When something is reproduced for so many times is that art? What’s the importance of the mechanical reproducible of the art? What was the impact on mechanical reproducibility on the society?
In my personal opinion art is more than just the final image, it’s the intangible qualities that make it something special, as William Benjamin said “ Even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element: its presence in time and space, its unique existence at the place where it happens to be”. We are able to look at reproductions and admire the great beauty of the original work of art, however it is not the same as standing in front of the original. You may be able to copy the lines of a painting but you can not reproduce the artist emotions that went into their piece
Although a reproduction can not fully compare to an original piece of work there is much value behind this skill, the ability to have a piece of work exposed all over the world. Being able to share art on a global scale not only allows us to experience different cultures but also have work appreciated worldwide. However there is also a darker side to reproducing, it has created a whole underground market place or illegal counterfeiting, where not only is this wrong on a morel level but also can be extremely dangerous not only to the people involved in the market, as much counterfeiting is done by organized crime, but can potentially be dangerous to the customers. With counterfeit goods there is no safety regulation so you as the customer has no idea what has been used to create your product; for example toxic chemicals being used as finishes on anything from artwork to clothing products. Reproductions can be culturally enhancing as well as a dangerous endeavor
Is photography art, or contribution to the art? Is it just a tool used by artists?
As a paintbrush and canvas is to a painter is a camera to a photographer each elements on their own are just one piece to a puzzle its only once the artist picks up a brush that he is able to create his masterpiece, likewise with a photographer and his camera. Each part is indispensable and the final product would be unable to material without the relationship the artist has with his medium. To question the value of photography verse any other art form is a subjective, one of my favorite photographer David Lachapelle in my eyes is a phenomenal artist, from his elaborate sets, to interesting thought provoking concepts. Regardless of if you agree or disagree one thing is clear that anybody who is pushing limits, trying new things, being creative are contributing to the landscape that is art How and why Henry Peach Robinson created Fading Away? What was the reason?
Henry Peach Robinson “Fading Away” was created in 1858 by assembling five negatives into one piece. The theme of the piece is the death of a young girl and her grieving family. Robinson was a pioneer in photography, what he did was something that had never been seen with photography at the time. He paved the way for photography to be accepted and looked at as more of a creative art form then simply just the act of capturing a small part of life, he was in fact telling a story (fictional) in photo.
Photography has impacted the world of art and influenced some changes in the area of accessibility to art. If mechanical reproduction created revolution, what is happening now with the digitalization?
Just as mechanical reproduction created a revolution so is digitalization. In the age of digital not only is the speed at witch we can produce images the fastest it has ever been, we are able to manipulate images in a way we have never been able to before. One of the largest impacts digitalization creates is the ability to share images at a speed of light rate, we use to rely solely on news reports to find out what world events were taking place, now with cell phones and the internet we can watch events unfold in real time. This is a huge change and sift in our society with the reproductions this can have, some may see it as “giving power to the people”. The events of 2010 G20 summit in Toronto come to mind, individuals there were able to document and share (in real time) the experiences of being in the action. What are possibly much more powerful is the in many cases where there is a disputes on if individual rights were being violated or allegations of police were using brutal force there is video evidence of the actual events. We are in a time much different than much of past history, we have the ability to share on a global level with one click of the mouse, as a society we have to respect this ability and understand the impact it has.

...` Carrie Mae Weems By: Elijah Hutchinson Period: 1 My photography work has been inspired in many ways. It will also inspire me in other ways in the future. There are many things I want to learn how to do with my photography work. I want to learn how to take pictures by explaining what's going on in my picture, also I want to investigate family relationships by looking at a photo and realizing what the family is going through, also learn how to use digital technology. By learning this type of material and structure of art work it will have an influence on me in the future. To become a better photographer I began looking at pictures in the book and looking at the detailed work that is in the photograph or in magazines and going to exhibitions of pictures, and also going to places that show photographs. In the future dealing with photography work I want to tell a story through my pictures. I feel that when I learn how does storytelling help more people understand and see where I'm coming from with my work. I think storytelling will be a fundamental way of me expressing the human condition. Later on in life when I start to do storytelling I don't want to hide the problems that my family have because I want the people to understand through my pictures how my family is. Through my photographs the facials expresses the emotions that is occurring while the photo is taken. This can either be expressed by my family smiling or if they look angry and don’t look excited...

...Photography Photography is undoubtedly one of the most important inventions in history -- it has truly transformed how people conceive of the world. Now we can "see" all sorts of things that are actually many miles -- and years -- away from us. Photography lets us capture moments in time and preserve them for years to come Today, photography is characterized by a rapid growth in the development of technology and ideas. Each year, millions of pictures are taken and an astonishing array of new films, cameras and imaging systems enter the market. One of the great attractions of the photography field is the ease with which basic skills can be learned. The word ‘photography’ comes from the Greek term ‘drawing with light’. Without light there is no photograph. Photography is about seeing, balancing and interpreting the light. Composition of Photography The Camera: The materials that are usually used in creating a camera are metal, glass, plastic, wood, and mirrors. The Film: Collodion: This substance transformed photography. This a viscous mixture of gun cotton that is dissolved in alcohol that then creates a thin film. It is then mixed with silver bromide, silver iodide or silver chloride. This substance reduced exposure time to seconds instead of hours. Film: The first type of camera film was produced when the collodion was combined with celluloid, a flexible plastic. This film started to be sold with “Kodak” in 1889 along with the worlds first box camera. Chemicals...

