...Afghan settlement in exile: Peshawar, Pakistan and Freemont, California in the United States. As his article largely focuses on Afghan music culture after the communist coup of 1978, Baily first offers a description of Afghan music as it was before the 23 years’ war, and describes trends between music and migration. He describes three categories of music in Afghanistan and focuses on the latter two: regional folk songs, which are characteristic of various regions and ethnic groups; popular music that was created and promoted by Afghanistan’s only radio station, called Radio Afghanistan; and art music that was created in the musician’s quarter of the old city in Kabul (Kabul’s Kucheh Kharabat). Baily also notes an important social distinction between professional (kesbi) musicians for whom a musical profession is hereditary, and amateur (shauqi) musicians who were typically from educated middle-class or even upper-class families and whose attitudes toward music were more liberal. Hereditary professional musicians tended to regard playing music as an occupation that was in their own tradition and right. Knowledge of Indian music theory and specific performance techniques that are associated with certain instruments were considered exclusively their domain, and something that amateur, self-taught musicians lacked. Music practiced by Afghan refugees who fled to Peshawar was similar in style and sound to the traditional music of Afghanistan. Peshawar is closely located to Kabul...

...Section 4 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961: A Critic Professor Dr. A.W.M Abdul Huq Introduction Law, whether divine or manmade, is always for the well-being of the human beings. In other words, laws are ultimately related to life experiences which are not a monopoly of the theologians only.1 As the society is not any constant phenomenon, it inevitably changes every moment. As a result laws are needed to be changed in compliance with the changing demands of the society. In Islamic Legal System as well the iron fist of taqlid (the doctrine of imitation) had to give way to ijtihad (meaning independent and free exercise of intellect to interpret interpretation of Islamic laws). It is always open for and permitted to, the thinkers, lawmakers and the rulers who are entrusted to apply shariah in society. In this short commentary I intend to address a particular issue relating to the orphaned children’s inheritance right. This is an extremely practical anomaly of the Doctrine of Representation usually escaping our notice. Grandchild’s inheritance right: the Islamic Law The Islamic law of inheritance does not all together deny the grandchild of the propositus their right to inheritance. Sunni Law places them in the list of quranic sharers. Unless excluded otherwise, they inherit from their grandparent. The doctrine of representation comes into question in case of allotment of their shares. The doctrine is accepted at least for two purposes:2 A) For the purpose...

...SYNOPSIS ON NEED OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING AT INTERMEDIATE LEVEL IN DISTRICT PESHAWAR By Malik Nouman Waris This report is being submitted to the Department of Secondary Education, Faculty of Education, Allama Iqbal Open University Islamabad for partial fulfillment of the condition of the Master of Education [pic] M. Ed Research Academic Session 2011-2012 Department of Secondary Teacher Education, Faculty of Education Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad, Pakistan Background: According to his definitions: “Guidance is nothing but to assist the individual to choose a vocation, to prepare for it, and to attain efficiency progress.” (Chuhan S. S, 2001) When an individual steps into the practical life, he has to face series of problems and inconveniences in various aspects of his life. There are his physical, emotional, mental and social problems. Guidance is just assisting the individual in various activities of his life—vocational, educational, mental and social. The individual is assisted in the lights of his inborn tendencies, natural potentialities and personal capacities. Actually Guidance is as old as the humanity itself. It existed from the time immemorial. Individual was born with innumerable problems. Even in the primitive and medieval society, the parents used to solve the problems of their children. With the simplicity of society the problems were simple, but now in a modern complex and technological society...

...of 9-11 since the Taliban supported Al-Qaeda in doing the attacks. This accidental bombing killed Faiz, which means the Taliban has made an effect on Nusrat. The Taliban also affects Nusrat because of the rumors that Nusrat heard when she went to shop at the bazaar. She heard that there is "fighting between the loose alliance of Afghan tribal warriors organized by the Americans and Taliban."(112) Nusrat is hoping it will not hurt Faiz because she does not know he's dead yet. These rumors worry Nusrat because the Taliban are controlling the borders and people are unable to go to and from Peshawar, so she thinks it will be hard for Faiz to come home. Nusrat is later informed that "the Taliban are gone" (Staples 145). This means that the border is open again and people, specifically Faiz can go from northern Afghanistan back to Peshawar and people are coming from northern Afghanistan to Peshawar to collect their families who are refugees. It has become clear that the Taliban has not only made a difference on Najmah, they also impacted Nusrat. Though the Taliban are murderous in the novel "Under the Persimmon Tree", they are shown to be more brutal to people of Afghanistan and Pakistan in real life (Lynch). "It was started by a leader named Mullah Mohammed Omar"(Lynch). The Taliban is a Sunni Islamic fundamentalist group originating from Afghanistan and started in 1994 (Tanna). They ruled Afghanistan for about 5 years after that (Tanna). The word Taliban means "religious students"...

...“Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you; they're supposed to help you discover who you are.” (Bernice Johnson Reagon). My father happened to be just nine when his father departed and after my grandfather sudden passing, my father worked restlessly to obtain an education. He believes that we are born to set examples for others through our lifestyles and more importantly through our education. From this, I was raised believing that life can bring challenges in several ways. However, they are not there to overwhelm me, nevertheless to bring the best out of myself. Although, few incidents in life force us to imagine that life is merely a journey of adversity and misfortune. Tuesday, December 16, 2014, was the day my world fell apart...

...However, Najmah knows that if she were to return alone she would be married off because of Taliban laws. This creates a man vs society conflict since the Taliban rules are preventing Najmah from reaching her goal and honoring her father. (STEWE-2) While in Peshawar, Najmah and Nur are finally reunited. Both agree that they must go back home because “We have no choice but to return to golestan,' says Nur quietly. 'Uncle or someone else surely will take our land is we don't go back” (Staples 256). Najmah and Nur both want to honor their father by returning home and preventing Uncle from claiming the family land. This goal is made easier once Nur is present, since being a male, he will be most likely able to claim the land for him and Najmah. whereas Najmah was going to have trouble claiming the land by herself. However, seeing that Najmah wouldn’t give up hope that she would one day be able to reach her goal shows determination. This character trait leads Najmah home but also away from Nusrat, as they...

Clearly attributed to the bombing, this event robbed her of speech for the duration of her journey to Peshawar. This symptom wasn’t the work of Najmah, and she didn’t consciously bring it upon herself, as shown when she “[tries] to communicate, but although the words...
