The need to succeed, be among the elite, financial gain, and the pressure to win are some of the many reasons that drugs are found in sports today. Drugs in sports range from therapeutic drugs, performance enhancement drugs, and recreational drugs. Drugs in sports are found on various levels of competition such as: high school, college, and professional sports. High school athletes' are using enhancement drugs so that they may receive a college scholarship, collegiate athletes' are using drugs so that they make it to the professional level, and professional athletes' are using drugs to make sure that they stay among the elite. Drug use in athletics have led to suspensions of players, athletes being banned from that particular sport, and ultimately death. There are many reasons for using drugs in sports, with performance enhancement being one of the top reasons, but no one will ever understand why athletes risk their career and lives. A concern for the public is the fact that athletes assume these risks just to be among the top competitors of sports. Drugs are a danger to the health of athletes. ...Forensic Toxicology It was during the years of 1998 and 2001 that a very demure and innocent looking woman named Van le Thahn began her killing spree. Thahn was 49 years old at the time and was from the city of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam. Van le Thahn successfully poisoned 13 people with cyanide. Named the Vietnamese Black Widow, Van would intentionally place herself in situations that would allow her to interact with people who were rich and affluent. After gaining access to the circle, Van would befriend those that she thought would be easy targets and victims to her scheme. She would cook for her new found “friends” and provide drinks that contained cyanide which ultimately ended their lives. Van did not discriminate when it came to her targets in some cases. It is estimated that Van killed thirteen people during the years of her killing spree, among the thirteen people she killed included was her mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and two ex-husbands. It is speculated that the killing of the members of Van’s extended family was due to ongoing family problems. Van’s main goal for the selection of her targets and killing them was to take their most valuables items for her possession or sell them for the money. Speaking of caffeine, the common belief that it improves both mental and physical performance, combined with the removal of caffeine from the banned substances list on the January 1, 2004 by the World Anti-Doping Agency, has led to its widespread use amongst athletes competing in many sports. Research updated that acute ingestion of caffeine before exercise has been shown to prolong exercise endurance, increase plasma epinephrine and serum free fatty acids (ffa’s), and spare muscle glycogen. Henceforth, it is clear that caffeine can be employed as an ergogenic agent or that it enhance athletic performance or facilitate physical exercise for a wide range of exercise conditions (Graham, 1997) and it is often proposed that this effect is mediated by enhancing fat oxidation and decreasing carbohydrate use in the active muscles.
