As a young girl soon to begin her freshman year of high school, my father, Ernest W. Bettis would always lay stress on; emphasize - the universal condition of human existence - life. His most profound words were: “Patty Cakes, it is not the quantity of life; it’s the quality.” Perplexed, clueless and a bit giddy, his words went one ear and quickly out the other. I am thankful that as I matured, so did my understanding of his guidance. By the same token, when I was assigned to research Dr. Elizabeth A. Peterson, I was somewhat startled to learn that she had passed away at the young age of 52; in any event, her accomplishments exemplified my late father’s noteworthy testimony, and I am grateful to have been introduced to this …show more content…
This developmental approach fostered mathematical understanding by building deliberate connections among physical models, picture, and symbols and associated concepts and procedures. After researching this information, I took the liberty of speaking with one of my former Math colleagues from the Beachwood City School District. The study of Mathematics continues in its’ advancement. Fourth graders are presently strategically learning and perfecting the several of the following: Number sense, Variable expressions, Functions, Logical reasoning, Decimals and Geometry. The 31 veteran teacher I interviewed was also very familiar with Indianapolis Pentathlon. From 1986 until 1988, Peterson was the Coordinator and Field Consultant at Northern Illinois University. She is at this point immerging with a vengeance into her field of adult education solidifying her Master’s and Ph.D. credentials’. For one year she took on the title of Coordinator of Adult Basic Skills and Literacy at the Midwest Women’s Center in Chicago; moreover, one of the most prodigious honors – recognition – of Dr. Peterson was: Illinois Consortium for Educational Opportunity Program (ICEOP Fellow), …show more content…
Peterson’s main focus was Adult Education-specifically-of African American women. Her book entitled: African American Women: A Study of Will and Success, is phenomenal publication that every adult educator graduate student should have in his or her personal library. She speaks candidly on the struggles of African American women: The African American woman has struggled against innumerable odds since slavery and yet we must not take her will or inner strength for granted (Peterson, 1992). Her themes of “autonomy and will” are most profound, and in many ways mirrors Emerson’s discussions on self-reliance. This respectably aligns with Peterson’s concepts, beliefs and theories.
