...Primavera Analysis Beatriz Picaz Section D4 Charles Stapleton February 29th 2012 Botticelli’s Primavera is an interesting piece of art. Like many works of art from the Renaissance, it has many scholars still arguing about what the painter was thinking when he painted this, in order to give some meaning to the figures and objects of the painting. The excerpts that were given to us helped to explain the painting from the perspective of two different scholars, who used various sources to help decipher the painting. Both were very interesting interpretations, however I found Zollner’s argument, as opposed to Zirpolo’s, to be more convincing based on his attention to every character in the painting. In the first excerpt, taken from Frank Zollner’s Botticelli: Images of Love and Spring, he takes each character from the Primavera and gives them a background and a story, based on sources from different text fragments. According to Zollner, the figure on the very left is Mercury, the messenger of the gods who divides clouds and drives away wind with his wand, which is discussed in Virgi’s Aenid He characterizes the little flying boy as Amor (Eros in Greek mythology), the son of Mars and Venus. Venus, the goddess of love and beauty is the woman at the very center of the painting. She is accompanied by the Three Graces. He explains how these characters are often found together in other literary works, like in one...

...of religion was the murder of Pim Fortuyn. Fortuyn was a Dutch politician who openly spoke about his discontent towards Muslim immigration. He saw the flaws of multiculturalism in the city of Rotterdam, which was inhabited by many mostly Muslim immigrants. Fortuyn's controversial ideas gained more and more publicity and he was often seen in the media. He appeared on several talk shows, including one in which he flaunted his homosexuality to a Muslim cleric. The imam responded with an anti-homosexual insult, to which Fortuyn said that this was the kind of Trojan Horse for intolerance the Dutch were letting into their country under the name of multiculturalism. Fortuyn founded his own political party named “Lijst Pim Fortuyn” and from then on had his eyes set on national elections. By doing so he reached an even broader audience. His controversial beliefs, however, resulted in him being called “racist” and “right wing”, both of which he denied being. He also received many death threats and was hit with a pie filled with urine and feces at his book publishing in 2002. Fortuyn asked for protection in the form of security guards, but his request was declined by authorities. In 2005 it was even revealed that the secret services were spying on him instead of protecting him. The combination of him not holding back on expressing his beliefs and the authorities not protecting him led to Fortuyn's murder on May 6, 2002. After giving a radio interview Fortuyn was approached by a man in the...

...Nowadays, whether a leader is charismatic enough is based on his leadership style. A person with a high leading ability will be valuable to the corporation. Most of corporations prefer employees who have a high level of leading ability. It is very crucial to choose leaderships because the corporations’ cultures, productivity, effectiveness and loyalty of employees are all rely on the leader and his leadership. There are two leadership theories that are transactional leadership and transformational leadership. Most of researches have discussed the definitions, factors, and frameworks of these theories, however, as for the contrasting evaluation of transformational leadership, it has been neglected. Therefore, this paper will briefly explain both transactional leadership and transformational leadership, and then report the negative side of transformational leadership. Moreover, how transformational leadership applies to the hospitality industry will be discussed as well. 1. Transactional leadership and transformational leadership From Northhouse (2015), transactional leadership is a traditional leadership style that concerns about the exchanges between leaders and followers. Bass (1985) states that transactional leadership primarily focuses on the exchange process and those exchanges have an impact on followers’ performance (as cited in Rothfelder, Ottenbacher &Harrington, 2013). It means that there is a transaction between the leaders and followers. It is premised by the...

However, both in academia and in popular media the critique on multiculturalism has grown and is often accompanied with arguments related to gender equality and/or feminism. According to political scientist Susan Moller Okin for example there are fundamental conflicts between our commitment to gender equality and the desire to respect the customs of minority cultures or religions. If we agree that women...
