For the first day of physical therapy, I suppose it could've been worse. At least the narcotics numbed the majority of the pain, though I would've been more appreciative if it had numbed all of the pain. My thoughts began to drift from medication to the day of my surgery; quite an eventful twenty-four hours. It was on June 11th, 2015. A rather brisk day, though I hadn't paid all that much attention at the time, my thoughts had been on my upcoming surgery. I warily entered the hospital and the doors quickly closed behind me. Hardly reassuring. After checking in I searched for the elevator, using the few moments I'd been given to calm my nerves. Well, some of them. The elevator doors opened and I stepped out onto the third floor. I was surprised at the lack of people, but after a lengthy yawn I managed to remember that it was seven-thirty in the morning. …show more content…
I considered pacing, but I didn't want to alert anyone to my nervousness, so I remained seated. My hands began to sweat and I felt a faint pounding in the back of my head. If this is how I'm feeling in the waiting room, what's going to happen when I actually enter surgery? Luckily, a nurse walked up to me, preventing me from lingering on that particular thought. She guided me to a small table in a corner so as to explain the use of a shock therapy device, and a motorized cooler. After the explanation, she told me another nurse would call me soon. I went back to my original seat somehow more anxious than

Personal Narrative: A Career In Physical Therapy

...This summer I had the opportunity to gain a great amount of knowledge and understanding into the career of a physical therapist. Physical therapy is a field which inspires me. My fascination with physical therapy began around 4 years ago, as I began my first session of physical therapy for a shoulder injury. I was exposed to the importance of a strong posterior chain, how to train specifically for your activity, as well as how to provide artificial support through the use of tape. Later, I was forced to have shoulder surgery. My post-surgery therapy and the rehabilitation strategy fueled my passion and respect for physical therapy. These lessons have motivated me to help people achieve not only their physical goals and capabilities, but also to break through their personal mental barriers....

Personal Narrative: A Career In Physical Therapy

...As the blades of the hospital wing whirled around with increasing speed, thousands of emotions flooded my mind. Just then, the helicopter took flight, and the reality of my grandmother's hemorrhagic stroke began to sink in. While I knew her road to recovery would be extensive- full of therapy and relearning simple tasks of daily living- I had no idea it would solidify my professional aspiration to pursue a career in physical therapy. Visiting my grandmother daily at Baptist's rehabilitation clinic opened my eyes to the rewarding career of physical therapy that would enable me to fulfill my desire to encourage and serve others. The opportunity to invest in patients while improving their quality of life made choosing physical therapy easy. Curious...

Personal Narrative: A Career In Physical Therapy

...Our day typically consisted of a strict daily plan that included caring for her personal and hygienic needs (diaper change, bathing, etc), administering her medications, and making critical decisions about the actions needed as a result of her inability to fully communicate along with her predisposition to seizures. It was imperative that I drove her to all her appointments with her therapists, initiate twenty hours of physical therapy, engage in five hours of swim therapy, while monitoring her every fluid intake, bowel movement, and nutrient take in, followed by restless nights that consisted of regular readjustments and transfers. Most people think that caregiving for kids with special needs is extremely strenuous and requires vast amounts of patience with the tolerance of a saint, but when I work with her and make her days better with a smile or a laugh I don't think about any struggles or difficulties. Working with her has been a rewarding experience and even while there have been difficult times, I see it more and as enjoyable than just a job. I encountered numerous job opportunities from families that shared similar circumstances who saw my relationship with her, her fondness...

Personal Narrative: A Career In Physical Therapy

...the news that I had torn my ACL and lateral meniscus, a soccer player’s worst nightmare. I had become completely discouraged. Thankfully, following my surgery I received treatment from the most amazing man. My physical therapist changed my life, he not only helped heel my knee, but also heeled my morale. He inspired my decision to become a physical therapist. Devoting my life to a sport I loved solidified my decision to specialize in athletic injuries, or so I thought. As previously mentioned in discussions I have been very exposed to disabilities. My high school had an inclusionary program that allowed me to meet many individuals with disabilities and learn to accept and understand their situations. This is where I first grew interested in disabilities. Immediately after my surgery I attended therapy regularly. I began to notice that a sweet girl with cerebral palsy also consistently went to physical therapy. It just so happened that she had appointments the same time as mine. Her...

