Mortars and Pestles

...and Pestles Are Everywhere Mortars and pestles can be used for so many things. In what I have read they are essential tools in the world of pharmacy. Mixing and breaking down medications to get the right compound then and now, I know from experience the necessity of this tool. My grandmother for as long as I could remember, in my culture is what we call a Suruhana. Suruhana in our culture is a native witch doctor who practices through herbs, prayer, and the belief in our ancestor's spirits. Growing up and spending alot of time with her gave me a view on medicine in a whole new way. I feared going to the hospital and preferred the bitter herbal medicine she would grind and stir up. Chamorro is my ethnicity and like every culture most of today is based on our past and our ancestors. We believe that Taotaomonas (our ancestors) live forever with us and in the jungles of Guam. Being a Suruhana is believed to be a great gift and is usually passed down to a child who is the most healthy to ensure that the gift is practiced for a long time. Mixing medicine is not the only task of a Suruhana, there are many more things the can do depending on how much the Suruhana passes down. It also takes many years to learn the gift. Watching my grandmother prepare the medicine was always intriguing. She never did tell me what the bowl and stick was that she used to mix her medicine. The only difference from the common mortar and pestle was she wrapped a cloth at the end of the pestle to strain...

...PESTLE analysis stands for "Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environment analysis" and it is a business measurement tool, looking at factors external to the organization. It is often used within a strategic SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats analysis). In contrast to a SWOT, PESTLE encourages you to think about the wider environment and what might be happening now and in the future which will either benefit or be of disadvantage to the organization, individual, and etc. It acts as a kind of radar which picks up trends and developments in the external environment which can be used to inform longer term planning and strategy making. P - Political factors are how and to what degree a government intervenes in the economy, for instance tax policy, employment laws, environmental regulations, trade restrictions and reform, tariffs and political stability. E - Economic factors include economic growth, interest rates, exchange rates and the inflation rate; that is what is happening within the economy. S - Social factors include the cultural aspects and include health consciousness, population growth rate, age distribution, career attitudes and emphasis on safety, i.e. what is occurring socially in the markets in which you operate or expect to operate. T - Technological factors include technological aspects such as R&D activity, automation, technology incentives and the rate of technological change. This describes what is happening...

...PESTLE is an Environmental Framework used to understand the impact of the external factors on the organization and is also used as strategic analytical technique. PESTLE Analysis is used to examine the current and future state of the industry an organization belongs to. This helps in the strategic planning and gaining the competitive edge over the other firms in that industry. This analysis can not only be used for an organization as a whole but various departments can also be inspected under this framework. For example, it makes more sense for a company with diversified product range to analyze its departments separately than the organization as a whole. Importance of the factors varies depending on the nature of the industry and company. For example environmental factors are more important to tourism sector where as economic and political factors are more important for the Banking sector. The main purpose of this analysis is to create a strategy that will leverage as many of these external factors as possible to the company’s favor. These factors have their own advantage and disadvantage to industry. Political factor define the legal and regulatory parameters within which firm must operate. This factor is a major consideration on manager on formulating company strategy. It affects the organizations in terms of government regulations and legal issues and defines both formal and informal rules under which the firm must operate. Economic factors concern the nature and direction...

...ASSESSMENT 3: Evaluation of business case Introduction and Summary of case study This passage tells about Holden which is a foreign-owned car manufacturer wants to exit the car manufacturing in Australia in 2013, but Toyota thinks it will give them pressure on local supplier network and their ability to make cars. Toyota was founded in 1958, and among 20 years, it expanded to export. In the next 5 years, it merged as the market leader. Although Toyota has a long history of production and broadly business scope with a good business system, to some extent, it is influenced by the external environment which include the customers demand, market structure, adverse currency development and other development. It uses three strategies so as to follow the balanced model. The model is good, but for the constraint from domestic demand, the company uses the export strategy from New Zealand to Thailand. Moreover, customers’ preference to the type of cars changes which is unfortunately counters to Toyota’s; the small scale of production results in high level of cost; the high tariff rates make it difficult export cars, also high exchange rate of exporting are the key adverse environment. These factors make Toyota feel competitive. In order to operate successfully, Toyota began to counter those developments. It practise improvement in productivity and reduction in cost by adopting both internal and external cost-reduction strategies, such as reduce the production and labour cost, but...

