Prompt: Controversial Idea or Term
Fatality
As a young teenager Mortal Combat was my younger brother and I favorite game. Our age difference did not matter, that was our common ground and one of our favorite things to do together. We would go to the local convenience store and cash in a dollar in pennies. Pocket full of pennies we walked the train tracks that led right behind the town arcade. Exited about what was in store, we put all of our pennies on the the train tracks, then like clock work every hour on the hour a train would go by, the train would would crush our pennies. They were no longer pennies, they were arcade tokens. The train driving over the pennies flattened them out and were the exact same size as an arcade token. As a result we now had 100 game tokens, 50 tokens a piece, that meant we each could play up to 50 games, 50 times trying to kill each other and rip each others spine out of the body and sever the head or limbs. That was the final move on mortal combat, it was when a person has won the fight and is wounded or dizzy the finishing move was applied if you know how to do it,it is called fatality. Thinking nothing about it we would brag about how we killed each other and how many times. We never gave it a second thought. My mother always told us not to play that gory game but we did not listen very well. As a result of kids like me that did not listen to their mothers the video game industry has grown to a billion dollar industry world wide. Consequently this multi billion dollar industry gets a significant amount of publicity. Both positive and negative. Nevertheless it is like a constant battle between good and evil. It is like two siblings always trying to out due each other. The controversy has been going on since video gaming was born. To illustrate this matter, it seems like every time I turn on the t.v. Someone is talking about video games. Here are few negative things that I have heard over the years about video gaming. First is the violence associated with video games, second is the addiction of gaming, third is a few positive things I think about gaming. A few years back I turn on the tv and I see a story about a high school shooting. Columbine High School in Colorado. The media named it the Columbine High massacre. 2 teenagers shot and killed 13 people. The focus was on video games. Some so called experts In addition they said that the 2 teenagers showed keen interest in weapons based combat video games. Such as Wolfstein and Doom. They continued to say that some people perceive violence with real life. Next that the people that play violent video games are more likely to be violent, either with their friends, their family and or everyone else, because of desensitization, the lack of emotional response to a negative stimulus. They stated that video games that on the video games you get rewarded for acts of violence, aggression and vengeance. Which is repeated violent acts on video games cause a learning behavior, the more you do it the more you learn and want to do it. Consequently what was said if you play violent games you are most likely to be violent and do a violent act. In addition that we were teaching the wrong moral values, and confusing the players of whats acceptable and what is not. This team continued to blame video games for other violent acts across the United States. I play video games with my son often, he is four years old and full of energy, but the subject of addiction to the gaming counsole is always in my mind. I play with him sometimes for a few hours at a time, he wants to keep on playing but I try to regulate the time that we spend in front of a tv. I try to teach him that video gaming is not suppose to be an all day thing. Spending to much time in front of the gaming system sometimes can distract you from doing other things that you where suppose to get done that day, for example this paper is due but don't get it done because your lost track of time playing video games. Too much of something is never healthy, addiction is one of the worst things people can do to their mind or body, because they have very little or no control at all, of their body and mind. On the other hand I have always heard many positive things about gaming, that violent games channel violent emotions an a positive way, that if you play violent games you are less likely to show aggressive behavior in real life. Violent games games are helping keep the crime rate down, by keeping the real world killings in our imaginations as harmless fantasies, another thing is that video games are helping keep crime at a all time low. Some things that I noticed that are positive in playing these video games, are quick thinking, hand and eye coordination, accuracy, concentration, for example when a bad guy just comes out form no where and you have to quickly react and shot punch etc. Also mapping and memory skills pattern recognitions, for example when you go into a building in your game, you are going to have to remember how to get out the same way you came from. Few other ones that I think are extremely helpful in life are reasonable judgements, taking risks, how to respond to challenges, rethinking some goals, and problem solving. Etc. There are many more. Violence in video games will always continue to be a controversial subject, therefore it always be a subject of debate. There will always be a fight between right and wrong, good and evil., therefore you have to chose, the debate has been going on since video games were born and there are no signs of stopping yet. Me playing video games with my son frequently, I have to be the judge, I have to chose the right and the wrong, the great thing about our human ability is that we can chose between fiction and reality. Playing video games brought me and my brother together and a lot of great memories with video games. Instead of completely stopping the games just monitor I am just going to monitor what games we play, appropriate age rating of course. Like everything in life you have to study it for yourself and discover the pros and cons about the controversial subject, then maybe you can make the judment for yourself and how it is going to affect you and your family, today, tomorrow or few years down the future. Ultimately you might see a common ground on both sides, never know.

