...Solve a Problem PHL/458 Solve a Problem A current problem that is plaguing law enforcement agencies to include my own is the lack of manpower for the department, on the road and in the office. This topic will be discussed within this paper using the different techniques through the creative process and problem solving. There will be different ideas on how to remedy this situation from the most logical to some that are farfetched. This problem has become more of an issue with the citizens of the jurisdiction I work in. Stages In The Art of Thinking, Ruggiero says the four stages are searching for challenges, expressing the problem or issue, investigating the problem or issue, and lastly producing ideas. Searching for challenges are those that are right in front of us or they may be subtle and need to be tweaked a little. The challenges may not be a challenge at all, “there are no problems or issues at all, only opportunities to improve existing conditions” (Ruggiero, 2009). In expressing the problem or issue it may be necessary to state the issue many different ways. The text states, “different expressions open different avenues of thought” (Ruggiero, 2009). The thought provoking ideas behind this statement allow different individuals to think about a wide array of solutions for a single problem. The more ideas generated the easier it is to solve, potentially. The third stage is investigating the problem of issue. It is pertinent for the person attempting...

...Week 1 Assignment: Critical Thinking John Calderara PHL/458 July 16, 2012 Dr Mc Carthy Week1 Assignment: Critical Thinking Describe a situation in which critical and creative thought could have been used for a better outcome. Describe why it is important to think critically and creatively in similar situations. While working on how to streamline maintenance requests, it was decided that the unit should introduce a work-order form that would allow the unit to send their request directly to the field service representative (fsr) to see what maintenance was needed and what parts may be required. Many of the FSRs would receive a higher load of work because the units were accustomed to their work, which often left some hurrying to finish tasks and projects whereas others were working very little. When the form was first released, it was created in a Word document that had to be emailed to the FSR. This was somewhat problematic because the emails were not sent to a central office, some requests would receive a higher priority based on the time of receipt, rather than on urgency as it was originally designed to process. It would have been better if the lead FSR received requests so that he could prioritize the requests. It would have been better to place the form online so that units would have access to it online, and could send their request in without worrying...

...Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essays Joshua T Lemmerman PHL/458 April - 13 - 2015 Matthew Fallesen Critical and Creative Thinking in Society Short Essays A couple months back there was a gentleman by the name of Eric Garner. This man was from New York and got into an altercation with police. Eric Garner was no angel, but he was not complying with the police officers. One of the police was given an order to subdue the gentleman via chokehold. Eric had asthma and the chokehold ultimately ended his life. Now the public is completely appalled and sickened by events like these. We are not police and sometimes we do not understand how hard their job really is. This situation could have had a completely different outcome if the police had actually had a critical and creative thought process before the chokehold order was given. It is hard because the police did not know this man was asthmatic, but they went off instinct and were trying to detain the gentleman from moves they have been taught. The police in this situation did not use critical thinking to their advantage. Instead they trusted the orders that they had been given. This entire situation could have been avoided by simple critical and creative thinking. They did not evaluate the issue in order to form their judgment. There was no evaluation thought at all, just the simple fact that they were given the order to use excessive force and it cost Mr. Garner his life. If the police would have been able to...

...Solve a Problem Paper PHL/456 August 15, 2011 The creative process includes four different steps. I will discuss the four different steps in this paper on how to change a flat tire on the side of the road. These steps includes, Searching for Challenges, Expressing the Problem or Issue, Investigating the Problem or Issue, and Producing Ideas. Each stage has a specific duty in the creative process. The first stage of the creative process is Searching for Challenges. Creativity is where we as people are meeting challenges in and imaginative, original and effective way. As people challenges are often needed to be sought out. These challenges come to use in the forms of obvious issues or problems. For an example you allow your friend to use your car to go back and forth to work. Your saw your friend a few time with someone else in the car and follow and saw she was taking someone else home. The second stage of the creative process would be Expressing the problem or Issue. The purpose of this stage allows you to fine the best expression of the issue or problem that is occurring. In other words the most helpful ideas to help solve the problem or issue that you are experiencing. For example you are traveling and your car has a flat tire. You have a spare but do not know how to change it. What would you do? The third stage of the creative process is Investigating the Problem or Issues. This stage of the creative process allows you to gather the information that...

