...Mother The poem “Mother” is a song written by the British band Pink Floyd, and it appears for the first time on their album “The Wall” from 1979. The poem is about a guy who’s got a very overprotecting mother. His mother wants to interfere in everything in her son’s life, and therefore he doesn’t get to do anything by himself. He doesn’t get to develop. The themes in the poem “Mother” is development, adolescence & the “mother to son”-relationship. The poem isn’t shaped like a normal song. It contains four verses, where the first and the third verse, plus the last sentence are the son talking to his mother, and where the second and the fourth verse is the mother talking to her son. In the first verse, the son asks his mother seven questions about the outside world. The mother replies to him in the second verse, where she is telling him that she is going to take care of him (“Momma's will keep Baby cozy and warm.”) They keep on communicating with each other all the way through the poem. It also says in the second verse, that “Momma's gonna make all of your nightmares come true. Momma's gonna put all of her fears into you” I interpret that as a very overprotecting mother, who always keeps everything that she think is dangerous away from her child. In that way, the child won’t get the experience that he needs to be an independent person, so he’ll take over his mothers fears, when he grow older. In the third verse, the boy is telling his mother about a girl. He is worried that she...

...Alistair K. Nye, Music 1306 Section 22148 Pink Floyd Forney, Kristine and Joseph Machlis. The Enjoyment of Music, 11th Edition / Shorter Version, Pg. 377 “The British group Pink Floyd has also exhibited great longevity: their 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon, with its ageless themes of madness and death, remained on the Top-200 charts for a record 751 weeks. Their operatic, two-album concept-piece, The Wall (1980) ensured them a place in the annals of rock. Both Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead helped to spawn a new generation of improvisational jam bands and psychedelic trance music in the 1990s.” Moore, Allan F. Encyclopedia of Popular Music The British rock band Pink Floyd was formed in 1965 by Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Rick Wright. They worked on several albums and were a leading force in the psychedelia movement and active participants in the counter culture of the 1960’s. They first achieved popular success with the album Atom Heart Mother released in 1970. The album was a combination of acoustic and choral songs and showed something of the style they would ultimately become most famous and recognizable for. The band would experiment with various sounds until they settled upon one that fit them and the time in which they lived. Pink Floyd had gone through a lineup change in ’68 and had replaced Syd Barrett with Dave Gilmour, who would provide the band with the slow, mournful and sometimes haunting guitar work that would prove to be...

Throughout this paper, the life of Robert Frost will be explained along with some of his outstanding poetry. We will discuss who he was, how Frost started in writing his poetry, and how some of his poems relate to what is happening in today's world. Robert Frost was named after the Southern General, Robert E. Lee. He was born on March 26, 1874, in San Francisco, California. Because his parents were a teacher and a journalist, he was always around books. He studied literature from William Shakespeare and poems from Robert Burns and William Wordsworth. Robert excelled in many topics in school such as history, botany, Latin, and Greek. Frost also played football and graduated top of his high school class. Robert Frost started writing poems at an early age. His first poem, “La Noche Triste” was published in his high school newspaper. Frost later enrolled in an Ivy League college in Hanover, New Hampshire. Robert Frost was not fond of the campus life so he quit college and started teaching while he was writing poetry. ...The sneetches, who lived on the beaches, were a group of sentient animals minor resembling birds. There were two groups of sneetches, the Plain-Bellied variety, and the Star-Bellied Variety. Both varieties of sneetch are a pale, pollen yellow, with large abdominal regions, long, fur-covered arms and legs, and a long neck with two small rings of hair on them. The only difference between the breeds is the large green star directly above the waist of the Star-Bellied Sneetch. The Stared Variety of sneetch were the majority group; they were not a nice group either. They made up approximately sixty-six to seventy-five percent of the sneetch-on-the-beach population. ...Pink Floyd are an English rock band formed in London. They achieved international acclaim with their progressive and psychedelic music. Distinguished by their use of philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, and elaborate live shows, they are one of the most commercially successful and musically influential groups in the history of popular music. Founded in 1965, Pink Floyd originally consisted of students Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright. They first gained popularity performing in London's underground music scene during the late 1960s, and under Barrett's creative leadership they released two charting singles and a successful debut album. David Gilmour joined as a fifth member in December 1967; Barrett left the band in April 1968 owing to his deteriorating mental health. After Barrett's departure, Waters became the band's primary lyricist, and by the mid-1970s, their dominant songwriter, devising the original concepts behind their critically and commercially acclaimed albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979) and The Final Cut (1983). Wright left Pink Floyd in 1979, followed by Waters in 1985. Gilmour and Mason continued as Pink Floyd and Wright subsequently joined them as a paid musician and later once again a full member. They continued to record and tour through 1994; two more albums followed, A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994). Inducted into the US Rock...

