The most recently built dormitory at Georgia State University is Piedmont Central, where over 1,500 students live the in the heart of Atlanta, whether they live 30 minutes away from home or hours away from home. Piedmont Central has 11 floors where each floor is equipped with a study room, special activity room (play, movie, fitness, chat), gather room, and laundry room. I’ve been living at Piedmont Central for the past month, and because it was easily accessible, I decided to observe the “gather” room. The “gather” room is an open space which is dedicated to socializing and doing homework if desired. I observed at the beginning of the week, versus the end of the week from 7pm to 8pm, in order to be able to compare the differences in the atmosphere. In preparation for the observation, I simply sat on the closest available high chair and placed my book bag on the table. I actually only had one option since 5 high chairs were missing from the long, white, rectangular table. I made it seem as if I was doing homework and listening to music so it didn't seem too weird …show more content…
Also, the laundry room was directly in front of the chair I was siting in so I was easily able to notice that it was equipped with 3 washers and dryers. All of the washers were in use, while only one dryer was being used, this is actually not that bad for night time washing. A girl entered the gathering room while dragging her hamper behind her, and sat down on one of the green chairs nearest to the window. While she was waiting for her laundry, she was staring at her phone, sending texts and watching videos through her iPhone. Was I surprised? Not really. The current generation strongly relies on technology so I'm not surprised she spent her time tapping her fingertips on the screen.
