Beautiful, colorful, and candy-filled they are called piñatas. Millions of people use piñatas year round for many different occasions like; birthdays and many Spanish and Mexican holidays and traditions. It was said that they dated back to the fourteenth century, in China, were they were, and first made using clay pots decorated with colorful paper shapes to make them look like farm animals. Supposedly, Marco Polo discovered the traditions on his expectation around the world .He founded out that each color that they used had a specific meaning according to the celebration. Their figures were filled with seeds, to signify abundant harvests and ensuring prosperity. The Mandarins beat the figures with sticks until they busted. They threw the remaining of the figures into a fire. Some of the villagers collected the ashes to take home to ensure good luck and abundance upon the year. Marco Polo was so inspired with the objects that he took some back to Europe with him, It was reported that piñatas had originated among the Aztecs, Mayans, and other native people of Mexico. They made clay pots of their gods and broke them with sticks to signify abundance and favor for their gods. During the birthday celebrations of the Aztecs God of War priests put a clay pot on a pole in the temple. The pot was decorated with colorful feathers and filled with small treasures like bead ornaments, colorful and painted stones, berries, nuts and many more things. The center player was blinded folded while trying to hit the pot that was held by a string. When the pot was broken the little treasures spilled on the feet of the god as an offering. Spanish conquistadors soon brought the piñatas practices to Mexico which became very popular because of the similar traditions of the Mayans. The Spanish soon changed the meaning of the piñata to the New World. In the beginning of the sixteenth century Spanish missionaries changed the traditional clay pot ceremonies into religious instruction sessions. They gave the pots an evil appearance by covering the pots with colorful paper. Their clay pots represented Satan. The piñatas represented hope. It was always hung above the head, which symbolized faith. The stick which broke the piñata symbolized righteousness. When the pot is broken, the candy, seeds, and fruit represented the reward for those who waited in faith. There was also much different Folklore between different people around the world. They now use piñatas for different things in the new world. The Mexicans, Spanish, And Cubans all had different beliefs about the use and traditions of the piñata in their countries. In the Mexican traditions the piñatas are no longer used with religious superstitions, but it is used for religious and secular festivities with equal gusto. People engage in the game just for fun now and bring surprise and joy to the party when the children break the piñata to see all of the goodies inside. Piñatas are very popular during Las Posadas and at birthday parties. Singing is also a very important part of these traditions during the celebration. They dance and hop around while trying to break the piñata. They have three traditional songs that they sing during the process. Our Lady of Guadalupe, a very important day that they celebrate, is celebrated on December 12 in Mexico and the United States. It’s a special festive day for families. They gather for parties and their main attractions are food and piñatas. Traditional shapes of piñatas are used on this day like: donkeys, which carried the Virgin Mary, fish, symbolizing Christ, and birds, for people who sang when Mary appeared to Juan Diego. This is also a namesake day because many girls and boys are named Guadalupe. In the New Spanish World, the wide- world popularity of the piñata has caused it to be reintroduces into Spain, with some similar styles to the one founded in the United States. When the piñata came to Spain from Italy, it was used during the first Sunday of Lent (Piñata Sunday), like in Italy. At that time the piñata represented Satan and when the participant broke it, it signified blind faith. That tradition was lost and the Spanish used the traditions in America as an evangelizing tool. Now the piñatas’ are used in many different ways with a different meaning. It was difficult to pinpoint when the piñatas became important in Cuba. In the 1950s piñatas were very important to a child at birthday parties. It was said that when the Cubans traveled to Mexico for their honeymoons during the 40s and 50s they brought these traditions back to their island. The piñatas wee broken differently, not by sticks. Cuban piñatas were opened by using ribbons, which came out the base. The material that they used was thinner and more breakable, so that it would not have to be pulled so hard.
