The Pesky Goat Doña Josefina lived on the outskirts of Ciáles, a small town in the highlands of Puerto Rico. Her tiny house was as spotless as a porcelain teacup. Although she lived alone, except for her dog, Ladrón, and her cat, Misifú, Doña Josefina was too busy to ever be lonely. She spent all her waking moments tending her beloved garden. Doña Josefina was known throughout the island for her mano santa--the blessed hand that turned all plants she touched into breathtaking specimens of splendrous color and robust good health. In the garden, she grew prize-winning roses and orchids, hibiscus and hydrangea, and dozens of jewel-colored flowers that grow only in the tropical climate of the lush Caribbean Islands. The garden air was forever perfumed with the scent of roses and honeysuckle. Since Doña Josefina had no children of her own, she watched over her garden as a mother watches over her children. Each of her flowers was precious to her. She thanked God daily for the gift of being the caretaker of such a delightful paradise. During the day, her paradise attracted butterflies and hummingbirds, bees and ants, and nightingales whose song was as sweet and pure as the water from a secret spring. At night, the garden attracted worms and toads and coquíes, tiny Puerto Rican tree frogs. One unfortunate night, the garden paradise also attracted a pest. The next morning, Doña Josefina noticed, much to her distress, that the blossoms and tender branches of several young hydrangea plants had been badly chewed. The following morning, the leaves and flowers at the bottom of the large vine in front of the house had disappeared. On the third morning, Doña Josefina discovered that her begonias were gnawed almost to the root. Only stubby, mangled fingers remained, protruding from the rich, black soil. On each occasion, Doña Josefina searched the ground for footprints or other signs as to what was destroying her precious garden. But she could find no clue. That night, Doña Josefina didn't sleep. She stayed up all night watching from her window for the culprit to appear. Just before dawn, something crept into the garden. Doña Josefina held her breath and waited. As she watched, the thing seemed to rise into the air and take the shape of a small white goat. The goat floated toward a hydrangea plant. When it reached the plant, the goat began to feast on the large balls of blossoms. "Ay, ay, ay!" cried Doña Josefina. "A cabra is destroying my precious darlings!" Doña Josefina ran through the living room and out the front door. When she raced down the slick, tile-covered steps, her heel slipped, and she twisted her ankle. "Oh, no!" she cried. "What shall I do?" Unable to continue into the garden, Doña Josefina hobbled back into the house and called her dog. "Ladrón, I will give you an extra helping of meat today if you'll go into the garden and chase away that cabra." "¡Seguro!" Ladrón replied with an enthusiastic bark. "Of course I'll do it!" Ladrón raced to the garden, his jowls drooling at the thought of an extra helping of meat. He sniffed loudly as he trotted around the flower beds, searching for the goat. The goat heard him and prepared herself for an attack. She climbed onto a boulder that was hidden behind a bush. Then she took a deep breath to make herself appear larger and said in a deep, loud voice: "Heed my words and stay away. I'll devour the first to disobey!" To Ladrón, the tiny goat seemed to have grown ten times its size. He swore that the goat's evil eyes glowed like burning coals. Its teeth would put a crocodile to shame. He didn't want to put those terrible teeth to a test, not for all the delicious meat in Puerto Rico! Ladrón became a blur of spots and dust. He didn't stop running until he was safely under Doña Josefina's bed. There, he turned into a mass of trembling fur and clattering teeth. He refused to come out until morning, untempted by Doña Josefina's promises of roasted meats and spicy sausages. "Ay, ay, ay!" cried Doña Josefina. "Now, what shall I do?" At that moment, Misifú rubbed up against the old woman's leg. "Ah, Misifú!" said Doña Josefina, stooping to pick up the white cat. "I'll give you two extra helpings of fish tonight if you'll just go into the garden and chase away that peskycabra." "Why not?" Misifú replied with flick of her tail. "¿Porqué no? It might be interesting to chase a goat." In no particular hurry, Misifú sauntered out to the garden. Because she made no effort to hide herself, the goat spotted her strolling down the main garden path. The pesky little goat prepared herself for battle. She climbed halfway up a sturdy trellis, poking her head between the vines. In a deep, loud voice, the pesky goat said:

"Heed my words and stay away. I'll devour the first to disobey!"

