Standard Exercise The Intense Speakers 1) For this system, in the vertical configuration, y0 = 5 cm gives the equilibrium position. False True Submit Hide Solution Standard Exercise The Speeding Car Standard Exercise Heating a Metal Strip Solution: This question asks about the effect of gravity on the equilibrium position of a spring. Remember that the effect of a gravitational force is to stretch the spring an amount Δx = mg/k. This stretch in the spring represents an offset in the natural (horizontal) equilibrium position of the spring. While the question is strangely worded, the answer is true, the change in position y0 = 5 cm represents the new equilibrium position. Standard Exercise Compressing...

...Absorption Spectra of Conjugated Dyes Abstract: The absorption spectra of a series of three diphenyl dyes and three polymethine dyes were measured and interpreted by ultra-violet spectroscopy. The spectrums of these dyes were compared to the estimated wavelength of absorbance through the particle-in-a-box model. Maximum wavelengths of 523, 604, 707, 330, 354 and 375 and box lengths of 1.053, 1.284, 1.535, 0.707, 0.867, and 1.011 nm, for 1,1’-diethyl-2,2’-cyanine iodide, 1,1’-diethyl-2,2’-carbocyanine chloride, 1,1’-diethyl-2,2’-dicarbocyanine iodide, 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene, 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene, and 1,8-diphenyl-1,3,5,7-octatetraene were experimental obtained. Both spectral and physical measurements proved Kuhn’s free-electron model is most accurate for 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene, 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene, and 1,8-diphenyl-1,3,5,7-octatetraene, but an adjustment with an empirical parameter α to 1.2 was required for more reliable predictions of 1,1’-diethyl-2,2’-cyanine iodide, 1,1’-diethyl-2,2’-carbocyanine chloride, and 1,1’-diethyl-2,2’-dicarbocyanine iodide. The more polarizable end group compounds like the polymethine dyes retained higher wavelengths of absorption. Introduction: Determination of the box length in the one-dimensional particle-in-a-box model can be found through the absorption spectra of polymethine dyes. The length of the box is more easily visible in a new series of diphenyl dyes, which are less hazardous, as well as less expensive...

However, in networks where objects can simultaneously belong to multiple modules at once, the decomposition of a network into overlapping communities remains a challenge. Here we present a new paradigm for uncovering the modular structure of complex networks, based on a decomposition of a network into any combination of overlapping, nonoverlapping, and hierarchically organized communities...

...Chaotic Growth with the Logistic Model of P.-F. Verhulst Hugo Pastijn Department of Mathematics, Royal Military Academy B-1000 Brussels, Belgium Hugo.Pastijn@rma.ac.be Summary. Pierre-Fran¸ois Verhulst was born 200 years ago. After a short biograc phy of P.-F. Verhulst in which the link with the Royal Military Academy in Brussels is emphasized, the early history of the so-called “Logistic Model” is described. The relationship with older growth models is discussed, and the motivation of Verhulst to introduce different kinds of limited growth models is presented. The (re-)discovery of the chaotic behaviour of the discrete version of this logistic model in the late previous century is reminded. We conclude by referring to some generalizations of the logistic model, which were used to describe growth and diffusion processes in the context of technological innovation, and for which the author studied the chaotic behaviour by means of a series of computer experiments, performed in the eighties of last century by means of the then emerging “micro-computer” technology. 1 P.-F. Verhulst and the Royal Military Academy in Brussels In the year 1844, at the age of 40, when Pierre-Fran¸ois Verhulst on November c 30 presented his contribution to the “M´moires de l’Acad´mie” of the young e e Belgian nation, a paper which was published the next year in “tome XVIII” with the title: “Recherches math´matiques sur la loi d’accroissement de la e population” (mathematical investigations of the law of...

...Evolutionary Anthropology 21:50–57 (2012) ISSUES The Science Behind Pre-Columbian Evidence of Syphilis in Europe: Research by Documentary GEORGE J. ARMELAGOS, MOLLY K. ZUCKERMAN, AND KRISTIN N. HARPER This article discusses the presentation of scientific findings by documentary, without the process of peer review. We use, as an example, PBS’s ‘‘The Syphilis Enigma,’’ in which researchers presented novel evidence concerning the origin of syphilis that had never been reviewed by other scientists. These ‘‘findings’’ then entered the world of peer-reviewed literature through citations of the documentary itself or material associated with it. Here, we demonstrate that the case for pre-Columbian syphilis in Europe that was made in the documentary does not withstand scientific scrutiny. We also situate this example from paleopathology within a larger trend of ‘‘science by documentary’’ or ‘‘science by press conference,’’ in which researchers seek to bypass the peer review process by presenting unvetted findings directly to the public. George J. Armelagos is Goodrich C. White Professor of Anthropology at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. His research has focused on diet and disease in prehistory. He was the Viking Medal Medalist (Wenner-Gren Foundation) in 2005, received The Franz Boas Award for Exemplary Service to Anthropology from the American Anthropological Association in 2008, and The Charles Darwin Award for Lifetime Achievement to Biological Anthropology...

This is reflected by the tremendous activity in the public and private sector to better understand the myriad of cyber challenges, identifying existing gaps and needs and closing these gaps as quickly and firmly as possible through government policy initiatives, public/private partnerships, and legal/insurance penalty and incentive regimes. However when we examine the academic literature, the research and publications in this area are rather sparse. Consequently, this special issue on Security in the Cyber Supply Chain is intended to act as a resource to practitioners and as a call to research. & 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Introduction In general, the cyber supply chain provides tremendous advances in efficiency and effectiveness. The economy gains through transactions being more efficient through the low cost rapid transmission of information related to supply chain management. Not only does this rapid transmission reduce cost, but it also provides value through increased effectiveness allowing for services and decisions that were not possible...

...aberidoost et al. DARU Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences 2013, 21:69 http://www.darujps.com/content/21/1/69 REVIEW ARTICLE Open Access Pharmaceutical supply chain risks: a systematic review Mona Jaberidoost1, Shekoufeh Nikfar1, Akbar Abdollahiasl1,2 and Rassoul Dinarvand1,3* Abstract Introduction: Supply of medicine as a strategic product in any health system is a top priority. Pharmaceutical companies, a major player of the drug supply chain, are subject to many risks. These risks disrupt the supply of medicine in many ways such as their quantity and quality and their delivery to the right place and customers and at the right time. Therefore risk identification in the supply process of pharmaceutical companies and mitigate them is highly recommended. Objective: In this study it is attempted to investigate pharmaceutical supply chain risks with perspective of manufacturing companies. Methods: Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science bibliographic databases and Google scholar scientific search engines were searched for pharmaceutical supply chain risk management studies with 6 different groups of keywords. All results found by keywords were reviewed and none-relevant articles were excluded by outcome of interests and researcher boundaries of study within 4 steps and through a systematic method. Results: Nine articles were included in the systematic review and totally 50 main risks based on study outcome of interest extracted which classified in 7 categories. Most of reported...
