Physical education equipment in Calhan, Colorado.
Physical education, Phy. Ed., or PE, also known in many Commonwealth countries as physical training or PT,[1] is an educational course related to the physique of the human body. It is taken during primary and secondary education and encourages psychomotor learning in a play or movement exploration setting to promote health.[2]
Asia[edit]
In South Korea, it is mandatory for pupils to take a total of 3 hours of physical education through primary and secondary level schools[citation needed]
In Singapore, pupils from primary school through junior colleges are required to have 2 hours of PE every week, except during examination seasons. Pupils are able to play games like football, badminton, captain ball, and basketball during most sessions. Unorthodox sports such as touchball, fencing, and skateboarding are occasionally played. In more prestigious secondary schools and in junior colleges, sports such as golf, tennis, shooting, and squash are played. A compulsory fitness exam, NAPFA, is conducted in every school once every year to assess the physical fitness of the pupils.[citation needed] Pupils are given a series of fitness tests (Pull-ups/Inclined pull-ups for girls, standing broad jump, sit-ups, sit-and-reach and 1.6 km for primary [10- to 12-year-olds]/2.4 km for secondary and junior college levels [13- to 18-year-olds]). Students are graded by gold, silver, bronze or fail. NAPFA for pre-enlistees serves as an indicator for an additional 2 months in the country's compulsory national service if they attain bronze or fail.
In Malaysia, pupils from primary schools to secondary schools are expected to do 2 periods or 1 hour of PE throughout the year except a week before examination. In most secondary schools, games like badminton, sepak takraw, football, netball, basketball and tennis are

...killer! It is true that genetics and stress play a role in obesity, but exercising is something anyone can do at any fitness level. If a student is not already involved in any type of sports or recreational activities that promote physical fitness, school may be their only place to have exercise. If obesity can be a “killer”, then schools can save lives by keeping physical education a part of the learning experience in school. Schools should require physical education every year at every school. Some people do not want to participate in physical fitness because they are worried about receiving injuries. They even say the risk of injury is far greater in a physical fitness class then in an academic class. But by not being physically active, people are much more likely to have injuries. Stretching before physical activity is very important and is taught during a Physical Education class. If a student is not required to take a gym class, they would not have the opportunity of knowing the importance of stretching before exercising, and this could lead to injury. Physical education is an education, but it would be like giving my great grandmother an I-phone….It’s useless if she doesn’t know how to use it! Another reason to keep physical education in schools is there is a strong link between exercise and academic performance....

...Creation of a personal fitness – training program Dehara Minori Goal The second unit of Physical Education this year was to create a personal fitness-training program. We were asked to make an attainable goal using the F.I.T.T where, “F” stands for Frequency, “I” stands for Intensity, “T” stands for Time, and lastly another “T” stands for Type. My overall goal based on the F.I.T.T is firstly I would like to be more flexible through whole of my body; secondly I would like to train my inner core muscles by doing core training. (Include push – ups) Description of my fitness program The benefits of flexibility trainings reduce risk of injury, improved posture, greater freedom of movement, reduced muscle tension and soreness, and physical and mental relaxation. In our age, our flexibility can start to decrease, especially if we are inactive. So, I will be doing a slow and controlled movement such as reaching down the floor, lift the leg to touch the hand, to stretch my body well (especially, Latissimus, Biceps, Abdominal muscles, Quadriceps, Hamstrings, Gastrocnemius, Soleus and other muscles) daily after taking shower at night for about 10 minutes, also using my ballet class as well. I will be working or going to be intence for about 75% of my heart rate. (Beat) I will do the training what is called “core training” which has been an essential part of the training for every gymnast, ballet dancers as well since the beginnings of time. Importance of Physical Education in Elementary Schools

...Importance of Physical Education in Elementary Schools Importance of Physical Education in Elementary Schools Chris Williams ECE 315 Terri Malone June 6, 2011 Importance of Physical Education in Elementary School Physical education is sometimes viewed as merely a chance for students to have fun, get the wiggles out. The fact is physical education is so much more important to the health and well being of all children. A strong physical education program can strongly promote students to be active and healthy through out their life time. Having an adequate physical education program can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, increase a child self esteem, prevent childhood obesity, and increase test scores in children. Regular physical activity is associated with a healthier longer life and with a lower risk of heart disease. “Current recommendations are for children to engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day (www.everdaychoices.org)”. Children spend over half of their day at school, so it’s reasonable to require that they should get at least 30 minutes of that time at school. Heart disease is a growing epidemic among Americans. Laying down a foundation that encourages children to get physical helps reduce the risk of them developing this disease later in life. In a systematic review of physical education programs over a six month time frame showed that exercise program...

Cutbacks in Physical and Arts Education

...Palmer Cutbacks in Music, Art and Physical Education School is where we all gain basic knowledge. It is where we learn what we need to live and then get interested in what we will excel at later in life. Many students want to grow up to be a lawyer, doctor or a teacher but for some students, it is the dream of being a famous musician, artist or athlete. With education budget cuts and the motion for higher standardized test scores on the raise, many schools have been forced to cut some of their programs. Those hardest hit are music, art and physical education classes. The issue is that cutting these programs may do more harm to students than good. Studies have shown that music, art and physical activity have many positive effects on student development and learning. Physical education has become especially important today. With childhood obesity become an increasing problem, physical health and proper nutrition has become a great concern. Music and art also have also shown to have an impact on physical development. These are the classes and programs that promote creativity, self-expression and individuality, and for many students are the classes that they look the most forward to and are often the highlight of their day. By taking them away are we not robbing our students of the opportunity to learn through different mediums? What about the future musicians, artists and athletes? Are we not robbing...

