Do you currently use any specific strategies to help improve your memory? If so, please share them. If not, what kinds of things might you try in the future to help improve your memory?

When it comes to a specific strategy that I use to improve my memory, I would have to say I like to doodle. If I am sitting in a boring class or meeting, I start to draw hearts, flowers, peace signs, faces, retracing words or letters, etc. in my margins. It may seem like I am paying less attention or not paying attention at all, when doodling, but in reality the act of me drawing allows me to keep my brain active. Just sitting there when I am bored makes it easier for me to tune out and as a result I remember less information. Doodling in lectures and meetings seems to ease tension for me and diminishes boredom. When doodling, I am not actually spacing out, I am making my thoughts come together, congealing my own ideas. Also, being a health fanatic, I get plenty of sleep and exercise, which has been proven to help with memory. Physical activity increases alertness and oxygen supply to the brain, helping to improve memory along with numerous other things. Sleep is when it consolidates information learned into a long-term memory, so if you stay awake for long periods of time, your brain can not go through this process, therefore getting plenty of rest is essential when improving memory.

Phi105 Comparison Essay

...PHI/105 September 12, 2013 Comparison Essay Existentialism starting in the 19th century philosophers focused on the individual, and the actions they use. Using many exaggerated concepts such as the world being so absurd that no explanation can be made, with why and what. This seems a little farfetched for me to believe, as everything has a explanation, and a specific perception in the eye of those affected. One major point made is that without taking on problems honestly and avoiding confrontation, our life will only deteriorate. Existentialism is the farthest from the act of truly thinking, yet doing, confronting, and acknowledging the existence of a problem we will struggle to find a point to our life’s(Pg. 152). Pragmatism starting in the mid to late 19th century by a few philosophers such as C.S. Pierce, William James, and John Dewey. They focused on a still very debatable topic still now, being that there is no absolute truth. The truth is ever changing as data is constantly being collected (Pg. 206). This doesn’t mean that no one person can accept a truth, but that they are to accept the truth presented to them at the moment, knowing that later on it will change because of new data. Analytic Philosophy seems to be the hardest to explain as there is no set rules for how this is used, it seems as if analytic philosophy is the combination of different philosophy teachings. I wish I understood the exact meaning more, that analysis of language and uses, but after reading...

Phi105 Project Proposal

...Find at least two peer-reviewed sources in the University Library and discuss in your proposal how those sources support or refute your opinions. The following are useful resources that are available on the Multimedia page of the University Library: * Issues & Controversies * Issues & Controversies in American History * Global Issues in Context What is the first topic that comes to mind when you think of world-wide controversial issues? For me, the biggest and most wide-spread issue is that of abortion. What is right and what is wrong? Are there exceptions to when abortion is okay? Do sexual offenses against a victim make abortion a “fair” decision? What about genetic testing that shows serious medical problems for a fetus? “Abortion is the most often topic written about in School. Abortion is the most often topic debated in School. Abortion is the final outcome of one out of every three pregnancies in the U.S. Abortion divides our country, our religions, our family, our society and our politics.” – This quote comes from the home page of abortioninfo.org and sums up most of the reason why I have chosen this topic to write about. This topic can keep a feminist talking and is the baseline for many political campaigns which are dependent on whether or not the elected official is pro-abortion or not. Feminism ties best into the subject of abortions because women have rights to their own bodies and the freedom to reproduce and keep the child or to abort...

Free Will Versus Determinism

...Argument and logic Free will versus determinism is the excerpt I chose for this argument and logic assignment .Free will and determinism have opposite meanings so the belief of free will and also atoms doing what they do being predetermined cannot be true .unless the given circumstance makes it true .Let me explain free will is defined as the power given to human beings to make their own choices that is unconstrained by external circumstances or by fate or divine will .Determinism is defined as that every event or act and decision is an inescapable consequence of antecedents that are independent of free will .Which states that humans do not have free will to chose. This is not caused because anything or anybody is trying to control humans it just is. This belief is true in religion and cause and effect .Many religious people believe that the existence of god supports determinism .Because that god is all knowing and all powerful so there is nothing that god does not know or that he does not already know .If people had free will there would be things that people would do that god does not already know about and that would limit god being all powerful .The other argument about determinism is cause and effect this argument says the same thing would always occur due to the event .Let’s say you throw a rubber ball on the ground it would hit the ground and bounce back up .Throwing the ball against the floor was the cause and the effect was the ball bouncing .Based on this everything...

Teen Drug Abuse

...Nicole Buckman PHI105 November 13, 2012 Lisa Tervo Teenage Drug Abuse There are many illnesses that can take over a child’s life and even cause death. Drug abuse is at the top of that list. Teenage drug abuse is a common problem in today’s society and has increased over the last fifty years but, what most do not realize is that an increase in drug abuse leads to addiction and that addiction leads to an incurable disease. Many people do not understand how or why anyone could become addicted to drugs, especially teens. Studies have pointed out “having fun” as a teens number one reason for using drugs, but recent studies show that teens are now using drugs to problem solve or to hide feelings. The National Institute on Drug Abuse states that “by 8th grade, 52% of adolescents have consumed alcohol, 42% percent have smoked cigarettes, and 20% have used marijuana”, (National Drug Intelligence Center, 2012). The top five reasons teens abuse drugs are: stress, social acceptance or low self esteem, self medication, to rebel, and to experiment. The problem is that drugs do not care what the reason is for using them, and effects on the body and brain are the same whether teens are using to deal with a problem or using to have fun. The truth of matter is that the earlier teens starts to use, the greater the risk of becoming addicted. Dr. Manny Alvarez wrote an article on teen drug abuse becoming an epidemic. He addresses how easy it is to get a hold of prescription drugs at any age...

...Eastern and Western Philosophers Comparison Pape PHI105 David Krause University of Phoenix Axia College What is philosophy? Philosophy is the study of some of the most fundamental questions asked by mankind, such as why we are here and what the purpose of life is. Throughout the history of philosophy, there have been many influential figures coming from all corners of the planet. Despite having worldwide influences, philosophy is usually divided into eastern and western schools of thought. Eastern philosophy is centered on cognitive dimensions that revolve around meditative thinking in order to reach enlightenment, while the western school of thought subscribes to the idea of attaining salvation through a leap of faith This paper shall put forth two philosophers, one from each school of thought, discussing their unique ideas and then shall continue on to compare and contrast their ideals. Siddhartha Gautama was born into a life of privilege and wealth, being the son of a king. When Siddhartha experienced the suffering in the world, he left his wife and child to pursue a path that would uncover the cause of suffering and its cure. “After six years of wandering and meditation, he found enlightenment.” (Moore & Bruder, 2008, p.530) With this attained enlightenment, Siddhartha Gautama took up the handle that he is known by today, Buddha which means “the Enlightened One.” Siddhartha’s new enlightenment led to the creation of Buddhism, which “essentially was a philosophical...
