...Baylor (Hankamer) Essay 1 QUESTION: Explain how your academic background, prior professional experience, ideas and goals would contribute to the educational experiences of your fellow graduate classmates. Completing my degree in computer science and mathematics has given me a strong technical foundation in computer development. My undergraduate work covered areas such as hardware architecture, data structure concepts and software development. One of the most interesting programming assignments I was given was to develop an algebra tutor software package to be used by college algebra students. I worked with a team of developers to design a program that could solve any set of linear equations and display a 2D or 3D graph of the equations. The aspect I liked most about our project was the fact that it was used to teach a difficult subject in a clear and simple manner. I have always enjoyed teaching others. For three semesters at [deleted], I had the unique opportunity to teach College Connection courses with a professor. College Connection is a course designed to help incoming freshman make a smooth transition from high school to college. As a peer leader, I covered material such as personal responsibility, personal finance, relationships and the study habits of a master student. My job was using my experience as a student and young adult to give practical advice to the class. One of the main aspects of being a peer leader was being a friend to whom the students could...

...Catina Hunter 7/14/2014 The Worth of a Pharmacy Technician The Essentials of College Writing The work of a pharmacy technician can be both complex and stressful. We are not paid enough. For me it’s complex because I have to where many hats. It’s also stressful because not only do we have to deal with sometimes irate pharmacist but also facility employees. I have to even sometimes correct the pharmacist we are trained to assist. Our pay does not reflect the work or effort we put into our jobs. Even though we do more work physically and mentally than the pharmacist our pay does not reflect it. My work is far more important than what we are paid for. I on a daily basis assist customers, enter prescripstions, check inventory of controls, make sure patients get their meds in a timely fashion and deal with sometimes egotistical pharmacist who think we are nothing. I work for a Long Term Care pharmacy. Where our patients are most important. Dealing with families of patients who are end of life is also stressful. Will the comfort meds get there soon enough. Which is also stressful. I have to deal with nurses that think we are magician and can make things happen in a blink of an eye. Some technicians make less than $10 an hour. Which I think is unfair. I have argued this point for the other technicians for years. Some are even certified. Why be certified if a technician is barely making more than minimum wage? I work in the control department. I have been accused of not doing my...

...concern for the well- being of the patient. The pharmacists role is to dispense prescription and over the counter medications to patients, and offer their expertise in the safe use of them. They also provide advice on leading a healthy lifestyle, conduct health and wellness screenings, administer various immunizations and supervise pharmacy technicians. (“Occupational Outlook Handbook”). Pharmacists must also collaborate well with other health care professionals in order to monitor and review the most effective medication therapies for their patients. A career as a pharmacist can be a rewarding profession but in order to be successful, a pharmacist must be well trained, organized and focused, and be willing to be very versatile. In order to become a pharmacist one must attend a higher institute that offers a pharmacy degree. In 1992 all colleges and universities in the United States voted to make the Doctorate of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) the only type of degree one can obtain in order to practice pharmacy. (“Becoming a Pharmacist”). Schools phased out the typical five year Bachelors of Science degree in Pharmacy to a six year post-secondary education program to receive a Pharm.D. Admission requirements are usually strict and one must be at the top of their class in subjects Smith2 such as biology, chemistry...

...our society today. It’s easy, collaboration, sociological changes in time and trends of historical data in the world today are key results in technological advances. Overload can be defines as, “to much information in a processing system, or a unit of measure that exceeds its capacity.” Sociology is the study and classifications of human societies. So now I think, if I put these two together what do I get? In this paper I will discuss my position that sociological changes affect how efficiency works in a work place. Collaboration From the beginning of time, think about how things came about. How did we start our own language? How did we build streets? How did we design computers, car building machines, and create robots that work in pharmacies. It’s simple it’s a little called collaboration. Collaboration can be defined, “to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor.” In today’s time collaboration is the key to any effective work place. To develop systems, many engineers come together and collectively come up with an idea to create a system. Lets looks at a system that the United States Air Force has called ADS. ADS is also known as the automated disbursing system formerly known as CDS,...

...My Future Goals What are my future goals? Well, let me say that I am dreaming big. I do not wish to become the President or even a CEO of a big business. I just want to be able to make a difference in the life of another. I will be attending my college in the fall and studying to become a pharmacist. After three years there, I will transfer to the actual pharmacy school for another two years. There, I will complete my Pharm D degree, also known as a Doctorate of Pharmacy. I would like to start my career in a pharmacy getting to work with and talk to patients one on one. This will help me better understand how some diseases affect people and which diseases are top priorities to eliminate. It would also be very enjoyable to work with the pharmacy technicians as well. Eventually, I want to obtain a PhD in Pharmacy. By receiving my PhD, I am able to participate in lab research. It is a dream of mine to be able to partake in finding cures for diseases like AIDS and even cancers. I would love to travel the world and assist those in need and provide medicines for those whom cannot acquire it on their own. By being a recipient of this scholarship I am able to go to school for the necessary amount of years and achieve my goals in life. Not only would this award benefit my studies, but also those whom I hope to help in the future. Thank you for your time and considering me for this...

...especially true in a pharmacy setting. Not only will this system have to comply to HIPAA privacy policies, it will have to both convenient and accurate. Process of selection The first step in this task would be to form two committees. One would be responsible for overseeing the process, helping to provide guidance on specific policies that may be required and being responsible for allocating expenditures along with finalizing or making major decisions. The other committee would be responsible for determining the need for the system, based on the company’s goals and mission statement. This team is also responsible for the evaluation of the system requirements for a variety of systems. Vendor proposals are also directed to this team along with the training of personal when the system is chosen. Once the system is chosen it is then important to determine how the system will be introduced, If it is a more complex system it may take multiple phases in order to adequately train the personal how to use it efficiently. Finally once the type of system is chosen then it is time to request information and proposals from the vendors. It is also wise here to ask consumer groups for their input on how efficient the system is (Neal, 1993). Goals Impact A company’s goals and standard operational procedure can greatly influence the type of IT system needed so it is important to clarify all SOPs and goals the company wishes to adhere too. For example A hospital pharmacy may need a more...

...The Pharmacy Technician • Article by: Nancy Giguere , Star Tribune Sales and Marketing • Updated: May 25, 2009 - 5:44 PM • In a changing healthcare environment, the role of the pharmacist has evolved from primarily dispensing to monitoring and managing drug therapy in collaboration with physicians and other providers. As a result, pharmacy technicians are beginning to take on some of the technical aspects of pharmacy practice. This means that better educated, more qualified technicians will be needed in the future. • Basic Duties • Technicians help licensed pharmacists dispense medication to patients. They receive the prescription, enter it into the processing system, prepare and label the medication and - after the pharmacist signs off on it - ring up the sale. • Some technicians with special training mix intravenous medication. "We also handle insurance and patient's financial questions. This is a very challenging part of the job," says Randy Cleem, a certified pharmacy technician at the Park Nicollet Clinic - St. Louis Park (www.parknicollet.com). • New Responsibilities • Outside of Minnesota, tech-nicians are taking on additional responsibilities. In some hospital pharmacies, one technician now checks prescriptions filled by another - a function known as "tech-check-tech." • In other settings, technicians educate patients on the use of pillboxes and screen patients for pharmacist-run medication clinics. And at one large university medical center technicians help...