Physical Education Teacher

...Physical Education Teacher “As the time came, I started to ponder. What could I possibly do five days a week, year-round, and not get bored with it.” As her hands were flipping she said, “My brain was rushing with thoughts and ideas.” It then hit me, choose something you love doing. Be something you’re good at and perfect it. Never slack. At this moment what I love doing most is playing sports and working out. With that being said, what better job than a physical education teacher? Five days a week, weekends off, holidays off, and two entire months off, what a better job?” Looking like a skeleton, I can see where she’s going with this. She was a sophisticated looking woman, with dark skin, but not gloomy. As she talked about her job her eyes lit up like stars in the sky. It was obvious she loved her job, and wouldn’t choose be anywhere else. The students moved on to new activities or sports every other week. The students were respectful, and disciplined very well. They were also cooperative and seemed to love the activities they had to participate in. Some activities included: basketball, soccer, hockey, badminton, table tennis (ping pong), and other teamwork involving activities. She taught all of the students how to use teamwork, and inspired many people to engage in sports. Some people who never even thought about playing sports before, played soccer because she opened up her own soccer team. She was the teacher of the year. This interested me even more. Maybe I could...

Why Physical Education Should Not Be Mandatory in College

...oneself in shape, as well as the point that why should a student be made to take a class when he is paying a lot of money out of his or her own pocket for their tuition? He or she should be given their own choice when it comes to taking a physical education course of any kind. While the opportunity to take the class should remain, the choice to make such a class mandatory is imprudent and arbitrary, at best. If someone wishes to get themselves in shape, they can find the time to go to a gym, or find the time to run a track. As busy as a student’s life is, it is not so busy that some time cannot be put aside for their own health and physical well being. In fact, this should be one of a student’s most important priorities, and should not be difficult to pencil into a schedule. There are many ways outside of class that a student can get exercise. They could walk, run, swim, work out, play any variety of sports; the list can be unending. In short, activity can be done so it is both healthy and something a student wants to do. So why implement it as a mandatory activity that some students would not want to participate in? Some may feel that they already get enough exercise as it is: there would be no need to participate in a physical education class as they already have put in their work off school hours. College is extraordinarily expensive. As the number of college applicants applying to universities across the country continues to skyrocket, as does the tuition costs associated...

Reasoning for Keeping Physical Education in the Curriculum

...the letter you sent out about abolishing Physical Education from your school’s curriculum. I wish to express my reasoning and justifications for Physical Education to be included. My main issue is with your statement that PE should be abolished because it has little educational significance. I could not disagree more, it has more significance, as it doesn’t go in pursuit of ‘knowledge’ per say, it aims to achieve: An improvement in perceptual knowledge of everyday surroundings, this helps to give students a greater ability to respond to situations in appropriate way; It also helps the students to focus, if they are in a game situation, they will focus on what they’re doing in order to respond appropriately to the movements of the game as its happening, this in turn can be transferred across the curriculum to the pupils’ other subjects, they will have increased concentration levels in lessons, thus increasing their ability to learn in the most effective manner. As well as this, students should be encouraged to compete as this gives them the chance to experience a certain degree of pressure and a drive to succeed as well, this could stand them in good stead for when exams or tests come around, they will have experienced some form of pressure to perform well so will know how to deal with it. Another thing PE has proven to do, is to alleviate stress, so when students undergo exams and they are feeling stressed, yet they participate in physical exercise, they will be more at ease, how...

Physical Education Issue Analysis Essay

...Introduction The issue that I am bringing up in my Physical Education Issues Analysis is “Should college be required to go pro in any sports today?”. The reason for this being an issue in sports is that lots of talent is going to waste today due to these people either being injured, or not passing college. This is a big issue because college can be a very hard journey to go through and can lead to many problems along the road. Analysis Argument for: Athletes should be able to make their own decisions and control their own future in their sport career. For some people, college is almost all risk with little reward, just one injury can end a career and they aren’t paid so much as a monthly salary/allowance for their playing time. Rookie contracts...

It would take until the spring of 2015 were I finally felt ready to take a class in person. I started slowly and took a physical education class for that spring. Should Wellness Or Physical Education Be In Public Schools?

...Do you think wellness or physical education should be in public schools ? Almost all of the public schools make students wellness or physical education. I think that is unfair i feel like the schools should let the students choose whether not they want to take P.E (physical education). Most students have been taking P.E for almost all thier life because public schools require it. Some people may think we need to keep it in schools but i say we don't really need it. ...Physical Education Assignment # 2 Name: Assignment #:2 S/C: Title: Sociology of Sport Due date: Teacher: Introduction Sociology is the study of human behavior and social interactions within particular contents. Sports sociology examines sports as a part of cultural and social life, and adds a different dimension and perspective to the study of sports and exercise. More specifically, sports sociology examines the relationship between sports and society and seeks answers to many issues and questions regarding sports and culture. Sports are a pervasive part of culture and are considered to be social constructions within society created by groups of individuals and based on values, interests, needs, and resources. Sport forms are created by groups of individuals. Each culture creates and uses sports for its own purposes; therefore, sports take different forms from culture to culture. It is only since 1970 that sports sociology has gained significant attention as a serious area of study. This is in part owing to the increasing major role sports play in our lives and the intellectual traditions in both physical education and sociology. In 1978, the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport was organized as a professional association; and its scholarly outlet for research, the Sociology of Sport Journal, was established in 1984. The International Committee for Sociology of Sport is acknowledged within the International Sociological Association, and both groups...