Misifú froze in her tracks. Her luminous eyes widened and searched the darkness like lanterns for the owner of the voice. High above her head, Misifú saw a horrible head, the shape and size of a dragon's. Huge horns stuck out above its eyes. At its sides flapped large, wide wings. Its serpentine body entwined itself around the trellis. Misifú swore that from the creature's nostrils flames escaped and licked the sky. This was no pesky goat--this was a dragon! And there weren't enough helpings of fish in all of Puerto Rico to tempt Misifú to tangle with a dragon. Misifú became a streak of white in the darkness and didn't stop running until she was safely under Doña Josefina's bed next to Ladrón. No promises of sweet cream and tender giblets could entice her out. Doña Josefina placed her hands on top of her head. "Ay, ay, ay! ¿Qué haré? What shall I do?" In the meantime, a bee had flown into the house through an open window. "¿Qué pasa, Doña Josefina? What's the problem?" "Ah, brave abejita," began Doña Josefina, feeling some hope returning, "I'll give you ten drops of honey if you'll chase that pesky, pesky cabra from my garden." The bee considered Doña Josefina's proposition, and replied: "¡Seguro! It'll be easy. The pesky goat will be gone in no time." The bee buzzed out the window and into the garden. He buzzed in and out of the flowers and vines looking for the pesky goat. But the goat heard him and was ready. Rearing up on her hind legs, she said in a deep, loud voice: "Heed my words and stay away. I'll devour the first to disobey!" The bee stared at the white phantom that loomed up before him. Never had he seen anything so large and hideous! It had to be the ghost of a dreadful ogre. No amount of honey was worth standing up to a phantom ogre! In the next instant, the bee zoomed from the garden and didn't stop flying until he had passed two barrios. He had no intention of ever returning to Doña Josefina's garden paradise. Doña Josefina waited and waited for the bee to announce that the pesky goat was gone for good. When the bee did not return, Doña Josefina began to cry. "Ay, ay, ay! My beloved garden. That pesky, pesky, pesky cabra is going to destroy it all!" The elderly woman felt a sting on her ear. "No llores, Doña Josefina. Please, don't cry," said a tiny voice. "Tell me your problem and perhaps I can help." Doña Josefina flicked her ear and a little black ant dropped onto the palm of her hand. She stared at the little ant in disbelief. If her faithful Ladrón, her irascible Misifú, and a brave little bee could not chase away that pesky goat, how could a tiny little ant?

"Hormiguita," began Doña Josefina, feeling desperate, "are you brave enough to chase that pesky, pesky, pesky cabra from my garden?" "I'm willing to try," said the little ant. She crawled off Doña Josefina's hand and into the garden. Because the little ant was so tiny and quiet, she was able to sneak up on the pesky goat. Before the goat realized what was happening, the little ant climbed onto the goat's hind leg. She stung the goat in the leg, then on the stomach, then on the chest, and headed for her ear. All the while, the pesky goat jumped and kicked and scratched. She rolled and rolled on the ground. But she couldn't make the stinging stop. Suddenly, a voice sang out: "Heed my words and go away. I'll sting the one who dares to stay!" Believing the garden had been invaded by an army of nasty stinging ants, the pesky goat ran off, never to be heard from again. Doña Josefina rewarded the spunky little ant with all the sugar and bread crumbs she and her friends could carry to their ant hill. When her ankle healed, Doña Josefina went back to tending her beloved garden. With her help, the flowers and vines that the goat had chewed quickly mended and all traces of the pesky goat disappeared.

