When I was in 8th grade, our family dog, Little, died. Little was a terrific retriever mix, and wouldn’t fail to procreate a smile whenever she wagged her tail, and her whole body shook with it. Unfortunately, Little died at around 14; 82 in dog years because of tumors. Our family didn’t bury her alongside our two other dogs, Malley and Winter, but we cremated her instead; because she was the last dog we had from when my parents moved to Louisiana. I specifically remembered that we kept her ashes for months, until we emptied the rose-covered container onto the second oldest property we owned, because that was her favorite place to run, and she was intrigued by the different smells that the forest had. That seems sad when thought about, but have you considered the entire population of trees in the world? In the entire world, there are about 3 trillion trees on Earth. In number form, that is 3,000,000,000,000,000,000 trees existing on our planet; that's quite a number, right? And now, take into consideration the number of trees planted per year, which is around 1.6 billion only in America, and are hoping to expand to larger numbers as the years increase; we could eventually replace all of the trees we cut down, including through natural means. Some areas that are cut, are indeed clear-cut, and are according to definition, ¨A section of forest where all of the trees have been cut down for harvesting,” or is, ¨of or relating to a section of forest where all trees have been cut down for harvesting.¨ Therefore, clear-cutting is basically an act of either cutting all trees for timber or making way for a new set of trees to inhabit the area. The reason why a large sum of people dislike clear-cutting is because of how it looks; barren, depressing, or even alien. This causes people’s emotion to conflict with the real logic behind it, which is a difficult subject to deal with, and this confusion and sadness could just be a lack of understanding about what clear-cutting is and what it does. With clear-cutting, you eliminate all trees in the area and rely on time to give you rewards, but with high-grading, you are only receiving instant gratification by cutting the best timber. The best timber doesn’t necessarily mean that it is big, it means that it grows well and is salvageable for furniture or other goods. As “Central Pennsylvania Forestry” puts it, “No concern is shown for the species composition, quality, and density of the remaining forest… It’s like a rancher selling a prize-winning bull and keeping the losers for breeding," said Hank Stelzer, University of Missouri Extension state forestry specialist. "You’re cashing in your best assets and investing in your worst."” And since it is efficient, thousands of acres can be affected by high-grading, leaving acres upon acres to become undesirable and worthless.
