will help to increase employee morale and loyalty, thus increasing the efficiency of the company. Ethics

...Martina Korpue Introduction to Ethics Professor Fumerton November 30, 2012 “Ethical judgments are social instruments” In his essay “The Emotive Meaning of Ethical Terms”, Charles Leslie Stevenson (C.L. Stevenson), a professor of philosophy who taught at the University of Michigan, theorizes that the function of ethical statements is not to describe, but is rather to prescribe. He claims that language carries a type of meaning which he calls ‘emotive meaning’, rather than descriptive meaning and uses many examples of the term ‘good’ to establish his belief. He aims at showing that the notion of ‘good’ is equivalent to taking favor of something (“X is good”= “I like X”). Stevenson’s in-depth analysis of the concept of ‘good’ ultimately shows his readers the reality that the disagreement over whether something is good or not is just simply a disagreement in attitude. The first method used in determining the emotive meaning of ethical statements is to first address ethical questions in answering the question ‘Is X good?’ by what Stevenson calls ‘substitution’. He explains that in order to help understand this concept, the question must be substituted by a question that is free from ambiguity and confusion (Stevenson 370). It would not make sense to substitute this question with one that is irrelevant or with one that is the same as the question being assessed. He uses an example of substitution with the statement ‘Is X pink with yellow trimmings?’ This statement clearly has...

...CHAPTER SIX: STRUCTURE The learning goal of this chapter is to teach students how to shape their messages and arguments into appropriate structures. Since the chapter is long and contains, in effect, three mini-cases -- on Great Lakes, RAs, and Narrative -- you may choose to teach the chapter in one class and the case in the next. One way to structure a class on this chapter is to emphasize the commonalities among logical, psychological, and narrative structures. Beginning, Middle, and End Both an argument (given, since, therefore) and a communication structure (introduction, body, conclusion) share the same features, that is, they have a beginning, a middle, and an end. We discuss these features in further detail in the Guides to Effective Writing and Speaking in Part Three. Here, we simply encourage the instructor to pull together some organizational principles. Some suggestions for focusing student discussion: When defining your content, marshalling your arguments, and developing your structure, try to meet the following criteria: Beginnings should: 1. Gain the audience's attention and focus it on your topic. 2. Explain why the topic is important, timely, or otherwise of interest. 3. Indicate the point of view you will take or suggest your conclusion. 4. Establish a relationship of mutual respect with your audience. Middles should: 1. Develop your main argument by identifying and addressing its component parts. 2. Address subtopics according...

Course Reflection

...Course Reflection December 13, 2015 Dear Professor This course has been very informative. English has never been one of my strong suits. Your course this semester has helped me with strengthening this skill to help prepare me for the business management field. The assignments I felt were most beneficial included the bad news and memo assignments. Being in a management position, there will times that I need to deliver bad news to staff members. This assignment gave me insight on how to handle these types of situations in a professional manner. Memos are an integral part of any office. The memo assignment showed me the proper way to prepare a memo so that it did not look like a personal email. My least favorite assignment was the Persuasive Message. I do not feel that I am very persuasive and this is a skill that I am lacking. It was very helpful by making me practice this skill, but it was not my favorite assignment. I do feel that my writing skills have improved. With writing, there is always room for improvement and the more that you practice your writing skills, the better they will become. Since I want to work in the healthcare management field, my writing skills are going to be used on a daily basis. This course has greatly increased my chances for successful business writing that is professional looking. I would like to thank you for teaching English in a way that could be easily understood. Your feedback was insightful as well as useful. I truly...
