Therefore, people can get a taste of foreign culture and food without splurging on international travel. As of 2016, Philadelphia’s total population is 1,567,872 and 13.1% of the population is foreign born (US Census Bureau). Study indicated that racial composition was associated with the changes in food outlet distributions (Chen & Wang, 2014). The Philadelphia Convention 1787

...The Philadelphia Convention 1787 The Philadelphia Convention, congregated in May 1787, ending on September 17 with the signing of the Constitution, generated a powerful national government with broad powers of taxation, military defense, and authority to make laws. The first Constitution of the United States of America laid down by the Philadelphia Convention was to become the supreme law of the land. After the Revolutionary War, the country was confronted with debts, taxes, tariffs, military weakness and slavery issues. The Government was limited in its capacity to handle debts and expenses: no authority to tax the states and the people and no means to raise money in order to repay the war debts. A revision of the Articles of Confederation was required. Hence a Constitutional Convention was called in Philadelphia in May 1787 and continued through the hot Philadelphia summer for sixteen weeks until September, for the sole purpose of revising the Articles of Confederation. Fifty-five delegates representing 13 states gathered, while Rhode Island refused to send a delegate. The delegates debated in secrecy, behind closed windows and curtains, slowly working out their disagreement by debating how much power should be given to the national government and how should this power be allocated. Rather than revising the Articles of Confederation, they devised a scheme for a powerful national government. Several plans were presented, but two of them stood out. James Madison introduced...

Cultural Event Report - the Philadelphia Art Museum

...The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview about my experience attending the Philadelphia Art Museum on March 15, 2013. The museum is Located in Philadelphia, PA and the exhibition that caught my attention was Journeys to New Worlds it explores the artistic exchanges between Spain and Portugal and their colonies in the Americas and Asia during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. (The Philadelphia Museum of Art, p. Philadelphia Art Museum). A journey to New Worlds originates The exhibition is magnificent and two pieces that I enjoyed were Our Lady of Mount Carmel with Bishop Saints, and Our Lady of Pomata, a coquera. It is extremely quite as people stop in different areas to look around at so much art. I personally found some place to sit and absorb as much information as I could. My fiancé came along with me only because it is a long drive from where I live and I do not like driving far by myself. He enjoyed it as much as I did; we both sat there and studied different pieces for quite a while. Although Our Lady of Mount Carmel with Bishop Saints interested me you seem to understand the comparison while looking at it after being there, I feel that this picture focuses on the child because he is the center of this image, and the mother's love and caring that is expressed in her face and in the way that she is holding the kid. Looking for some reference about the painting I found that it is Roberta and Richard Huber’s collection reflects the arts at continuing...

...Facts of film (What is the film about): Philadelphia is a film about a lawyer who was fired due to his sexual preference and being infected with AIDS. He had kept this information from his employers due to the circumstances in which he most likely contracted the deadly virus- engaging in homosexual activities. He didn’t feel comfortable informing his employer about his sexual preference due to a session in which much fun was made about homosexuals. During trial, his employers try to demonstrate that they were unaware of his condition or sexual preferences as he did not inform them. However, one of his partners had worked with a woman who had contracted AIDS via a blood transfusion and was familiar with the lesions. Rules of Law raised in film (if none, state none): Issues at hand are discrimination and wrongful firing due to a disability. Andrew, being a homosexual with aids, was discriminated upon. He was wrongfully let go and informed that it was due to his inability to perform at the level he was expected and had performed in the past. The Americans with Disabilities Act clearly prohibits discrimination based on a disability. Any impairment, physical or mental, that significantly limits major life activity is considered to be a disability. Andrew was able to perform his job without too much difficulty, so the fact that they were trying to fire on the grounds that he was sloppy with his work and the quality diminished was just a pretext for getting rid of him. It builds...

Essay One

...When it came time to start looking at colleges, I knew that I wanted one that provided fashion merchandising as a major. I wanted a regular college and not one that was specified for only fashion. After looking at several universities that fit my description, I was left feeling like I would never find a school that felt right for me. When my parents mentioned Philadelphia University, I immediately said, “No thank you.” The university is located a mere fifteen minutes from my house and at the time, I thought that was just way too close to home. I pushed the idea of going to PhilaU to the back of my brain, but one day I decided to look up and see what this school was all about. After reading up on their credentials and all of the jobs people who went there received after graduation, I knew I had to give the school a chance. I took a tour of the university and fell in love. Not only is the campus beautiful, but the reputation of the fashion merchandising program is very impressive. I am very glad that I did not let the closeness of the school affect my decision in choosing Philadelphia University. Now that I’m here and finally living the college experience, I couldn’t be happier. I love the atmosphere of the campus, the quaintness of the small student to teacher ratio, and the people that I have met so far. I feel at home here and I am confident in saying that the next four years will prepare me for my future...

There is an extraordinary metal bell is in the middle of the stamp – the Liberty Bell, a venerable historic relic that I am going to analyze in the rest of this research paper. The bell was first known by the world as a metal musical instrument in ancient China. Tuned bells in that age were created and played to be performed only for imperial families and noblemen, as a symbol of power and status. Later on, bells became widely used in different religions. For example, bells played an important role in the Eastern world of Buddhism and Hinduism as temple bells. In western world, bells were commonly used as church bells or town bells for gathering people together. In 1752, the Quaker William Penn, legislator and founder of the Pennsylvania colony in 1682, had decided and commissioned the bell to be cast in London, and brought to North America to hang in the State House of the colony of Pennsylvania. “They had ordered very precisely...

Greek Revival

...giving the appearance of Greek temples. In Greece, the temples were built of marble painted in primary colors. When they were discovered by Europeans in the eighteenth century, the paint was gone. Therefore, people associate the Greek Revival with white. William Strickland (1788-1854) was instrumental in the growth of the Greek Revival style in America. He was the son of a carpenter who worked constructing the Bank of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Benjamin Latrobe, the designer of the bank, took Strickland on as an assistant for three years. In 1818, William Strickland submitted a design for the Second Bank of the United States, in Philadelphia. Nicholas Biddle, the president of the bank, more than likely chose Strickland’s design because it was based on a Greek temple. William Strickland relied heavily on the information in Stuart and Revett’s Antiquities of Athens, for inspiration for his designs. After the success of the Second Bank, Strickland received a series of commissions in the 1820s and 1830s for public buildings in Philadelphia one of which was the Merchants’ Exchange. Ammi Burnham Young (1798-1874) was one of the first American-born professional architects to work in the Greek Revival style. He was the son of a New England carpenter and opened his office as an architect in Burlington, Vermont in 1830. He designed the Vermont State House and several buildings on the Dartmouth College campus. He also designed the Customs House in Boston. Ithiel Town (1784-1844)...