Goats Are Better Than Dogs and Cats

...Why goats are better than dogs and cats Dogs are regarded as man’s best friend. In the USA alone, there are around 78 million dog owners. There are also over 220 million cats in the world. Whenever you think of a common household pet, you will most likely think of cats or dogs straight away. If you go out for a walk, it is almost guaranteed that you will see a cat or a dog. How many of you own a dog or a cat? Well I am going to convince you why goats are better pets than dogs or cats. Goats are amazing creatures. In many parts of the world they are thought of as livestock or work animals. They are used in third world countries for their meat, fur, milk and to work on the land. The truth is, they are wonderful pets and very loving creatures. There are around 450 million goats in the world and they were the first animal ever to be domesticated by humans. There are many different breeds of goats. All breeds are either dairy or meat goats. Dairy goats are bred for their milk, and meat goats are bred for their meat. Each different breed is extremely different, both in appearance and personality so you have lots to choose from. Dogs and cats are lots of fun but they don’t offer uses in many other ways. Goats can be very useful because they are able to eat the grass on your lawn. This is great for people who are busy because they won’t have to mow their lawn so often. Goats also provide you with fresh milk. Many scientists claim that fresh goat’s milk is great for your health. This...

To Pet or Not to Pet

...Animals have played a significant role in human customs, legends, and religions throughout history. "Primitive people found that human- animal relationships were important to their very survival, and petkeeping was common in hunter-gatherer societies" (Anderson et al., 1987). It is impossible to determine when the use of animals was used specifically to promote physical and psychological health. However, the use of horseback riding for people with serious disabilities has been reported for centuries. Records show that at the York Retreat, in England 1792, in an attempt to reduce the use of harsh drugs and restraints animals were incorporated into the treatment for mental patients. In 1919 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C., a letter to Superintendent Dr. W.A. White from Secretary of the Interior F.K. Lane suggested the use of dogs as companions for the psychiatric hospital's residents. From 1944 to 1945 at an Army Air Corps Convalescent Hospital at Pawling, New York was the earliest known extensive use of companion animals. Farm animals were used with patients that were recovering from war experiences. After the war, they began to use animals in outpatient psychotherapy. During the 1970's, case studies were reported of animals facilitating therapy with children and senior citizens. In our own time the urban population's often unsatisfied need for intimacy, and contact with nature may reflect the great increase in pet ownership. According to the article...

Assessment of Backyard Goat Production and Marketing System in the Municipality of Argao, Cebu

...INTRODUCTION In many countries in Asia, goats are very important in the protein diets of the people, as well as a good, stable source of livelihood especially for the poor in the rural areas. Goat production is mostly carried out by smallholders where the animals are kept in small flocks at an average of 5-10 head/family. While rearing of goat remains at a subsistence level, its contribution to the total farm income is substantial. Goat production fits well in the rural landscape as well as in the resource capacity of smallholder farmers. It requires low initial capital and guarantees a high return on investment in as fast as two years; hence it is an attractive undertaking among rural households (FFTC Annual Report 2009). In recognition of its importance, several advanced technologies have been developed to increase goat production in some countries in the region. Technology improvement widely ranges from reproductive techniques and seasonal breeding, to silage making, agricultural by-product utilization, slotted slat barn facilities and total mix ration. However, most Asian small-scale goat farmers do not have access to these relevant information and advanced technologies for increased outputs, giving them very limited opportunities to improve their production as well as their livelihood. Goats are a most likely alternative source of animal protein, and can efficiently provide meat and milk to complement cattle and buffalo production. Goat raising has become not just for the...

An Accounting Case

...last year, a one-room cabin equal 3 acres of land and equal 12 sheep finally, a plow equals 2 goat and equal 2/3 sheep according to last year’s exchange rate and 2 carts which were traded with a poor acre of land equals 8 sheep plus 400 sheep. So Deyonne’s total assets are 500(2/3) sheep. Deyonne’s liabilities and assets deduction are 35 sheep plus 3 sheep, which will come to 38 sheep, therefore, his total net assets are 462(2/3) sheep. Batonne’s assets: 1. 360 sheep 2. 30 acres of land (which were trade with 35 sheep 10 years ago) 3. 10 acres of land (which were trade current year) 4. 10 goats ( 3 goat equals 1 sheep according to last year’s price) 5. An ox ( equals 3 sheep) 6. A two-room cabin (worth 3 acres of land) Explanations: 1. Although Batonne obtained 20 acres of land 10 years ago with 35 sheep, the worth of land increased to 4 sheep per acre of land. So all the land should be converted to sheep according to this later price. 2. There is no exchange price for the poor land, so it is assumed that the price for poor land is also 4 sheep per acre of land. 3. Because the order Batonne’s wife received cannot satisfy the requirement of revenue confirmation, the revenue of this order cannot be confirmed as income, therefore, cannot be confirmed as assets either. Based on the information, 40 acres of land equal 160 sheep, 10 goats equal 3(1/3) sheep, an ox equals 3 sheep, and a two-room cabin worth 12 sheep plus 360 sheep...

