George Evans said, “Every child can learn, just not on the same day, or in the same way.” As a special education graduate student, I strive to exemplify the SOE Mission and Values in my everyday life, current job, and future career as an educator. One of my greatest roles as a future special education teacher is to advocate for my students and provide them with the education they deserve. As an educator, I will encourage diversity within the classroom and community and lead by example. These students are much more than their disability, and they deserve to be treated as such. I will make every effort to encourage my general education colleagues to teach in a way that allows students with disabilities to grow and succeed in their classroom. …show more content…
Advocating for students with disabilities incorporates the SOE value of diversity and social justice. I will encourage social interactions with nondisabled peers in school and the community. This includes, but is not limited to, peer mentors, sports, and clubs. I currently work with some amazing middle school individuals that participate in the school musical, play, and basketball team. The amount of joy those boys receive from being included in these groups and teams makes me beyond happy. Not every school is this inclusive for individuals with disabilities, but this brings me hope. I am hopeful that my role as a special education teacher and advocate will encourage whichever school I am employed with to promote inclusion in extracurricular activities and general education classrooms. These interactions provide exceptional memories and interactions between all students involved, and positive social interactions should be encouraged for all …show more content…
I know the strengths that I bring as a future special education teacher, as well as my weaknesses. Through the teacher education program, I hope to build on my weaknesses and make those skills stronger. I value growth and development. I will continue to learn so that I may grow as an educator and provide my students with the education they deserve.
The opinions and views people have towards individuals with disabilities is beginning to change in a positive way. That being said, much still needs to change. I will strive to create a caring and safe environment for my students while they are in school. I want my students to feel strong and independent. My students should always feel that our classroom is a safe environment where they are supported 100 percent of the time. Also, the parents of my students should know that their children are always supported in my classroom. Even when times are stressful and become difficult, everything I do is to support

Philosophy of Special Education

...Philosophy of Special Education Marchelle Mitchell EDU 535 February 4, 2015 Valerie Klaus Philosophy of Special Education The purpose of schooling is to help our special education students to be functional and independent in the real world. I want them to learn how to deal with real life situations and to be able to understand and adapt to the changes it may bring. For example, being an autism teacher of high school students, my philosophy is different than of an autism teacher of elementary students. The most important thing of concern for the older students is to make sure they are as independent as possible and teach them some type of job skill to help them acquire a pay check to help with their care. I also help them have an alternative to destructive behavior so they are able to work in the community in some fashion. Teaching students in the special education environment all learn at different paces and at different levels. Even though the students are of high school age, they are nowhere close to being on the same educational level as their peers. I have to teach at their level even if the level is at an elementary grade level. I want them to understand and have knowledge of what can help them as they grow older. The sooner you understand as a special education teacher you have to change your teaching style to each individual student, the more success you will have with each student and the more joy you will have in your career. The key is no student learns like the...

Special Education Philosophy

...Educational Philosophy Southern New Hampshire University “A teacher affects eternity: he can never tell where his influence stops,” a quote from Marcus Tullius Cicero. I believe that my role as an educator will forever affect the students that I will encounter. To me my role is more than being a teacher; I play an intricate part in how children perceive education. For the year that I teach those students it will be my actions that will entice children to want to be in school and learn. I will be in the position not only in educating them, but to get to know them as individuals. I believe that by assessing each student for their individual qualities I will be able to provide differentiated instructions to connect with each student. My direction in education is to teach middle school science. I chose the subject of science because I feel that this subject can be difficult to understand and overwhelming. I know for me, I had to work hard to learn and understand certain topics in science. But because of my teachers and the way they taught; I began to love science. That is what inspired me to want to become a science teacher. I look forward to creating a curriculum that will challenge students to apply concepts and analyze results. I want to witness children not only learning, but becoming involved in their education. I see myself as a teacher following several theories immersed in education. One theory I accept as a true concept is the constructivism theory...

My Special Education Philosophy

...SPECIAL EDUCATION - PHILOSOPHY My Special Education Philosophy S. Bruce Butrym Grand Canyon University: SPE 529N January 26TH, 2012 My Special Education Philosophy Philosophy…Webster defines that thought as, “a discipline comprising as a core logic, aesthetics, ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology.” With all due respect to Mr. Webster, combining the aforementioned subjects within a philosophical statement for one’s purpose in life may be the correct approach for ivy leagued institutions, but for an individual striving to reach high school age students within the Autistic Spectrum, in a TMD self-contained classroom; leaning ever so closely to a PMD format, a more down to earth approach would seem more appropriate. As such, after reviewing each of the core areas of philosophy, the subject of Metaphysics drew my attention. Defined in layman terms… Metaphysics allows me to, for one, to consider all I interact with within the schools four walls as “real beings”; and secondly, to consider those “real beings” as “genuine constituents” of the world that can hopefully can add additional strength to the makeup of that world. A major component to the development of my philosophy was to take advantage of the opportunity to interview a number of staff from my local high school; to review what these seasoned staff members had developed...