Mobile Phone

...mobile phone (also known as a wireless phone, cell phone, or cellular telephone[1]) is a very small portable radio telephone. The mobile phone can be used to communicate over long distances without wires. It works by communicating with a nearby base station (also called a "cell site") which connects it to the main phone network. As the mobile phone moves around, if the mobile phone gets too far away from the cell it is connected to, that cell sends a message to another cell to tell the new cell to take over the call. This is called a "hand off," and the call continues with the new cell the phone is connected to. The hand-off is done so well and carefully that the user will usually never even know that the call was transferred to another cell. As mobile phones became more popular, they began to cost less money, and more people could afford them. Monthly plans became available for rates as low as US$30 or US$40 a month. Cell phones have become so cheap to own that they have mostly replaced pay phones and phone booths except for urban areas with many people. In recent days, more and more mobile phones are considered as "smartphones". As well as making voice calls, they can be used as computers. History Mobile phones in the 1950s through 1970s were large and heavy, and most were built into cars. In the late 20th century technology improved so people could carry their phones easily. Although Dr. Martin Cooper from Motorola made the first call using a mobile phone in 1973...

...mobile phone use in staff and team meetings. A staff survey on attitudes towards the use of mobile phones in the staff / team meetings was conducted. The results indicate that the majority of staff find mobile phone use a major issue in staff meetings. The report concludes that personal mobile phones are disruptive and should be turned off in meetings. It is recommended that UniLab develops a company policy banning the use of mobile phones except in exceptional circumstances. Introduction There has been a massive increase in the use of personal mobile phones over the past five years and there is every indication that this will continue. According to Black (2002) by 2008 almost 100% of working people in Australia will carry personal mobile phones. Black describes this phenomenon as ‘serious in the extreme, potentially undermining the foundations of communication in our society’ (2002, p 167). Currently at UniLab 89% of staff have personal mobile phones. Recently a number of staff have complained about the use of personal mobile phones in meetings and asked what the official company policy is. At present there is no official company policy regarding phone use. This report examines the issue of mobile phone usage in staff meetings and small team meetings. It does not seek to examine the use of mobile phones in the workplace at other times, although some concerns were raised. For the purposes of this report a personal mobile phone is a personally...

...CELL PHONES AND SOCIALIZATION Shawn Powell Strayer University ABSTRACT Cellular phones have come a long way from the exclusive use for important people. Now, the use of cell phones has gone global. People across the global can be seen using cell phones in many ways that fit their life style. This wireless device is used by both the young and the old. The use is a combination of fashion, work and social outlet. Socialization has linked its existence to the invention of the cell phone. CELL PHONES AND SOCIALIZATION The world as we know it has become technology depended on a hand held device called the cellular phone. Martin Cooper was the person who invented the first handheld cellular device in April, 1973. Ever since, the cellular device now commonly known as a cell phone has taken off to a level no one knew it could reach. Today, cell phones have grown to be a new way of everyday life. Additionally, cell phone usage has fallen into the number one category on the charts in the area of mobile communication and/or social interaction as it has multiple uses such as text messaging and surfing the internet. Cell phone conversations take place in public places causing people to interact whether it is for business or pleasure therefore maintaining the balance of social support (Khattab, 2009). However, questions have also been raised as to whether it is proper behavior depending on where a cell phone is being used (Khattab, 2009). Not only are people highly depended on...

...Ariana Galindo Mrs. Sgarioto English 1100-400 9 December 2009 The Invisible Killer What if one were to tell you that your cell phone is slowly killing you every time you use it? Cell phones are a part of everyday life for many people across the world. To many their cell phone is considered the most important item they own. People use cell phones everyday for simple tasks. One example is going to the grocery store, when a person forgets what they were supposed to get for mom they simply call her and ask. Imagine thirty years ago? People could never do something like that. Society today relies a great deal on cell phones and their features, but do not realize the potential danger they are putting their health in. Many people around the world use cell phones every day but are unaware of the fatal outcomes linked to them. To understand how potentially harmful cell phones are society must consider the many people using them. There are three billion cell phone users worldwide and more than 260 million in the United States alone (Mead 422). It is shocking that so many people around the world and U.S are cell phone users and they all may not know how harmful cell phones can be. It is important to discover how this technology of cell phones was created and developed in order to look into how it is affecting humans. In 1974, in response to growing demand for a communication system that was more convenient than two- way radios, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allocated...