Macaroni

...Powdered cheese, macaroni, butter, and milk combine to make up my favorite food. Macaroni and cheese can go with just about any meal, which allows me to enjoy it often. Hamburgers, chicken, even pork chops; macaroni and cheese goes well with all of them. Because of this adaptability and because of its easy preparation and convenience, macaroni and cheese has become my food of choice. Every time I feast on a hearty bowl of macaroni and cheese, I am reminded of the summers of my youth. It was then that my mother allowed me to help her with the preparation of my macaroni and cheese. I soon discovered that macaroni and cheese is one of the easiest of foods to prepare. After bringing water to a boil, place macaroni in and wait until it is at your desired consistency. Once that is done you strain the noodles; place them back in the pot, then mix in cheese, butter and milk. Now the only thing left to do is enjoy the meal that you just prepared. Besides the convenience to make macaroni and cheese, this food is economically convenient because it will not lighten your wallet. There are exceptions to this, of course, but for the most part it will cost you about a dollar for a box, and you then have an entire meal. This inexpensiveness is extremely convenient, especially for the college student like myself. I personally have a steady supply of this cheesy delight in my room at all...

Fake Cashmere

...- 1 - Executive Summary This article deals with the cashmere industry and the damages for the producer, dealer and customer caused by faked products. In the last years an increase in faked cashmere products was observed caused by increasing demand and stagnating production due to special characteristics in the process of gathering the cashmere wool. The demand side is mainly covered by the textile industry with over 50% share and this industry is affected mostly by the fraud with faked cashmere products. In addition customers are harmed because the pay for a premium products which they do not gain. In the last years two methods have been developed to examine different kind of animal hairs and fibers and to determine their origins. The scanning electron microscopy method allows a highly detailed test of the fibers with a quality analysis as well. However, this test needs highly skilled people and quite a long time and is therefore relatively expensive and not every company can pay for such a test. The DNA analysis on the other hand is easier to handle. It does not take as long as the scanning electron microscopy method and is much cheaper. Otherwise is cannot test the quality of the fibers and thus cannot detect every fake product, e.g. recycled materials. The industry needs a new kind of analysis, which combines the advantages of the DNA analysis on the one hand, and the scanning electron microscopy method on the other hand. Such a test could generate high revenue because the...

...Open Letter to a Young Negro (by Jesse Owens) All black men are insane…. Almost any living thing would quickly go mad under the unrelenting exposure to the climate created and reserved for black men in a white racist society…. I am secretly pleased about the riots. Nothing would please the tortured man inside me more than seeing bigger and better riots everyday. Those words were spoken by Bob Teague to his young son in Letters to a Black Boy. He wrote these letters to “alert” his son to “reality” so that the boy wouldn’t be caught off guard—unprepared and undone. Are his words true? Does a black man have to be just about insane to exist in America? Do all Negroes feel a deep twinge of pleasure every time we see a white man hurt and a part of white society destroyed? Is reality so stinking terrible that it’ll grab your heart out of your chest with one hand and your manhood with the other if you don’t meet it armed like a Nazi storm trooper? Bob Teague is no “militant.” He’s a constructive, accomplished journalist with a wife and child. If he feels hate and fear, can you ever avoid feeling it? Whether it’s Uncle Tom or ranting rioter doing the talking today, you’re told that you’ll have to be afraid and angry.