Special Education Teaching Philosophy

...Katherine Fox My Teaching Philosophy The elementary age is a crucial time in students’ lives as this is when they are exposed to classroom learning for the first time. It is at this period when most students form their opinions on school which, typically, last their whole school careers. Teachers play a vital role in forming this outlook. I believe this because of my younger brother, Drew. He has never liked school, and school was a constant struggle for him, my mother, and my father. Drew’s dislike for school began in the first grade when he had a teacher who told him he was stupid. Throughout the whole school year all she did was put him down. Unfortunately Drew did not get officially diagnosis with ADHD until he was in the eighth grade. Even though he did not have this official diagnosis in his earlier career, his teachers should have given him differentiated instructions. From Drew’s negative experiences and as a future educator, I will never discourage my students. It is my goal to make a difference in the life of every child I get the privileged to educate. Educating children with special needs means being aware of their abilities and reflecting upon their educational development and the best possible way of helping them. As an elementary special needs teacher of students with severe disabilities, I will develop strong bonds with each student, provide the much needed support and confidence they so desperately need. I will individualize instructional programs that will maximize...

Special Education Philosophy Statement

...oldest child, I helped to care for my siblings. I cared for my younger brother who was born with Cerebral Palsy. Because of my brother’s condition, we grew up in a house where disability was seen as a positive asset instead of a burden. Sadly, his teachers failed to see beyond his disability, therefore overlooking his intelligence. As a result, he graduated high school with a very weak reading and writing foundation. Witnessing my brother’s struggles to read and write led me to the realization of how well prepared and professional special education teachers were desperately needed in this country. Now as an adult and a special needs parent myself, I have noticed how the special education programs are still in need of good teachers. My son who has Autism and is non-verbal has been my biggest inspiration and drive throughout my college journey. He is the reason why I want to prepare myself to be able to provide the support and guidance to other special needs children just like him....

Personal Philosophical Statement

...Personal Philosophy of Special Education Grand Canyon University SPE-529N: Special Education Foundation and Frameworks Philosophy of Special Education I believe that as a special educator, I would like to create a classroom with quality content. As an educator, one should be considerate of the learner’s needs. If there is a teacher who only utilizes one teaching method, I believe that the teacher should not continue to educate children. I believe that no two students are the same. Like a seashell, no two students are alike. All children possess different gifts or learning styles, and I believe that all students are adept of learning anything that they put their minds to. I believe that the parent should be a major part of the students’ learning process. Learning is an adventure in which the teacher, child, and parent should take part of. I will create a structured environment for my students to succeed. Teachers should provide productive and structured environment in order for a student to experience academic success. If the students are not within a structured environment, they will not be able to succeed in learning. I believe that the classroom shall have classroom rules that would be effective throughout the whole year. The career of being a special education teacher is a lifelong process in which you learn new strategies, philosophies, and gain experience from students and parents. Because of this, I feel that I will always have an open mind and heart...

Education of Students with Disability in America

...Education of Individuals with Disability Name: Institution: Education of Individuals with Disability History of Special Education In the early 18th century, people with disability were often ignored, obscured, or put to death. First efforts to provide education for disabled students were focused on students with sensory problems such as the deaf and blind. During the 19 and early 20th century, schools that were specialized in providing education to students with disability emerged in United States and Europe. The extremely published story of Helen Keller influenced the introduction of education for disabled people in America. In 1887, Anne Sullivan who was Helen’s teacher said that he will not give up in offering education to the deaf and the blind, and she succeeded in teaching a five year old Helen how to communicate (Ashbaker, 2011, p. 25). Prior to 1965, there were no free education services provided to students with serious disabilities. These students were barred from attending school. Most of the students with severe disabilities used to put up in institutions. Many students who had mild disabilities and were not in a position to complete high school without any help did not have any other alternative other than dropping out of school. To appreciate developments that have placed disabled students in normal learning classroom, it is important to understand the legislative history that led to this move. Back in 1954, there was a civil rights case that involving...

Philosophy of Education

...My Personal Philosophy of Special Education Christina L. Richardson Grand Canyon University: SPE-529N November 18, 2012 My Personal Philosophy of Special Education As educators, we need a foundation for why we want to teach, where students with different disabilities fit in that foundation, a rationale for how we teach, and a principle that keeps us striving to be the best educators we can be. The purpose of this essay is to point out what I believe the foundation, student location, rationale, and principle are for why I want to become a teacher. Special Education Philosophy I believe every child is entitled to an education no matter what race, socio-economic status, or disability. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) ensures that every child is given the opportunity to have a highly qualified education while Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires children with disabilities be given a free appropriate public education (FAPE) that meets their individual needs. The latest version of IDEA also works together with NCLB to give children with disabilities the same opportunity of high quality instruction. This causes the responsibility for the progress and performance of children with disabilities to be shared by the general and special education teachers. (Cortiella, 2006, p. 10) As a special education teacher, I will work with general education teachers and collaborate to make sure the individual needs of students with disabilities are met. I believe that...

