...Precious Parker Orientation to Education Professor Lewis Philosophy Statement As I was growing up, I always wanted to pursue a profession in something that I could use my creative mind and hands for, such as art. It was my senior year of high school when I decided I wanted to pursue a career in education, specifically early childhood. Most of my family works in the field of education, so I believe that is why I have always had a passion for children and why I work well with them. I always knew how important educators were in our society, but it wasn’t until I started Jumpstart that I actually experienced this importance. With the combination of experience and this philosophy statement, I have begun to think about why I want teach, whom I want to teach, how and what I want to teach, and where I want to teach? These questions are important to answer for anyone who wants to be an educator because you have to passion and understanding why you want to be in the field of education. Children are the future leaders of this country; therefore, it is our job to supply them with the foundation and fundamentals to succeed in life. ...Teaching Philosophy Statement I am not yet a teacher but have had a strong desire to be one ever since I was a child. I recall playing with my sisters and I loved playing the role as a teacher. I grew up in a bilingual environment. As a child I knew how to speak and read Spanish but, I was lacking grammar skills. I wanted to know my home language fluently in all aspects. Therefore, I want to facilitate my future students to be able to learn a second language. My drive is to pursue a higher education to my students that way they could become successful life. I am going to act like a guide to them and promoting respect to all my students. It is my life aspiration to be an excellent high school teacher who motivates students to achieve the highest level of education. Not only I am pushing myself but also, I want to be a teacher to push my students to excellence. Perseverance is my motto, and I want to pass that on to my students. I want them to see my example: I’ve worked hard and never once gave up on what I wanted to become –their teacher. I believe that my role as a teacher is to give my students the tools necessary to be successful. In order to accomplish this goal, I will find ways to teach each student based on their needs that way all my students will feel capable and successful. Another way that I would help my students is by incorporate themes, projects, group work, to make my students active learners. I want to inspire Spanish and English speakers to ascertain their...

...Teaching: Making an Impact in Student’s Lives All little kids are asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” If I was told in the beginning of my teaching journey that I personally would make it this far and accomplish the dreams I always desired to, I would call you impractical. Growing up I knew what I aimed to be in the future: I aspired to be a teacher. In high school, I received the opportunity to be in two classes that would help me live my future before it came; teaching may take a while, however the lessons learned along the way, and the outcome, is so worth the wait. Becoming a teacher comes with obstacles, lessons, tests, etc., therefore, going into teaching one needs to know what teaching is, how to get there, and what comes with the job. In early childhood, an individual needs to be taught the basics, kindergarten teachers are there to help shape the children for the school years to come. “For many five- and six-year-olds, kindergarten is their first school experience. Thus, a Kindergarten Teacher's first teaching goal is to help children become comfortable and accustomed to a formal classroom setting.” (Ferguson’s Career Guidance). Teachers go to school to study ways to educate students with what is being learned in their classroom. “Kindergarten and elementary school teachers help students learn and apply important concepts. Many teachers use a hands-on approach to help students understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical-thinking...

...Being a teacher its vital to have a powerful faith in the future. Teaching is one of the most powerful of role models. I truly believe teachers are the future of our education. One thing that specifically led me into teaching is having parents in the education system. My mom being a Kindergarten teacher and my dad being an 8th grade social studies teacher has empowered me to further the role of “teaching.” Also, being able to have an impact on many students through the years seems to be very rewarding. Ultimately, the teacher can be a very vital resource for the students and to have the responsibly of that can be very powerful. Part of being a teacher is arranging your classroom according to your fit and your students fit. With this being said, my classroom would be arranged to support Montessori’s theory. The classroom is separated into categories where there is Math, Communication, and Literacy sections. The concept of the classroom design is to allow students to visualize and actually interact with objects. Everything is hands on. For example; In the Montessori video the girl demonstrates shapes that illustrate land, lakes, and islands. The teaching style focuses on respecting children and their learning, observing children, preparing different learning environments, and introduce learning materials and demonstrate lessons. The role of the teacher using Montessori’s practice lies under three basic areas of child involvement. Looking at the practical life of the children,...

