Stage 1 Physics
Practical- motion
Aim: To investigate the speeds of different moving objects.
Hypothesis: If the ball is heavier then it will longer to cover a distance, therefore it will travel at a slower speed.
Variables:
Independent- The independent variable that was established before the practical was the weight of the ball. Dependent- Where the dependent variable relying on the independent variable was the time taken for the ball to travel a certain distance. Controlled-The controlled variable that were established within the motion practical where distance covered, the surface the ball was travelling on and the force that was applied to the ball.
Materials: The materials that are needed to complete this particular practical successfully are a- -Four stopwatches -measuring tape -graphics calculator -chalk -Three different weights for balls

Method: 1. The materials were gathered. (see materials) 2. A distance of eight metres in two metre intervals was measured and marked. 3. One person stood at the beginning preparing to roll the ball, while four others stood with a stopwatch. 4. The stopwatches were started as the ball was released. 5. The stopwatch was clicked to stop as it pasted the intervals. 6. Data was collected for each time completing the practical.

Description of trends:
The trend that was seen during the practical was a proportional relationship between the data collected. It was noticeably not directly proportional as the graph evidently proves that the line of best fit does not go through the origin. When calculation the relationship it will be whatever is added plus 0.40 seconds for the relationship between the data for a tennis ball, 0.59 seconds for a basketball and 0.60 seconds for a dodge ball.
Possible errors:
The possible errors that occurred during the practical where all random errors. Therefore all the errors made were by a person. These include the force that was applied when rolling the ball to make it go faster or slower on various occasions. To eliminate this random error we would have to complete the task of at least ten times to create an average to minimise the effect of the random error.
Improvements:
Improvements that can be made if to do the practical again would be to test everyone at applying force to the certain ball and rolling it over the same distance. Also varying the distance covered would have given different results, to the original set. Therefore we could have had more data to observe. In addition, completing the same practical more times would have reduced the effect of random errors and would have had precise data to present.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the results determined within the practical were as hypothesised, ‘if the ball is heavier then it will longer to cover a distance, therefore it will travel at a slower speed,’ this is evidently proven within the data collected with on average the heaviest ball, the basketball covered a distance of 1.50ms-1. Where the tennis ball, the lightest ball covered the distance of 2.00ms-1. Therefore the hypothesis made was correct in terms of the data collected for this particular practical report.

A philosopher, rather than physicist, Aristotle thought about the way objects interact with each other, particularly their motions. First we had to make a prediction of how a velocity and acceleration graph would look like with a cart going up the ramp. After that we actually started to do the experiment. We then went to the computer which would help us graph our measurements of each time we did the experiment. It measured velocity, acceleration, and position of the cart each time. We did the experiment about a couple times until we got a good looking graph, then we recorded it on our lab reports and used it for the rest of our remaining results. Before using that, we took a measurement of the angle of the ramp which turned out to be 4.04 degrees. After that, we then took the graphs we did that were on the computer and we used different tools to find out the acceleration and slope of each specific time in the reading the lab report told us to do.
