History
The first pinewood derby race was held on May 15, 1953 by the Cub Scout Pack 280C of Manhattan Beach (Meade 2006). Started by Don Murphy, pinewood derby races were intended for young boys too young for soapbox derbies. The original track was thirty-one feet long and, the finishing gate was rigged with door bells that would ring as a car passed over them (Bernau n.d.). Racing is spilt up by classes; A, B, and C. A ten year old would participate in class A, nine year olds, class B, and class C is for eight year olds. Winners of the first race were Dennis Lowrie, Richard Hoffman, and Mike Thorne (Meade 2006). Since 1953 the car has changed slightly. The original kit included 7 3/8 inch pinewood block and most cars were wedged shaped (Bernau n.d.). Currently the regulation size of a car is slightly smaller, 7 inches. After fifty years, pinewood derbies are still extremely popular. Most derbies are raced in heats and the winners continue to race until a grand racer is found (Unknown

Lead's easy workability, low melting point and corrosion resistance were among its attractions. Lead toxicity was first recognized as early as 2000 BC. Nicander of Colophon wrote of lead-induced anemia and colic in 250 BC. Gout, prevalent in affluent Rome, is thought to be the result of lead, or leaded eating and drinking vessels. Lead was used in makeup. Lead sugar (lead acetate) was used to sweeten wine, and the gout that resulted from this was known as saturnine gout.