...My perspective of teaching has drastically changed within the last year due more exposure to formal and informal educational settings. Currently, I am volunteering in third grade class (where the majority of students are middle class) and working at a middle school (where majority of students have free or reduced lunch). My experiences at both locations, in addition to my past work experience, has vastly contributed to what I have come to value in an exceptional educator. Through observation and reflection, I have developed ideas for what aspects I wish to incorporate in my future teaching and classroom. Some of these aspects are the purpose of structure, teacher to student connection, and more emotional support for teachers. As an aspiring educator, I look forward to how my ideas will take shape in a practical setting. Knowing that structure was important, I began reflecting what the purpose of it was when I observed a situation in which structure was not beneficial. At the middle school I work at, there are a number of students who regularly receive detentions during lunch. The point of detention is to deter misbehavior. However, if the same students are at detention on a regular basis, what is the purpose of detention? Perhaps this is an indicator that there is something more going on for those students. In my future classroom, I hope that I can develop routines that truly benefit the students. Additionally, I want to be particularly cautious in the consequences I choose,...

...soldiers differently but treat them all as one team. I try to find that one good trait in whomever I am developing and use it to help them in the process of being leaders. I will also show them the big picture of the task or mission. Majority of the time, I will ask each individual how they will complete a task to see their thought process. If it is a good idea I will let them carry on, but if I can point out another way that I think is more efficient or beneficial to the NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS 3 mission, then I will advise them. I want my future leaders to think of multiple ways to accomplish tasks so they can learn to think outside the box. My philosophy in letting soldiers think independently and not be micromanage will show my future leaders that when they are in a leadership position they too will not micromanage unless warranted. I witness soldiers who were micromanage and could not show their leadership qualities. I knew then not to do to micromanage when I was put in a leadership position. I was always a soldier and person who showed initiative in everything I was involved in. I wanted to show other leaders that I could be left to accomplish a task or job with limited supervision. Today, I look for the same type of soldier that shows initiative in becoming better leaders and soldiers. I find it easier to prep them for future success because they want what you have earned. They...

...Nowadays, leadership is emphasized in school and the workplace. Leadership doesn’t come naturally to others but these skills are teachable. A select few are chosen or volunteer to lead a group. I am usually the one to volunteer. People have come up to me and told me that I inspire them to be better. Sometimes it's hard to be a leader and I just want to take the back seat. It is especially challenging to get everyone on board with one idea. It is even more difficult to persuade all participants to reach a goal by taking the same route. I have been a youth ambassador in Japan, leading workshops on social justice issues in America with fellow high schoolers. I am an active youth leader at Global Kids where I have led campaigns and workshops in school and at other events. I have held positions such as President, Vice President and Secretary in National Honor Society and Student Government Association. I may have held a lot of leadership roles, however it takes more than just a title to say someone is a successful leader. There are a few highlights of my personality that aids in my success as a leader. I am a good mediator. When in student government, I was constantly helping the group come to a consensus. In addition, I am the one who supports everyone and reaches out to those who have potential. When my team and I were presenting at Tokyo university, I encouraged my friend to present as he felt and even helped him come up with his speech. When I was in The Netherlands, I helped...

...Since my sophomore year in high school, I've been able to observe in a kindergarten classroom under the guidance of Mrs. Cookie Bodie. Through this experience, I've been able to watch her positive attitude towards herself, those around her, and the subject matter she was teaching. Her teaching was inspiring to me, and I am beyond thankful for the time I was able to learn from her. The most outstanding thing I learned from her was her approach to classroom management: never back down while under fire, and always remember your goal for the class. I will never forget the difference she has made in my life and the way she has influenced me to become a teacher. One of the important qualities of an effective teacher is her attitude. If a teacher does not bring light and positivity to her classroom, anything she does will be done in vain. Attitude starts with taking a look at yourself: Mrs. Bodie has a strong grasp on who she is as a person. She has the emotional stability it takes to keep on going with life even when difficulties make it hard to continue. This character is something I experience first hand because my family is very close to hers. She is basically a grandmother to me. I've seen her go through trials such as her daughter's divorce, her granddaughter's rebellious behavior, and cancer. She approaches life with grace and dignity. The attitude she has towards herself overflows naturally into the classroom. Her students are the individuals most influenced...