... Matt rushed to get his clothes on, hopping out his door, poking his arms out of the sleeves. He inspected the house for any sign of Anna, but it seemed as if she had already left. Slowly, Matt opened up the door, being cautious to not wake anyone that was still asleep. Sprinted as fast as he could, he swung his arms towards Ripper Hill. Anna was already started to build snowy defenses on crucial points. "Up here!" Anna bellowed down as Matt started to crawl up the steep slope. "Looks like you been doing a lot of work," Matt complimented as he paced around the the fortress. There were thick walls, heavily packed with small containers for snowballs beside each ones. "I don't think this needs anymore improvements," Matt stated, still in awe. "Make more snowballs, the more the merrier," Anna ordered, hurrying from wall to wall, scraping snow from the the ground and reinforcing the walls. It was nearing noon and other small groups of children had traveled to other parts of the park and set up their own base. Being on Ripper Hill, we had the height superiority and was able to supervise the other bases. An hour had passed and the groups had almost finished their forts. Tommy was located in a nearby hill staring at us and sliding his finger across his neck. "You might as well forgot already!" Tommy hollered from his base. "We'll see about that," Matt whispered under my breath. The starting whistle roared and echoed through the entire park. Everyone rushed out their base attempting...

...Conflict AsJohnson Sr. 11/4/2012 There are all kinds of conflict witnessed from me. You have the Pseudo Conflict where some of the members did not want to hear the perceptions of the problems. You have the Simple Conflict where people had disagreement over the course of action where this was to be expected because this was the cause of the meeting, to agree or disagree with the location of the church. We also had Ego Conflict, where Paul had to throw in that he is the chair of the committee. There was no need for him to state that he was the chair, I am certain that everyone who was there knew that he was the chair of the church. Some strategies the committee can use to by next month are: * Taking a vote to see which members agree or disagree with moving the church. * Pros and Cons list, moving to the suburbs or staying at the same location. * If they stay at the same location and still need more funding, find ways to raise more money. Ask the local and or federal government for funding options. Try to get the community more involved and raise money to rebuild at the same location. * Ask all members to help with reconstruction. * Gather information on the suburb move funding. * If the church moved to the suburbs, find was of commuting members to the new church. Some ways to keep the conflict from disrupting the meeting again: * Respect each other. * Share the floor/take turns when talking. * Discuss everyone’s thoughts. * Make everyone...

...“Mending Wall” by Robert Frost The harsh reality of life is that many of us put up walls for no reason other than we were told by someone, or it was passed down from generation to generation without question. We will erect walls around types of people, places, religion, and things without understanding why we even do it. “Mending Wall” by Robert Frost portrays a view that we are seeing today around the world. So many groups of people all walled off from each other, and it does not allow them to become friends or to understand each other’s culture. When the wall comes down, people figure out that all of us want the same things out of life. Robert Frost’s “Mending Wall” is about walls that people set up for no reason whatsoever. Frosty shows quickly that there is something wrong when he begins the point with “something there is that does not love a wall” (563). The poem tells the story of two landowners who appear to be following a tradition that has been passed down from father to son. They never discuss the importance of the wall; however, they meet every year to walk their respective sides of the wall and attempt to repair it. The poem leads the reader to believe that they repair this wall only once a year after each winter. The leakage from either side of the wall is not the entire reason for the task. The speaker goes as far as to say to the stones themselves “stay where you are until our backs are turned” (563); this would lead you to believe that there is no...

...A stone wall separates the speaker’s property from his neighbor’s. In spring, the two meet to walk the wall and jointly make repairs. The speaker sees no reason for the wall to be kept—there are no cows to be contained, just apple and pine trees. He does not believe in walls for the sake of walls. The neighbor resorts to an old adage: “Good fences make good neighbors.” The speaker remains unconvinced and mischievously presses the neighbor to look beyond the old-fashioned folly of such reasoning. His neighbor will not be swayed. The speaker envisions his neighbor as a holdover from a justifiably outmoded era, a living example of a dark-age mentality. But the neighbor simply repeats the adage. The image at the heart of “Mending Wall” is arresting: two men meeting on terms of civility and neighborliness to build a barrier between them. They do so out of tradition, out of habit. Yet the very earth conspires against them and makes their task Sisyphean. Sisyphus, you may recall, is the figure in Greek mythology condemned perpetually to push a boulder up a hill, only to have the boulder roll down again. These men push boulders back on top of the wall; yet just as inevitably, whether at the hand of hunters or sprites, or the frost and thaw of nature’s invisible hand, the boulders tumble down again. Still, the neighbors persist. The poem, thus, seems to meditate conventionally on three grand themes: barrier-building (segregation, in the broadest sense of the word), the doomed nature of...

...Rich Zigarski Comp. 102/8 9/6/13 In my life music has always played an important role because my parents always had some type of music on. Since I was the middle child, I would get stuck listening to my sister’s music in the car and around the house. I never really had an interest in her Top 40 pop hits, and leaned towards more of what my father listened to. My dad would always listen to older, rock type music. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Dr. Hook, and even Tom Jones. As I grew older and started elementary school my taste for music started to change. I started basing my friends off of who liked older rock music. I would sit in the play yard at recess and we would listen to our Walkman’s and talk about how we wish we could play music the way our favorite bands was able to play. As I started to play sports in middle school, my taste for music begin to turn.During sports, I met a lot of people with different tastes in music. I stayed away from people who liked country, pop, or dance music. I started making connections with friends who listened to rock, hip hop, and rap. Most of these people were my friends throughout high school and some are even today. In college, music has played a huge role in my life. I always have music around me no matter what I am doing. When I wake up, my alarm starts playing music. I go to class to come back and start doing homework while listening to music. When I go to the football stadium to work, they players are always listening to...
