...Metaphors Essay Angelica Encalada PHL/251 July 20, 2015 Deeadra Albert-Green Metaphors Essay The metaphor vs plain language. There are so many thoughts going through your mind can you really explain it in your own words? This is where metaphors come to place. Metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. (Google) Metaphors can help explain something to make it more understanding. For example, my cousin is the black sheep of the family. He really is not black nor is a sheep. A black sheep is an unusual animal that you do not usually see with the herd. My cousin is never around and when he is, he stays behind. He and the black sheep share the same characteristics, therefore, I use the metaphor, and he is the black sheep in the family. Another type of metaphor is called a conventional metaphor. These types of metaphors are sometimes constructed through our common language. Another example, someone who loves the nightlife would be referred to a ‘night owl’ versus someone who is the first one up in the morning and can take on the day with no coffee would be referred to being an early bird. Plain language unlike metaphors is clear. The language is designed for the reader to understand complete and clear as possible. Some people refrain from using plain language since it would be out of their comfort zone so they use metaphor to make their statement more understanding. The metaphor...

...Applying Problem Solving PHL/251 October 21, 2010 Rape Precautions: * Never go out alone; always bring someone you know you can truly trust * Watch your drinks closely all night and drink wisely * Stay aware of your surroundings * Don’t show fear * Trust your gut instinct at all times The Problem: I went out to a club with someone I thought I can trust, but later found out she wasn’t someone I can truly trust. I was out having a great time drinking and dancing. I allowed these two guys to continue buying me drinks all night long. I don’t remember much about that night after the drinks, but I do have some vague memories. I know for a fact that the female that I went to the club with let me leave the bar with these two guys, and that they took me to another bar. I was too drunk to drive, and I didn’t know where I was at. They continued to give me more drinks until I blacked out. From there I only remember waking up in a strange place, and when I stood up I was in so much pain that I knew something was wrong. Then I laid back down and passed out again. I don’t remember how I got home, but I did. Observation: There are many times when women do not realize that someone is putting drugs in their drinks. I have heard of numerous situations on the news about women who have been involved in date rape situations. Hypothesis: There is not enough publicity concerning date rape for women and teenage (college and high school) girls to know about the...

...The Metaphor Revolution PHL/251 The Metaphor Revolution What is a metaphor? “A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance.” http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/metaphor A brief history of metaphor go “from Aristotle through speech act theories, metaphor had been viewed as a secondary type of language.” (Black, 1955) “Modern European languages have a large number of metaphors which represent the whole of nature. Many of these, such as Mother Nature, the celestial harmony, the great chain of being, and the book of nature, are used in natural science and in literature. Most of these words can be traced back into prehistory where they arose mythologically from the same small set of images. Metaphors have a powerful influence on the framing of scientific hypothesis making, and so these words have guided the history of natural science, for good or ill, for several millennia. Newtonian mechanics, for example was motivated by the idea of celestial harmony, whereas Darwin used the images of the great chain of being and Mother Nature, and James Hutton created modern geology and ecology by mixing the images of nature as the macrocosm, and as a machine.” (Norwick, 2006) Group A critiqued each others metaphors written in Week 2. We started processing each ones metaphors and their significance and came up with the following. Connie reviewed Rachel’s metaphors...

...Nature of thought Pedro A Prieto PHL/251 Oct 27 2014 Philip Grochmal Nature of Thought Every human is unique. We all have our own thoughts and opinions and we are able to express ourselves in many different ways, as we are also able to learn from each other. No two humans think alike, it could be because of social backgrounds, cultural differences or it could be the way we see things. We as humans express ourselves in many different ways. We can express ourselves by talking, writing a letter, music and art. I think that we express our thoughts because we have something to say as individuals and we want our ideas to be heard, also we have the need to be recognized. “To base thought only on speech is to try nailing whispers to the wall” (Rosenthal, 1994). I try to enhance my memory by reading and remembering things from the past to keep everything fresh on my mind. Lately I have been trying some memory games like luminosity and brain academy, I found that my memory has improved in certain areas. Last year I thought my daughter was going to graduate in December but the reality was that she was not going to graduate on time, my perception was that I thought that her studies were on track. The reality was that she did not tell me that she failed one of her classes and she had to retake it in order to graduate. There was a difference between my perception and reality because I was misinformed. I felt empowered by my language because I was able to communicate...