...Critical Thinking and Society Jason Terry PHL/458 September 3, 2012 Cher Summers Critical Thinking and Society In the business world, we are influenced by the thoughts and actions of those around us. We are often encouraged to change our opinion or views based on the information that we are given at that moment in time. Persuasive speaking has proven to be an effective form of communication. When used properly it can change the way we operate and or manage many of our working environments. In this paper I plan to describe a situation which critical and creative thinking could have been used more effective to produce a better outcome in my personal working environment. The definition of free will, truth and knowledge will give insight to critical thinking. Understanding three specific hindrances, such as resistance to change, stereotyping and conformity, will give you the general understanding of the hindrances and how we can overcome them. Lastly, advertising plays a major part in today’s persuasive thoughts. I will evaluate one specific advertisement to find and explain the reality of the message. Critical and Creative Thoughts In healthcare, we often make hasty decisions without looking at the total impact that it may have on the organization. In early spring of 2010, the Federal government passed a law requiring hospitals to upgrade to electronic medical records. Funding was earmarked for this project and deadlines were set stating that hospitals would...

...PHL 458 Week Three Refining Resolutions PHL/458 University of Phoenix Refining Solutions It is essential to refine ideas and solutions to find the highest quality solution to a problem. The creative thinking process is used to produce ideas but the critical thinking process is used to evaluate and refine ideas and solutions. Applying criticism to ideas and solutions reduces the risk for error and makes good ideas even better (Ruggiero, 2009). In this paper Arguments will be evaluated and revised resulting in a refined and final solution to the problem. Original Issue How do I find more personal time for myself without neglecting my friends and family? Or simply just taking a day to rest, relax or do something fun. Through close observation of my family, friends and myself, I discovered some unhidden feelings of frustration. These feelings originated because of the lack of communication from me to my friends and family. Everyone that I care about are unaware of their demands on my time or how they made me feel when I was deployed and was unable to be there for birthdays, holidays or special occasions. I would get emails and letters in the mail when I was deployed and it was depressing see how much everyone depended on me to keep the family together and plan all the functions. Initial Solutions With the importance of having free time and being able to balance my time with family and friends, I dove into my imagination and brainstormed for solutions. Initial...

...Week 2: Solve a Problem Exercise PHL/458 May 8, 2013 University of Phoenix Challenges sometimes present themselves in ways that require no in depth thought to determine they are present. Often times they will materialize in the shape of an obvious issue or problem. Challenges are not always presented in this way; they may offer a chance to improve a current situation. Thinking creatively is planning for the best and preparing for the worst; to constantly seek out new solutions. Determine the optimum method for stating the problem. You should state every solution from every angle to eliminate the complex from the simpler. Choosing the right solution is the most complicated part of this course, and you may find it more beneficial to determine which solution provides the best outcome after we reviewed more facts and suggestions offered. Ensure to collect and analyze all information to deal with the issue or problem at hand. Appropriate investigative ways incorporate thinking about experiences, obtaining any related information through recently experience, securing interviews with persons knowledgeable on the subject matter. Acquiring any information to help formulate a solution will only benefit you throughout the process. “Every time you address a problem and try to find solutions, stretch your mind a little, reach for thoughts a little more daring than you have entertained before Vincent (2009).” Brainstorming the problem allows you to offer up as many solutions...