...Vision, Mission and Philosophy Statement Vision: To be active in an educational environment and build a partnership with the staff, the community, and the parents so we can have a better educational experience and a brighter future for the children. Work with families of the children to create inspiration for lifelong learning so every child can learn and grow in a rich environment as well as a playful and safe educational environment. Mission: Our mission is to provide each child a quality education that they can learn in their own way and at their very own pace and to ensure they receive the help they need to learn and to grow. A young child’s work is play and we encourage them to do so through the various curriculums that we provide. We encourage children to enjoy the love of learning and seek their curiosity through play. Learning is seen as an active process where children can explore, manipulate, communicate, and discuss in different learning centers and group activities. Learning occurs when a curriculum is using all the domains of development such as physical, social, emotional, and cognitive developments. Children are our first and last priority. Philosophy: We believe that play is most important way which children learn. All children learn at their own pace and are individuals and that they learn best through educational experiences that are developmentally appropriate for their age. Parents are very important in the learning process of their children. A dedicated...

...Personal Statement of Philosophy of Teaching I am many things. A woman, wife, mother, daughter, volunteer, nurse, and teacher are my primary roles. Each of these roles is fulfilling and co-exist to define how I live my life. My life is intertwined in the lives of many others. Each has an effect on me as I also affect their lives. Nursing is a discipline of knowledge acquired both through formal education and through life experiences. The sum of these parts continues to alter and refine my nursing. My roles outside of nursing enhance my personal knowledge which I bring to my professional life. These life experiences expose me to many cultures and attitudes about life. My spiritual self allows me to maintain my inner core of who I am in relation to others. These encounters help me to see my role as a nurse through a unique lens grounded in caring. Caring defines my life, and enhances my professional role as a teacher of nursing. I continue to study to expand my empirical knowledge about nursing. I can only enhance my practice by continuing to learn from all aspects of life. Intentional learning through classes and reading are parts of how I learn. I also learn from remaining open to the unique expressions of others in their lives. My role as a teacher allows me to learn from my students in a reciprocal role. My teaching role extends to all students, rather or not they are enrolled in the courses which I teach. I listen intently to the students who trust me to...

...I chose to become a teacher because I have the desire to contribute to this country in a meaningful way. I would love to have the opportunity to make a difference in children’s lives and be the mentor and confidant they need. I have many experiences which led me to this career choice. As the oldest child, I helped to care for my siblings. I cared for my younger brother who was born with Cerebral Palsy. Because of my brother’s condition, we grew up in a house where disability was seen as a positive asset instead of a burden. Sadly, his teachers failed to see beyond his disability, therefore overlooking his intelligence. As a result, he graduated high school with a very weak reading and writing foundation. Witnessing my brother’s struggles to read and write led me to the realization of how well prepared and professional special education teachers were desperately needed in this country. Now as an adult and a special needs parent myself, I have noticed how the special education programs are still in need of good teachers. My son who has Autism and is non-verbal has been my biggest inspiration and drive throughout my college journey. He is the reason why I want to prepare myself to be able to provide the support and guidance to other special needs children just like him. As a future Special Education teacher, I want to provide my students with the skills and tools that will make them productive members of this society. I believe everyone has the potential to become whoever they...

...My Teaching Philosophy As I begin my journey as an educator, I reflect on my last four years of educational experiences to think about how I plan to teach and set up my classroom for my future students. I believe in making the environment an inviting one to all students, incorporating an inclusive classroom, and allowing students to leaders in their education. Creating an environment where all of students feel welcome and valued is extremely important. School is a place where students spend most of their days and I want them to feel safe and comfortable there. Students learn best when they are in an environment conducive to their learning needs. Fostering community within the classroom will allow students to feel valued in their thoughts and opinions. This will essentially allow students to feel safe when volunteering to answer a question. Community is not just within the classroom. There are learning experiences all around us and...

...Classroom management is essential to the success of each student as well as to the success of the teacher. It is something that I find to be one of the most important aspects of becoming a teacher and having my own classroom. The goal of classroom management is to create an environment in which every child succeeds. As a teacher, I would need to be able to anticipate my students’ actions before they happen, handle situations that do arise, and prevent them from happening again. In order for me to be able to be able to anticipate what a student will do, I need to know my students very well. It is crucial to learn about each one of my students and understand what may cause them to be upset and act out. If a student is gifted and they tend to act out and be disruptive because they finish independent work before the other students, I should know that the student needs to be challenged more and give them an alternate or supplemental assignment. By using this proactive approach, I can spearhead future disruptions. When a situation does arise, I need to know how to handle situations. Instead of reacting, I need to act. By doing this, I am not just yelling at a student for constantly calling out in class, but I am talking to the student to help them monitor why they do that and what strategies would help prevent them from calling out in class again. For example, in our textbook, Principles of Classroom Management, one case study is where a teacher sends a student to the vice-principal’s...