The word photography derives from the Greek φωτός (phōtos), genitive of φῶς (phōs), "light" and γραφή (graphé) "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", together meaning "drawing with light". ...CHAPTER ONE CAMERA OBSCURA A camera obscura was one of the most important devices ever created in the world of photography. It is an optical device that led to the camera. A camera obscura consists of a box or room with a hole in one side. Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside, where it is reproduced, rotated 180 degrees upside-down, but with color and perspective contained. The image can be projected onto paper, and can then be traced to produce a highly accurate representation. Did you know he largest camera obscura in the world is on Constitution Hill in Aberystwyth, Wales? The first surviving mention of some of the principles behind the pinhole camera or camera obscura belongs to Mozi who lived 470 to 390 BCE. Mozi was a Chinese philosopher and the founder of Mohism. He correctly asserted that the image in a camera obscura is flipped upside down because light travels in straight lines from its source. His disciples developed this into a minor theory of optics. The Greek philosopher Aristotle lived from 384 to 322 BCE, understood the optical principle of the pinhole camera. Aristotle viewed the crescent shape of a partially eclipsed sun projected on the ground through the holes in a sieve and through the gaps between the leaves of a plane tree. In the 4th century, Greek scholar Theon of Alexandria observed that "candlelight passing through a pinhole will create an illuminated spot on a screen that is directly in line...

...To me, photography is a way to capture a moment in time. Fancy equipment is not necessary to take wonderful images. Learning to see like the camera sees and knowing your internal vision are much more important than expensive equipment to photography. Most important is that you have the desire to take great images and be willing to learn. My name is Mahmood. I’m Bahraini and I was born in 1992. I started my first photography experience when I was twelve or thirteen years old using my friend’s camera and my first photo was my nephew’s portrait. My first camera that I bought with the own money was Nikon D40. Somehow photography became the joy of my life. Photography is fantasy that I can never have enough of it. I am so touched by photography that I started learning it using you tube and internet site. In other words, I am self-taught. Photography is my calling and hopefully one day would be my profession, and the thing that will undoubtedly drive me insane someday. I don’t photograph subjects. I photograph the way they make me feel. Admittedly, it’s a bit of a strange concept. But it’s honest – and it’s the best way to describe my approach to the craft. I wrestle with every image I shoot. I assume perfection is possible and I want to squeeze it out of every picture. If that’s all you ever know about me, it’s enough to say you know me very, very well. Though, currently I am studying interior design, I am always thinking about photography. As I grow older, my personal taste is...

The Coin of Photography

...Flipping The Coin of Photography Before, I tell you about what I am going to write, first and foremost I would like you all to imagine two situations. The first is suppose you enter an old palace, what do you expect to find. Well, you are sure to have a glimpse of numerous paintings hung on the gorgeous walls depicting portraits of glorious emperors and his beautiful wives, or certain scenes of importance being depicted on the walls. Any genuine person would call the palace and its adored paintings, a work of art and rather be mesmerised by the antiquity. Now, the second situation is somewhat we all are acquainted with. What do you expect to find as you enter the house of a popular film star. Well you are luckily you are going to see numerous photographs of stars being framed and hung on the wall. You can also find a good deal of landscape photographs in any modern household. Well, now the question arises. Will you call this house a patron of art? This is where the ambiguity arises. It has been almost 180 years now, and still innumerable critics have been raging a battle among themselves on whether to consider photography as an art. Well, I am no critic, neither I am any artist or photographer. I am what you all are, a layman. And I will try to analyse things from layman’s point of view. So, being impartial, standing on the vulnerable bisector dividing the two forms, I would like to establish art with photography. How do we describe art? Art is a form of media be it painting...

It also allows those that are working the scene to get a better understanding of what happened. When working a crime scene you have to preserve the evidence. Photography as Art

...“Is photography art?” may appear to be a seemingly irrelevant question today. In our culture we are not only surrounded by media and marketing images for consumers. Camera images also function as decoration, provide spiritual enrichment, and give us insight into the past and present. In the years following the discovery of photography, however, this medium was criticized and critiqued while trying to be recognized as a form of artistic expression in a period dominated by painting. Similar to painters, photographers can approach their photographs in a variety of ways, transforming them from mere “careless snapshots” into beautiful, original pieces of work. The Seven Last Words, by F. Holland day is considered one of the most important images in the history of photography. This piece contains iconic religious and spiritual importance which influenced subsequent artists significantly. The monumental self-portrait depicts Day as Christ in a series of seven platinum prints set in a frame designed by the artist. In order to prepare for his self-portraits Day starved himself, grew out his beard, and imported cloth and a cross from Syria. It is without question that Day’s depiction of Christ is unsettling and full of emotion as he portrays Jesus speaking out his last words. His images are soft and painterly-like, blurring the visible line between painting and photography. Many individuals may have difficulty distinguishing the two. His dramatic use of lighting can also be compared...

History of Photography

...The Future of Photography Over the last 150 or so years that photography has been in our lives, it didn’t undergo much change until twenty years ago. While film sizes and developing techniques had minor changes, it wasn’t until the 80′s when the first glimmer of the future of photography started to appear with auto-focus camera’s and faster frames per seconds. Then digital came and has forever changed our lives. I do see many changes in the future, some may come to be, and some may be just too far-fetched, however, anything is possible. I see in camera HDR, unlimited ISO, simulated grain, 3g equipped cameras, GPS equipped cameras, and Polaroid film comes back to life, universal batteries, even, the everything lens. High dynamic range photography has been more of a curse then a blessing as most photographers see it. Most over-use the ability and create more art images compared with a true photography, layering and layering until what they have more closely resembles a digitally created image, not a photograph. If a camera can have the ability to do HDR on the fly, in camera it could open up the door for better, more equally exposed images. High end DSLRs now seem to be able to shoot in near total darkness, however the blacks still tend to go green in hue. Working towards better chips that don’t get as hot will lead to better night images without flash. Grain is not a bad thing! 25 years ago photographers chose film based on the grain type, fine, coarse, etc., and the...
