Gautama rebelled and took drastic measures that included abandoning the life he was given, self denial of nourishment, and extended periods of meditation in which he achieved the highest level of knowledge called nirvana, hence the name the Buddha, which means “the Enlightened One” (Carner, 2005, p. 114-115). Identity Buddhism is a dharmic religion that charted off from Hinduism and thus becoming independent of Hindu’s vague philosophy and unsatisfying goals (Carner, 2005, p. 114). While Buddhism is a religion, it is also a philosophical belief system in terms of life in general; it teaches how to save oneself from life’s suffering and aguish by following very specific rules through doctrines known as Pali Canon, which were developed shortly after the death of Gautama. Pali Canon also called the Tripitaka, contained rules for conduct, methods for spiritual attainment, and the ethics taught by the Buddha (Rast, Contender Ministries, n.d.). This one sentence summary found at the very end of Luke 18:9-14 should give us all a good slap in the face. This particular passage is of vital importance in the Christian walk. Luke 18:9-14 tells us about a Pharisee and a tax collector who both go to a temple to pray. The Pharisee stands before God praying about himself; he thanks God that he is not like other men and women and that he is not like the tax collector beside him. At the same time, the tax collector lays himself down before the Lord praying that God have mercy on him, a sinner. Recognizing his sin and unworthiness the tax collector humbles himself and asks for the Lords mercy; which brings him forgiveness and peace. The Pharisee on the other hand looks down upon the tax collector and even thanks God that he is not like other men and women. This sense of self drives a wedge in the Pharisees relationship to God and also brings wrath and judgment upon himself. As I read this passage I found myself saying, "I must remain humble." Asking that question daily in every situation and circumstance will help each to avoid a mind set of self-righteousness as seen in Luke 18:9-14. (cf. Described as an inborn error of amino acid metabolism, phenylketonuria (PKU) was the first genetic disorder found to be due to a specific enzyme deficiency, resulting in a patient's inability to metabolise a specific amino acid appropriately. Classical PKU is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH). Over 70 different mutations on the PAH gene found on Chromosome 12 have been found to cause the almost complete absence of PAH as seen in PKU patients. PKU patients deficient in PAH are unable to metabolise the amino acid phenylalanine leading to an accumulation of phenylalanine and it's metabolites within the body. PKU is an example of an autosomal recessive disorder. Causes Phenylketonuria (PKU) is inherited, which means it is passed down through families. Both parents must pass on the defective gene in order for a baby to have the condition. This is called an autosomal recessive trait. Babies with PKU are missing an enzyme called phenylalanine hydroxylase, which is needed to break down an essential amino acid called phenylalanine.