...Solve a Problem PHL/458 September 5, 2013 Solve a Problem Challenges are all around us. Sometimes we face easy challenges and other times we face difficult challenges. In order to solve a problem, regardless of its level of difficulty, one must think critically and creatively in order to develop a satisfactory solution. As we try to solve the problems of our daily lives, it is important to examine any and all ideas. From the most mundane to the most radical, it is a healthy activity to express all ideas and do the filtering later. This paper will attempt to discuss and solve a problem I have some personal experience with. “It is one thing to have thinking skills and quite another to use them in everyday situations” (Ruggiero, 2009, p. 112). This situation definitely challenged the thinking skills my team and I had available. I served on active duty in the United States Navy for almost eight years. To say that we were regularly presented with challenges would be a dramatic understatement. It never really seemed to be more challenging then when we were off the coast of Iraq in 2003. I was the manager of all the communications systems aboard the ship. This system played a key role in all ship’s communications but most importantly during this war, our GPS guided-missile waypoints were mission critical. Three hours prior to a missile launch, the mainframe Tomahawk system used to handle this communication stopped functioning properly. It was one in the morning...

...Samuel Moore “Sam” Walton Samuel Moore Walton entered the world in the usual way on March 29, 1918, in the poor, small town of Kingfisher, Oklahoma. Sam’s parents moved the family to Missouri in 1923 where he spent the remainder of his childhood bouncing from one Missouri town to another. Life was not easy for Sam and his family while growing up during the depression, nor did he take the easy way out…ever. He was a natural leader and driven even as a child; anything that Sam was part of, he ending up leading in some fashion. Youngest Eagle Scout, starting quarterback, honor society, class president, officer of his college fraternity, ROTC officer, and the list goes on. Sam was not afraid of hard work and understood the value of the dollar (Bell, 1999.) Sam got his start in retail management right out of college in 1940 with J. C. Penny’s as a management trainee and then with a Ben Franklin variety store franchise that he ran out of a leased building. He quickly grew his franchise to be the number one franchise in a six-state region, making his success look easy. So easy in fact that the owner of the building refused to renew Sam’s lease and wanted to run the store himself. Sam tried to fight his landlord in court but lost. Instead of throwing up his hands in defeat he got busy. Sam Walton purchased another variety store franchise in Bentonville, Arkansas, changed the name of the store to Walton’s 5 & 10 (another Ben Franklin franchise). Twelve years later Wal-Mart was...

...Creativity comes in many forms and fashions to an individual, “being creative means combining knowledge and imagination” (Ruggiero, 2009, p. 98). Creative people can have numerous talents ranging from problem solving to an individual who is creative in the arts. Understanding creativity and where it comes from is rather difficult, as no one truly knows because creativity can come in a variety of ways. In some cases it can come in the form of a mistake or accident, such as the potato chip, corn flake, and microwaves. The application process in creativity is something that researchers are constantly studying and demonstrating in hopes of understanding the process. The creative process is made of four stages, the number seems to differ among some people because some stages list the stages as individuals and some combined. “The first stage searching for challenges or the essence of creativity is meeting challenges in an imaginative, original, and effective way” (Ruggiero, 2009, p. 105). For example on Fort Jackson the organization I work for deals with the storage and maintenance of weapons, and weapons parts. Physical Security is a major concern for the organization. Recently, the boss came to inform me of a Physical Security Inspection in two days. The new facility manager appointed me the new Physical Security Officer. I knew that I would not be able to pass an inspection with only two days on the job. The issue is that there was no program in place. What I did know...

...Running head: SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY PAPER Scientific Discovery Paper On Penicillin Tracey Ann Elledge University of Phoenix, Las Vegas NV Creative Minds and Critical Thinking PHL 458 Cornell Horn, M.A.; M.A. December 01, 2009 Scientific Discovery Paper Penicillin is an antibiotic that destroys bacteria by destroying the cell wall of the microorganism. It does this by inactivating an enzyme necessary for the cross linking of bacterial cell walls. The enzyme is known as the Tran peptidase. It accepts the penicillin as a substrate, it the alkanolates a nucleophilic oxygen of the enzyme, rendering it inactive. Cell wall construction stops and the bacteria soon die. The antibiotic nature of the penicillin so due to the strain lactam ring, on opening the ring strain is relieved this makes penicillin more reactive than ordinary amides. Before penicillin a simple pinprick or tiny cut could have been lethal. There are so many people easily catching infections that would rage out of control. Children died regularly from scarlet fever, from infections of the bones, throat, stomach or, brain. Many of us would not be here today had it not been for the discovery of penicillin. In 1928, Alexander Fleming made a chance discovery from an already discarded, contaminated Petri dish. The mold that had contaminated the experiment turned out to contain powerful antibiotic, penicillin. However, though Fleming was credited with the discovery, it was over a decade...

