The ethical issues that are exemplified within this case are organizational structure, international obligations, as well as trade secrets. The organization seems to have a vertical work system between all levels of management and work staff. I say organization structure due to the fact that there are disagreements between different levels of staffs’ interpretations of situations dealing with company’s future. International obligations are an issue due to the fact that the deal is involving Mexico. Trade secrets would then fall in place with the idea of hiding relevant game changing information from lower staff due to potential unhappiness that might overcome those workers who can be easily replaced. In this situation only two must address these ethical issues in the end. You are a manager in the human resources and community relations department of the True Love Yacht Company. After doing a mandatory year at the headquarters you are given a job which puts you under an immediate superior by the name of George Kittredge. You receive the information about the company’s future intentions from Elizabeth Imbrie, but the issue lies between you and Kittredge. He becomes infuriated about the potential leak and says that statements like that are what cause meltdowns within labor relations. He almost even seems to threaten your job by saying, “Why don’t you take a little time to reflect on your position in this firm and where your real obligations lie. We will discuss this again next week.” Yet after a meeting with Kittredge’s supervisor, your actions are actually applauded. With that being said you are strictly left with dealing with the conversation that will take place between Kittredge and you during the bargaining session. The aggressive nature of Kittredge really escalates the issue when I feel as though it could simply be solved through adult conversation. Kittredge could just sweep the incident under the rug and leave it alone. Yet from the language used as well as the e-mail, that doesn’t seem like much of an option to him. For you, there are two options. You could either be open about the entire situation, including the conversation with both Elizabeth as well as Kittredge’s supervisor. The alternate option would be to keep your source of the information confidential, and let Kittredge handle you how he feels appropriate. Knowing that you have the approval of his superior might make this decision a little easier. If you decide to lay everything on the line, he could potentially approve of your honesty and take a different stride due to his supervisor’s feelings on the situation. This would be the most positive outcome since you all have to continue to work together in the future. Worst case being honest could get Elizabeth in trouble and potentially risk her job. If you choose to stay silent on the situation and not speak on who gave you the risky information, this could put your own job on the line getting you fired instead. If I was involved, I would start off by informing Kittredge of his supervisor’s response. The simple fact that a superior of his is actually applauding my actions should turn some of his frustration into a much better understanding of how to handle the situation worst case. If this was still an issue of who informed me, I would have to give up Elizabeth. Yet I wouldn’t allow a total bombardment of her and her information. Questionable actions not in the best interests of the workers are a very important issue as well as highly respectable when you take it into your own hands to attempt to resolve any wrongdoing. I obviously got the job due to my skill sets. I am a valued member of this team and essential to any negotiations due to me being bilingual. With me also coming from an elite, well-renowned international business school my opinion and position within the company would be more respected than to just get rid of me due to miscommunication amongst different levels of control for the company. I bring too much to the table to feel threatened by a power hungry, anxious supervisor. My intentions are good and I believe that would speak louder than any mistakes made by either side.