Family Counseling Approach

...Family Counseling Approach: Narrative Lisa R. Murray Liberty University Online Abstract Narrative therapy is a therapeutic approach that is used alone or in conjunction with other methods of therapy. This particular method of therapy is used in family therapy to help clients focus on gaining access to preferred story lines in reference to their lives and identities the family dynamics that may affect them. The preferred story line will replace the place of the previous negative and self-defeating narratives about themselves.   Helping clients within a family counseling to begin to become the author of their own story is important in many cases to overcoming multigenerational affects. Narrative therapy aids in this process. This comprehensive evaluation of narrative therapy within the structure of family therapy and the integration of faith will be constructed in the following pages. Keywords: self-defeating, Narrative therapy, multigenerational, therapeutic Introduction Narrative therapy is considered apart of the Social Construction Model.   This particular type of therapy, the counselor or therapist is not a dominant entity or focal point of the process. Family Counseling Approach: Narrative Counseling

...Through narrative therapy a counselor can help clients gain access to preferred story lines about their lives and identities taking the place of previous negative and self-defeating narratives that destroy the self. Presented in this paper, is an overview of the Narrative therapy and the Social Construction Model and several facets of this approach including poststrucuralism, deconstructionism, self-narratives, cultural narratives, therapeutic conversations, ceremonies, letters and leagues. A personal integration of faith in this family counseling approach is presented and discussed also in this paper. NARUMI AMADOR’S FAMILY CONSELING APPROACH Introduction Narrative therapy is found under the Social Construction Model. Using the Narrative approach, the therapist will not be the central figure in the therapeutic process, instead he will be influential to the client, helping him/her internalize and create new stories within themselves to draw new and healthier assumptions about who they are. This process enables clients to distract from focusing on the negative narratives which defined their past, redefining their lives into future positive stories. Narrative therapists define the problem as the problem instead of defining the client as the problem. The therapy process begins redefining the problem, externalizing it and getting it out in the open. The narrative therapist uses the questioning technique and creates alternative narratives to connect...

Foot Massage

...Today, let’s talk about alternative medicine and method. Chinese Culture is full of traditional ways to feel amazement. A smoothing Chinese foot massage is one of the alternative methods which can be treated as a physical treatment to make people feel relaxation and decrease their body pain. Traditional Chinese foot massage consists of a foot bath followed by an intense massage on different pressure points in the feet, ankles and legs. Chinese foot massage has been practiced for centuries and it is popular in China. Both ancient Chinese books and modern medical texts mention the effect of foot massage which has been extensively used in treatment for medical symptoms, for example, arthritis, back, neck, and shoulder pain. It is also recommended by physiotherapists in China. Even the feeling of a traditional Chinese foot massage may differ, it basically begins with soaking the feet in hot water adding tea and herbs. During the feet soaking, the therapist massages a person’s shoulders, back and neck for 10 to 15 minutes. After that, the feet are removed from the water and the person is transferred to a comfortable chair where the therapist is ready to work. The therapist uses cream or lotion on the foot and then rubs, pushes and massages pressure points on the bottom, top, and sides of the foot. The foot massage is often painful, particularly for first timers because it is believed that each part of the foot is connected to a part of the body. If pain is felt in a particular part...

...A physical therapist plays an important role as a member of the health care team. Physical therapists provide pain relief and restore function and range of motion of a patient. The therapist starts evaluating a patient’s needs and goals usually after they have been sent there by a doctor. The therapist then treats the patients with pain relief techniques, hands-on methods, functional exercises, and movement strategies. All of the treatment strategies are used until a patient has progressed and achieved their goals. The goals are set by the patient to determine what they want to do now that they cannot do and any other goals they wish to achieve.