...Nature of Thought Paper Sennet Perkins PHL/251 October 4, 2010 Leigh Clemons Is thinking a necessity in dealing with or handling issues on a daily basis? Every day we are faced with situations that will requires us to think on different levels. Thinking is a very imperative method of how an individual’s thoughts when being read by someone else can generate a comprehensible concept. In this paper, I will explain some of the perceptual blocks that have some bearing on my views and how I reply to it. The sensing process is a very significant part to the process of thinking. It would be very hard for an individual to think without using this process. Being able to hear, smell, touch, taste and see different things in our surroundings allows us to have multiple thoughts about what is actually going on around us and how to come up with a conclusion for the issue at hand. Memory is another significant factor of the thinking process. Memory assist individuals decipher information that has been stored in the short and long term memory. It also assists with processing information in multiple situations and recognizes concepts that has taken place in the past and build our future. The final part of thinking, the medium, is considered the most vital and is the part that transfers into the brain. Language is part of the thinking medium. Without language an individual will be unable to verbalize and/or translate information to recall or to think. Language configures...

...Critical Thinking and Language Essay Benjamin Antillon PHL/251 Dr. Lentz June 23, 2009 Prior to moving to Las Vegas all I would hear is “Las Vegas is hot as hell”. Who really knows how hot hell really is? As far as we know hell could be a comfortable seventy-two degrees and fully stocked with bible thumping Christians vying for my acceptance to Christianity. Who knows but the omnipotent rock star or god or ala (take your pick), whichever one sends the biggest shivers down your spine and lets you spill your guts to redemption. As far as hell goes I’ll let you know when I get there, but as for the Las Vegas heat goes it’s hot, but manageable as a Las Vegas stripper in heat. How does language empower or limit thoughts Language can empower or limit our expressions and thoughts. Metaphors are an implied comparison between an object or an action, but not literal. Metaphors can enrich perception and understanding by bringing clarity and understanding to the language in order to better help others understand your perspectives. Metaphors although can help the clarity of ones thoughts or perspectives, it can also limit ones understanding. Language reveals or demonstrates a particular society, thus a metaphor in one society may have a completely other meaning in another. It is this that can limit the power of metaphors and lead to a translation of murkiness. An example of this is when your telling a story and you are describing a car in your metaphor, your interpretation...

...‘ Nature of Thougt PHL/251 August 8, 2013 Instructor Nature of Thought Thought plays a significant role in our day to day lives. From the time we wake up, to the time we go to sleep, we are thinking. Thinking, sensing, memory, perceptions, personal barriers, and thoughts are key influences to the nature of thought process. In this paper, I will describe my nature of thoughts and how it impacts my views of the thoughts process. Thinking is the practice of using one’s awareness to contemplate or reason about something. In order to think, one must use their senses. The sensing process allows us to use our senses to process our thoughts. There are five senses that everyone has, and they are sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste. Memory is another vital feature of thinking. Memory is the processes that one uses to gain, collect, recollect and eventually recover information. The medium of thinking it the final part of thinking. The medium is considered the most dynamic part of thinking. It medium is transmitted into the brain. Language is a part of the thinking medium. If a person is without language, they will be incapable of expressing or interpreting information to recall or to think. When I was 19 years old, I joined the United States Army. I was so nervous when it was time to leave my loved ones and go to basic training. I had heard so many horror stories about basic training. Even though I was nervous, I knew that God would give me the strength to make it through...

...The Last Suffering Ship Reflection Dustin Teuton PHL/251 AUG 25, 2014 Robert DuBose The Last Suffering Ship Reflection The illness has taken its first life and people are starting to panic. By this point the crew has done all they can do to get the repairs done pushing them self to exhaustion. The nurses and helpers are tenting to all the patients and distributing the vaccine as fast as possible and to the right patients. I believe the way they are only giving half doses out and waiting to see who doesn’t show signs of getting better before giving the full dose is working and an affective way to calm more people down. I would try and isolate patients from non-sick passengers as much as possible to help prevent spread. For ship security most cruise lines or any kind of passenger ship should and would have a security team even if its trained crewmembers. They would also have a brig on board the ship for any type of crime that was committed, so in the case of the passengers who are starting to get edgy and wild trying to find the medication on there own and attacking crew members, I would have the security team deal with them in a manner that is stern but professional to show the rest of the passengers that in this case acting like a mad man and attacking crew to find the medication is going to land you a chance card straight to the brig. The captain should be updated by the doc every so often by a runner just to know what is going on with the illness. His main...

...Applying Problem Solving Luis Santiago PHL/251 April 23, 2013 Professor Mirta Sanchez APPLYING PROBLEM SOLVING There are so many problems in the world today, personal as much as in society as a whole. The question is, how can we solve them? The answer is, soft skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. These are arguably the most effective weapons we have against combatting these problems. Let’s explore two examples of real-world scenarios: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and Gun Violence. A recent study confirmed a direct link between tumors and Genetically Modified Organisms (Food Chem Toxicol, 2012). The scientific method was used to observe, hypothesize, experiment, and verify this conclusion, via a controlled experiment with rats over the course of two years. That’s not to say that all tumors are caused solely by GMOs, but rather that at least one of the causes for tumors have been identified. As a result of this study, many countries have banned the importing, development, and sales of GMOs, including (but not limited to) Italy, Switzerland, and New Zealand (for confirmation, search “GMO Ban” from the University of Phoenix Library). The scientific method has also been used to study the toxicity of chem trails in the air, fluoride in the water, and preservatives in food products. So why has President Obama signed into law the Monsanto Protection Act, which protects Monsanto (a large American GMO company) from federal courts? With so much evidence...

