...Netflix in 2012: Can It Recover from Its Strategy Missteps? Company Overview: Netflix Corporation was established in 1997 by the current CEO, Reed Hastings alongside software executive, Mark Randolph. They are the world’s leading internet television network with over 57 million members in nearly 50 countries enjoying more than two billion hours of TV shows and movies per month, including original series, documentaries and feature films. Members can watch as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, on nearly any internet-connected screen. Additionally members can play, pause and resume watching, all without commercials or commitments. The company was originally only a DVD--by--mail service in which the customer paid for a certain level of membership that determined how many DVD’s could be rented at one time. DVD’s were mailed to the customer and then returned by the customer when they were done watching. After a couple years in business, the company began including streaming services along with this. The goal here was to reduce costs by trying to get the subscribers to switch to streaming, which would reduce the costs incurred for postage and shipping with the mailed DVDs. By 2009, Netflix was offering a collection of 100,000 titles on DVD and had surpassed 10 million subscribers. Strategic Challenges and Analysis: Hastings developed a strategy which made Netflix the largest online subscription service for streaming entertainment in the world. Netflix’s strategy includes...

...Cable and Satellite Television Aren’t Worth Their Cost From the introduction of the television set until the 1980s, free, antenna-based television dominated American households. But beginning in that decade, a fierce trend toward paid, premium television erupted. By the 2000s, more than 80% of all households subscribed to either cable or satellite television (“Television”). But as the demand for such services soared, so did the cost. In 2007, my cable bill averaged $70; less than three years later, it had swelled to $100. And beyond introductory teaser rates, the competition didn’t yield any significant savings. But my search did yield that there’s too many free and low-cost services that provide an alternate to cable and satellite television, thus rendering the cost outrageous. The Internet provides a wealth of complimentary entertainment. Most major networks, including many premium channels, offer their programming available online within a timely fashion after its original broadcast. Several television and movie producers make available a large library of content online; the most famous is probably Sony, which does so through Crackle. Websites such as Hulu and Youtube offer further collections of content available online. Additionally, there’s a wealth of websites providing independent and original programming. The transition to digital television has opened a wealth of new channels available as sub channels. Thus, the amount of antenna-based programming can...

...FINANCIAL MARKETS AND INSTITUTIONS The core purpose of the following report is to analysis 5 of the top British Banks based on their total assets and by looking at their key balance sheet items, income statement items and financial ratios.. Most of the banks in the UK are MNCs. The top 5 banks in the United Kingdom have 90 percent market share. Here is the list of the top 5 banks in the UK: 1. HSBC 2. Lloyds Banking Group PLC 3. Standard Chartered Bank 4. Barclays 5. Royal Bank of Scotland Group Analysis of the key balance sheet and income items is as follows: Loans is one of the most important balance sheet items, as the ability to pool deposits from many sources that can be lent to many different borrowers creates the flow of funds inherent in the banking system. Gross loan is the total amount of issued credits given to banks during the accounting period. We can see from the graph below that HSBC maintained the most steady gross loan figures between 2008 -2012. This was despite the economic depression of 2008 by which RBS was evidently affected by the most with their gross loan figure being the lowest in 2011 of only £24979 million. One of the reasons for this is that UK taxpayers bailed out RBS in with the government owning over 80% of the business while HSBC avoided government assistance. Net Income is the amount of profit money a business has after determining total gross business income and deducting all expenses, taxes, depreciation, and interest. We...

Pien, MD, MPH,† and Jon B. Suzuki, DDS, PHD, MBA‡ isphosphonates (BPs) are a pharmacologic class of synthetic analogs of inorganic pyrophosphate that has an affinity for calcium.1 They are used in the treatment of various malignant and benign metabolic conditions, such as hypercalcemia of malignancy; Paget’s disease of bone; multiple myeloma; and metastases from distant sites such as breast, thyroid, prostate glands, and lung. The oral form of BPs is indicated in the management of osteoporosis, fibrous dysplasia, and most recently, osteogenesis imperfecta in the pediatric population.2,3 Currently, there are 5 bisphosphonates in clinical use: alendronate (Fosamax; Merck, Whitehouse Station, NJ), risedronate (Actonel; Proctor & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, Cincinnati, OH), ibandronate (Boniva; Roche Pharmaceuticals, Nutley, NY), zoledronate (Zometa; Novartis Pharmaceuticals, East Hanover, NJ), and pamidronate (Aredia; Novartis Pharmaceuticals). All 5 medications differ in their binding affinity to bone, potency, and duration.2–5 B Osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) is a condition characterized by necrotic exposed bone in the jaws of patients receiving intravenous or oral bisphosphonate therapy. ...-1- Anatomy of a Credit Crisis 2009-07-24 This timeline has grown and been amended since it first appeared in the December, 2008, issue of The Australian Journal of Management, as the editorial, under the title of “The Dominoes Fall: a timeline of the squeeze and crunch”. I include below the December preamble. The version of mid-May, 2009, will appear as the editorial of the June 2009 issue of the AJM, under the title “Anatomy of a Credit Crisis.” I include below the June preamble, in which I assay a framework for understanding the genesis of the crisis. December, 2008: IN ITS LEADER of October 13, 2008, the Financial Times characterized the western world’s banking system as suffering “the equivalent of a cardiac arrest.” The collapse of confidence in the system means that “it is now virtually impossible for any institution to finance itself in the markets longer than overnight.” This occurred less than a month after Lehman Brothers (LB) collapsed, without bailout. Six months earlier Bear Stearns (BS) had been bailed out after JP Morgan Chase (JPM Chase) had bought it for $10 a share, at the regulator’s urging. After LB fell, who would be next? And if LB, who was not at risk? Despite the earlier U.S. government bailouts of the erstwhile government mortgage originators (and still seen as government-sponsored enterprises, or GSEs), the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), and the later bailout of the...

...Erasmus University of Rotterdam Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship The Impact of entrepreneurship education programs on entrepreneurial intentions: An application of the theory of planned behavior Master Thesis Sofia Karali 357726 Supervisor: Pr. Dr. Roy Thurik Erasmus School of Economics Co-reader: Hendrik Halbe MSc Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship Erasmus School of Economics Rotterdam 2013 Abstract Though many researchers have focused on entrepreneurship education, little research has been conducted on the precise effects and overall effectiveness of the entrepreneurship education programs. Drawing on the theory of planned behavior, this study investigates the impact of entrepreneurship programs on the entrepreneurial intention of students in higher education in the Netherlands. Data for this study is drawn from GUESSS (an international project investigating the entrepreneurial spirit of students worldwide). The results show that participants of entrepreneurship education programs are more likely to have higher intention (right or five years after their studies have been completed) to found their own businesses compared to nonparticipants. Furthermore, attitude toward entrepreneurship, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control mediate the aforementioned relationship. The findings of this report contribute both to the Theory of Planned Behavior and to the field of entrepreneurship education. 1 Contents Acknowledgements 1. Introduction 2. Literature...
