...105 English Compositions I August 16, 2010 (O103) Anita Riehm A Day at the Hair Salon The day is Saturday, immediately I recognized that things were different as I struggled to find a parking spot in the tiny lot hidden just off the highway. The Hair Salon is located in an area to small too be considered a strip mall, and apparently too small to handle all of its clients cars. It is the third in a row of three shops, although the first is a former ice cream shop, the second a coffee and doughnut shop which was for rent. I knew all the drivers of the automobiles in the lot were in the Hair Salon, as the car wash across the street did not open until 9 a.m. Every Saturday morning here begins with a full parking lot. Once I found a parking spot, I was ready to begin my observation of Final Faze Barber & Beauty Salon, which specializes in all your hair care needs. I walked in to the Hair Salon looking for a corner seat. Air coming through the open door chilled the shop interior, which was filled with customers just fifteen minutes after the shop opened. The stares from those already seated in the shop’s red plastic chairs along the wall in the seating area, as well as from those in the stylist chair getting haircuts. As you wait for your turn in the stylist black chair you can look at hair magazines, read books, watch television, gossip on the hot topic for the day, and catch up on current events. A trip to Stanford University Medical School had convinced him it was possible to operate on the valves of the heart through a three-inch incision instead of the nearly foot long incision that was standard practice before splitting the patient’s breastbone with a saw to reach the heart.1 After refining the technique in the lab, he had successfully performed the first such operation. Eight months later, Cosgrove performed two of these surgeries back-to-back, broadcasting his work live via satellite to 4,000 surgeons in 40 cities around the world.