...Nature of Thought David Dawson PHL/251 26 May 2014 Abeba Salter-Woods Nature of Thought I think a lot about what it means to be in thought and how an outcome of an individual’s action is exemplified on how they took the time to actually think about what they are doing. In life, as humans, we are challenge through many different scenarios that requires us to put time and effort into thinking things through. That thinking process is the foundation of the aftermath of these scenarios. To me, human thinking is unique because we are one of a kind. I don’t believe that there is another species out there that is capable of producing results that we, as humans, are able to come up with. Other mammals might have brains that allow them to think, but not to the capacity or liking to what I believe is necessary to survive on this planet. According to “Www.ask.com” (2014), “Human thinking is unique because as far as we know, we are the only living creatures who can think and put our thoughts into action. We are the only ones who think before we act. We express our thoughts because it is human nature to want to explore and to learn.” Humans express their thought through their actions. To make are thoughts more realistic, we feel that we have to witness or perform it first hand. A thought will always remain a thought if not utilize. Most of the things that humans think about is normally fantasies and actions that need to or want to be performed, hence the reason on why we act on certain...

...The Nature of Thinking Jennifer Sumen PHL/251 August 10, 2015 Dr. Michael Newman Myers The Nature of Thinking The nature of thought plays a huge role in an individual’s everyday life, weather it is their home life or professional life. As human beings we are faced with various situations that will require thinking. It is human nature for our thought process to be influenced by perception and personal barriers. This paper will discuss why as humans our thought process is so unique, how perception can completely change a situation in our thoughts and how personal barriers can also influence your thinking. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary thinking is “the action of using your mind to produce ideas, decisions, memories etc.: the activity of thinking about something: opinion or judgement”. (Merriam-Webster) Human thinking is very unique because of the fact that we as humans have feelings. Our thoughts and feelings are often intertwined and can have a huge influence on each other. People express their thoughts in many different ways. A few examples are: verbally, written form which can be through a letter, text message writing a song or poetry an email, thoughts can even be expressed physically through facial expressions and hand gestures. Why is it we as humans do this, well because without communicating our thoughts we cannot continue to learn and grow For example, if a person had a thought that the sky was purple and the clouds were pink but they never...

...Critical Thinking Essay Student Name PHL 251 – Critical Thinking University of Phoenix For Professor March 4, 2011 Critical Thinking Thinking impacts every moment of our lives and in performing the thinking challenge the realization that thinking could potentially be above everything else in our lives else was astounding. My first instinct was to place my family above thinking on the chart but then realized without thought, my wife and I may never have met. The actuality of the situation is that we think to breathe, walk, talk, and function; in chapter 13 we have found that we need accurate data provided by our senses and memory: clear, concise, contextually accurate language; controlled and effective feelings; clear structure; and solid logic. (Kirby, 2007) Each sense in our body feds the thought process, when we touch a hot stove senses tell our brain you are being burned and we pull back our hand away. From the point of a sensation we develop a memory, for good or for bad, to ensure that we either repeat or eliminate that action and we call these situations experiences. The burning on the stove is an experience we do not want to repeat; however, our first kiss with passion and warmth is something most people keep as a pleasant experience and try to replicate it. My wife and have been married for over 22 years and she never had a driver’s license until after we were married. In our relationship she is the emotional strength and I am the directional...

...The Thinking Process Giles Dancer PHL/251 July 20, 2010 Linda Keller The Thinking Process The best way to describe “thinking,” in one person’s opinion, is to engage the mind in a logical, coherent, and impartial manner concerning assessing a given set of circumstances. The sensing process occurs when people observe and analyze without any fixed ideas. When people concentrate on individual sensations and catalog them based on our memories, we perceive; and when we make deductions about their behaviors or significance, we are thinking. A young man is riding a bicycle and senses that a car is heading for him. Out of the corner of his eye he sees the car and the sensing goes straight from his eyes to his brain. The brain examines this communication and turns it into a thought. The human memory is a very important ability of the human mind. The capacity to retain and recollect past occurrences, information, and many other important factors remains high up on the list of abilities in life. When someone lacks the ability to use his or her memory, he or she becomes dysfunctional in society. A good medium when concerning communication or storing information in one’s memory is also very important. A medium is a means or mechanism for storing or communicating information in an effective and understandable fashion. In my past I dated a younger woman for about nine months. In my wildest nightmares I would have never realized what a catastrophe would...