History

...Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world. Epistemology or theory of knowledge is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope of knowledge. Axiology is the philosophical study of value. It is either the collective term for ethics and aesthetics. And Logic is the study of arguments. When I thought about my own personal views for educational philosophy, I thought back to my educators in school, my parents, and peers that have made a difference in my life. Compared to the history of logic the demarcation between philosophy of logic and philosophical logic is of recent coinage and not always entirely clear. Characterizations’ include Philosophy of logic is the arena of philosophy devoted to examining the scope and nature of logic. Philosophy of logic is the investigation, critical analysis and intellectual reflection on issues arising in logic. The field is considered to be distinct from philosophical logic. Philosophical logic is the branch of logic concerning aspects other than or outside of formal logic. Philosophical logic is the application of formal logical techniques to philosophical problems. My educational philosophy is based on personal experience, and from daily observations. I believe that the purpose of today’s schools go above and beyond...

...addition, there are times in our profession that will allow students to slide by and not hold them responsible for the material because of an aptitude reason, behavioral reason or other reason. However, we are not doing them any favors and will eventually cause issues down the line for both the student and his eventual teacher. We must do our best to reach every student and prepare them for the next step in their education. Decision Making Essay: How and why I came up with the title and theme of my educational philosophy paper is because the subject is something that I have thought about and have had discussions about with my peers. I did not get to use as much research as I would have liked due to my schedule, which has been burdensome and difficult. Inclusion

...Special Education Inclusion Jessica Thammavongsa Com/156 March 8, 2014 Diane Moore Special Education Inclusion The process towards inclusive educations is just that – a process. It can be a rewarding, yet challenging journey to create an educational system where excellence and equality walk hand in hand (Frost & Pearpoint, 2004). Throughout the last several years, the topic of inclusion has been at the epicenter of debate among educators, administrators, and parents. Inclusion remains a controversial concept because it relates to educational and social values, as well as to our understanding of personal worth ("Special Education Inclusion", 2001). Placing students with varying disabilities into regular education classrooms causes misunderstanding with educators and administrators on the advantages and disadvantages of inclusion. Inclusion is a "philosophy that brings students, families, educators, and community members together to create schools and other social institutions based on acceptance, belonging, and community."(Salend, 2001, p. 5) Inclusion is practiced in schools to establish collaborative, supportive, and nurturing environments for learners that are based on giving all students the services and accommodations that they need to learn, as well as respecting and learning from each other's individual differences. (Salend, 2001) Inclusion is not necessarily just focused on students with disabilities. When implemented correctly it is also designed...

The present century demands an integrated teacher who can shape the inner potentiality of a learner through an integrated approach of knowledge of the content area and of the philosophy of teaching. Since, India won Independence; attempt has been made to formulate a national education policy. Every nation needs an educational philosophy for building up a sound system of education. India has passed through various stages of development during different periods. Since Brahmanistic education it has followed the monastic scholastic, realistic, idealistic and pragmatic trends when values changed and new priorities emerged. India is a land where values have emerged and influenced the cultural life of the land. The cross-cultural studies of modern values show an increasing tendency towards materialistic and self-centered outlook. The world in which we live today is shrinking every day, but every nation is busy in building a wall of prejudice. This is why we need to develop an Indian Philosophy of Education. Since 1944 and uptil now about 150 philosophical studies have been carried out on education, out of which only 10 studies...

Why I Want to Become a Teacher

...Why I Want To Become A Teacher Philosophy of Education / Why I want to become a teacher? Philosophies vary from time to time because we live in a world that moves at a very fast pace, and we have to move our ideas with it. I have pursued a BA in Communications and a MA in Secondary Education with a concentration in educational technology. Now, I teach with my English minor, and I absolutely love it. As an educator, I want prepare students not only for college, but for the world we live in today. My philosophy of education is very simple. I believe that learning should be fun while still conducive to learning! I am also a firm advocate of the 21st century learning tools and strategies; I want to show students to take advantage of all the tools that are accessible for them to use to enhance their education. During the pursuit of my degree, I was very fortunate to have an array of different teachers with different teaching styles and different philosophies. However, I was fortunate to have had a few very special teachers who passionately touched my life and whom I’ll never forget. Their contributions and works are quite an inspiration in my career. In putting together this philosophy my purpose is to put together a philosophy that stands on a plan that I believe will most successfully engage real world learning. I strongly believe that engaging students in real-life lessons and hands on activities gives you an opportunity as an educator to make problem-solvers...