...PESTLE ANALYSIS NOKIA ID NO.: B0039FSFS1112 Political factors All businesses that are tax paying have to abide by the laws of the government. Nokia is a major multi-national corporation that is commonly known for its mobile telephones. This multi-million dollar company has its operations spread out across many countries in the world. Due to its mass span of operation Nokia is forced to accept the rules/legislations of different markets in different countries. If Nokia is able to have a good affiliation with the government and operate successfully with the law put up by the government they will be able to gain full advantage. So if Nokia would want to operate to its maximum capacity and gain higher market share it will have to thoroughly inspect legislations put up by government and also predict legislations before they are placed so that they are flexible enough to take early precautions. Economic factors Economic factors are factors that will hugely impact a company’s performance. If Nokia is to thrive & survive it will have to study current economic states, Nokia will have to know if the economy is in a ‘recession’ or ‘boom’. Currently the EU’s economy is in chaos unemployment is high, companies are downsizing and salaries are being cut, as a result this will hugely impact businesses. In a recession people won’t have money to spend on luxury items due to tight budgets laid out by governments when this happens businesses (Nokia) will have to overlook their strategies...

The Kumeyaay People of California

...THE KUMEYAAY PEOPLE OF CALIFORNIA by Your Name (boldface) ANTH 100: Non-Western Cultures and the Western Tradition Instructor: Dr. Steven R. James Nov. 10, 2014 INTRODUCTION In my quest to study the life of the ancient California inhabitants, I visited the San Diego Museum of Man which is an anthropological museum situated in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. The museum was established in the year 1915 as a result of the Panama-California Exposition where several exhibits were displayed with ‘The Story of Man through Ages’ being the first. At the culmination of the exposition, San Diego Museum Association sought to retain the available collection and start a permanent museum. As a result, the collection was named Museum of Man in 1942 and later in 1978 as the California Museum of Man. Besides housing the history of the Kumeyaay people, who are the subject of this research paper, the history of other Native Americans from the South of California can also be studied in this place. The museum has a population of over 100000 ethnographic items, 25000 images, and a large library of books and journals. MUSEUM EXHIBIT 1) Artifact Display On the second floor of the museum, a wide variety of the historic sources can be found. Among the displayed artifacts there are models of the early man, reconstructions of the bones of hominids, cave paintings, coffins of mummies from ancient Egypt, stone carvings, and remains of the Egyptian mummy known as Lemon Grove. Method Weigh silica crucible and record weight prior to experiment. Grind over 5g of food sample in pestle and mortar and measure 5g of ground sample into the crucible. (W0) Place the dish in a baking oven for 24hrs to dry out the sample. Reweigh the sample in silica crucible, This is now the true weight of the sample (W1) Set up the bunsen burner on top of the heatproof mat with tripod and clay pipe triangle above to support the crucible. Ignite the bunsen burner and begin to heat the sample slowly ensuring the sample does not set on fire as this will result in a loss of material to the atmosphere in the form of particles. The sample should turn black. Once the sample reaches roughly 100°C continue to heat to 500°C until the sample turns white. Allow sample to cool to room temperature in a dessicator. Weigh the finished sample (W2) Calculate the ash content (X): (W2-W0)/(W1/W0)x100=X Materials: Silica dish Baking Oven Bunsen Burner Matches Tripod Clay pipe triangle Heat proof mat Measuring scales (accurate to 3 decimal points) Pestle and mortar 6g Food sample Results W0=13.134 W1=18.135 W2=13.595 (13.595-13.134)/(18.135-13.134)x100=9.218% Total ash content = 9.218% Ash content stated on packet = 7% Discussion The results show that the ash content is higher than that of the content...
