An evangelist and write named Phoebe Palmer, was a supporter of Christian perfection. She was born into a Methodist family and married a gentleman who was also a Methodist. The doctrine of John Wesley was very interesting to the couple. Of particular interest was Wesley’s doctrine on Christian perfection. After experiencing her own sanctification, Phoebe felt called to teach others about her faith and her belief in Christian perfection. Phoebe held weekly meetings in her home called Tuesday Meetings. These meetings were held “for the Promotion of Holiness” and were a safe place for women to speak publically. Phoebe had “experienced the death of two infants, lost a third” at eleven month and had suffered a serve illness herself. Following …show more content…
As many prominent Methodists began attending the Tuesday Meetings, others began to experience their sanctification as well. It didn’t take very long and the Tuesday Meetings “became broadly evangelical, drawing ministers and laypeople from almost every Protestant denomination.” Phoebe expected both the laywomen and the laymen who attended the meetings “to testify, even publicly, to their faith.” This mandate she created was a “theology that mandated, grounding it in a new understanding of human religious development.” Soon Phoebe began to receive invitations for public speaking and writing. It didn’t take long for “her speaking itineration’s would be national, indeed transatlantic.” Phoebe began indorsing holiness through a publishing program as well. Phoebe was able to promote to other females “that God’s will was to make them happy and useful, and therefore that they, too, should seek holiness.” She believed that entire sanctification was available to “all regenerate Christians who were ready to meet the spiritual requirements of consecrating all to God and believing God’s promises.” She lived out her faith and it was not just theoretical.