Cell Phones in It

...Cell Phones Technology in the country and around the world is expanding at an exponential pace. The last 10-15 years has seen a large increase for technology in everyday life. In the United States the biggest technological change is the use of cell phones in our lives for both personal and business use. Since the late 90’s cell phones have grown at a tremendous pace. Today there are very few people in the country that do not have one. Personal use of needing a cell phone has increased. Today we need to always have access to our phone for text messages, email or the old but common actual phone call. Before cell phones if you wanted to know where someone was you had to call a land line phone at their house or actually go to where they lived or worked, and this would take a lot of time out of your day either waiting or actually trying to track someone down. If you only needed to tell your spouse something simple like “pick up some milk.” Today people can just send a text message with that information and it is something you receive instantly. This has increased our connection with each other for personal use since we can talk or communicate with someone when and where we want. Cell phones in the business world have evolved even greater than personal use possibly over the same time period. When someone used to work before phones they could only receive calls or email while they were in the office. That could be a good thing, but if something needed to be done urgently or information...

Cell Phones

...Cell phones have been around for quite a few years now. The cell phone came out back in 1983. The first design that came out was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X (2009). Since then we have seen the cell phone evolve from a huge block to what we have today. One of the major problems with cell phones is cell phone waste. When a new phone comes out or we break our phones we usually just throw them away. This causes a lot of waste in the dumps. There is a cell phone though in the works that I feel will help shape the way we build cell phones and other devices, if it can ever get off the drawing board. Every day we throw away millions of cell phone. The reason we throw them away is because they are out of date or they are broken. The problem with the broken cell phones is that usually it is one piece that is broken that is near impossible to fix. So when the average person finds out just how much it is to fix the phone they usually just buy a new one. That’s where Dave Hakkens comes in. Dave’s idea is simple in theory. Build a phone made up of several exchangeable blocks that connect to the base (the middle of the phone) and the base connects everything together.( Mcnicoll & Article, 2013) The blocks have two pins on one side that allows them to be connected to the base. All this is held together by two screws at the bottom of the phone. By doing this you can extend the life of the cell phone by upgrading the specific block on the phone you want. For example let’s say...

...Mobile Phones As everybody knows, mobile phones have become an essecial tool, which plays a big and important role in our daily lives. Nowadays, there is no doubt that everybody has one of them. But why are they such popular? Are they useful? To start with, humans were meant to be sociable and talk to each other, we need to get in touch with other people, so that’s probably why it is convenient for us to have mobile phones, because we can call other people who are even in another country at any time! Moreover, they are portable, so we can carry them everywhere. In addition, they enable us to do emergency calls. For example, imagine that you have suffered a car accident and there’s nobody on the road or if you see a crime taking place…, it’s very helpful to do an emergency call in these cases. Police can locate kidnappers using the victim’s mobile phones’ networks! Furthermore, you can do many things with them. For instance, you can listen to music, make photos, share documents, surf the Net and so on. Nevertheless, there isn’t any evidence to prove they are safe to use and they are believed to give out radioactive waves and scientists believe the radioactivity can cause health issues such as brain tumor or damage our ears. Apart from that, people become addicted to them. People tend to talk to other people through the mobile phone instead of talking to the people they are with in that moment and there’s no doubt this affect students, because they use them during lessons...

As silly as this sound, most cases of smartphone data theft begins with a lost or stolen phone. The first line of defense is common sense. Don't put your phone down in a public place, and don't leave it where it is easily grabbed. In short, treat your phone as you would your wallet. In case your phone does get snatched by a passing evildoer, the next step is to make sure that you have a secure screen lock. For Blackberry, iOS and Windows phones use a secure password. Something that's easily remembered, but not easily guessed. If it includes personal information such as your name, birthday or address it is not safe. For Android users, make sure that your unlock pattern is relatively complex and crosses over itself. If not, somebody can deduce your pattern from the repeated smudge marks on your...

...attached to our phones. We would hardly communicate with each other, because we were so consumed in our phones. Being in a generation that has grown up on technology I get excited not frustrated with advances in technology. Older generations cannot seem to understand why “those young kids are attached to those things”. I honestly don’t know much different. I have always had a colored T.V a VCR, a CD player and a computer. Sure all of those have morphed into newer and better things, but I don’t know much else but technology. I think that even though I have always had technology around as I have gotten a little bit older I have become more aware of the damages it can do to our society. The video assigned to watch says it all. People can’t even go to the bathroom without using their phones! I loved the video, because although a couple of them were a little extreme, most of them I am guilty of! Because of my Iphone craze, I talked both my parents into upgrading there “bricks” into iphone. I have noticed that when we go out to dinner all three of us are on our phones until our food arrives. We do not talk as much as we used to because of the phones. It actually saddens me. As far as friends go, I have realized that I get really annoyed at one of my friends that is constantly on her phone.