...Tuning a Duck Call – Graphic Organizer PHL/458 Introduction: This graphic organizer breaks down a problem looked in week #2. I had been having trouble with duck calling and found out that they were out of tune, so I had to go about researching and tuning the calls. This graphic organizer starts with the Original Issue and goes through problem solving methods and ends up with a Final Solution. Key facts: After much research, I was able to come to these final conclusions and instructions by following the creative thinking process for tuning a call. At the end of the day, I was surprised to find out that it is my personal preference and air pressure I put into the call that makes it work. This will help each person learn their own air pressure, and give you the benefit of strengthening your knowledge on how a call works. There are two main parts of the call, the insert and barrel. The barrel is the top of the call. It is usually outfitted with a brass or aluminum band. The insert is the piece that your hand is placed on while blowing the call. It slides into the barrel of the call. Once disassembled, you will notice the tone board has thin white sheets on it, known as reeds. These are the "tongue" of the duck call, and we will further discuss these later on. The reed lies on the tone board where the cork or wedge holds the reed in place. This is referred to as the cork slot. Different people tune calls for different reasons. Some may have a cracked reed, or...

...# 1) Think of a moral or ethical dilemma you have faced where every choice seemed unsatisfactory. What did you ultimately decide and why did you choose that decision? Being a newly certified correctional officer I have learned the “policy and procedure” way of doing things from the academy, but now I am seeing the “hands on” way of doing things from the more seasoned correctional staff. To say the least some of the ways are completely opposite. One of the main dilemmas I have been faced with is “whether or not to give out inmate request forms” to the inmates if they ask for them. This may seem like an open and closed question, but it really isn’t. See according to policy and the inmate handbook, the only way for the inmates to communicate or request anything is through the inmate request form. This includes but is not limited to signing up for classes, chapel services, medical call outs (sick or well), laundry changes or request, etc. This list really goes on! This is where I am happy to give the form out as long as I have them, because I understand that point. However I have several fellow officers who will tell them “I don’t have any request forms!” Even if they have a stack of them sitting within arm’s reach. I believe this is wrong. I feel that though the inmates made poor decision that landed them in my care and custody, they are still human beings, and should be treated as such, therefore if they need a request form they should be given one. # 2) What do you do when...

...Jefry Almonte Mr.Ivers English 4 10/20//2014 Pedal To The Metal The Lamborghini Aventador coupe and the Ferrari 458 Italia are the two top super cars in the world today. The Lamborghini has the edge over the Ferrari with the size and durability, However, The Ferrari is said to be the fastest and the most mobile. The Lamborghini has over 200 more horsepower than the Ferrari. When it comes to the engines The Ferrari has a 4.5 liter engine while the Lamborghini has a 6.5 liter engine. Compared to the 458 Italia the Lamborghini is evidentially faster through description in its engine. When it comes to the fuel they both take premium gasoline. The Ferrari Fuel mileage in the city is 13 miles per gallon. On the highway it only gets 17 miles per gallon (Stephen). If you were to average those numbers the Ferrari would have 14 miles per gallon which is bad considering it has a V8. The Ferrari also has an auto am-7 chip in the Ferrari increases the performance and calculates the correct combinations of air fuel and spark to produce the power (Car and Driver). The Lamborghini gets 11 miles to the gallon in the city. On the highway it gets 17 miles per gallon. If you were to average the city and the highway it would get 13 miles per gallon combined (Automobil). Considering the Lamborghini has a V12, a V12 engine is an engine with 12 cylinders mounted on the crankcase in two banks of six cylinders, usually but not always at a 60° angle to each other, with all 12pistons driving a...
