Female Pirates

...Female Pirates Kristina A. Paxton (Shaarda) Excelsior College Women have been held to have particular power over the sea. There is an ancient superstition that women are not good for ships. The contradiction between woman as sea power and woman as a sea jinx is hard to understand. Women pirates however rarely brought bad luck to a ship, they were actually very good luck, and their loss to a ship often brought an end to that ships sailing days. The women that sailed the seas came from all walks of life; there were royals such as Queen Teuta of Illyria who sailed in the 200’s B.C., as well as the Irish seafaring clanswoman, Grace O’Malley, who was practically royalty in that culture in the 1500’s. There were also illegitimate daughters of maids and merchants such as Anne Bonny and Mary Read who sailed the Caribbean in the 1600’s, and finally a Chinese prostitute who controlled one of the most powerful pirate fleets the world has ever seen in the 1800’s. Female pirates were once again seen on the seas recently when a woman pirate named Sister Ping (Ching Chui Ping) smuggled Chinese immigrants to the United States and England was caught and imprisoned in 1990. The Pirate code forbade women from being on board a pirate ship, so women typically dressed and carried themselves as a man in order to become a pirate. These women pirates were truly exceptional in their determination and strength of character to seek their fortune in what was not only a dangerous way of life, but...

Pirates of the Caribbean

...Pirates of the Caribbean is a series of fantasy adventure comedy films by Jerry Bruckheimer and based on Walt Disney's theme park ride of the same name. Directors of the series include Gore Verbinski (1–3), Rob Marshall (4), and Joachim Ronning & Espen Sandberg (5). The series was scripted by Terry Rossio, Ted Elliott (1–4), and Jeff Nathanson (5), with the stories following the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) . The films take place in a fictional historical setting; a world ruled largely by an amalgam of alternative, evil versions of the British Empire and the East India Company, with the pirates representing freedom from the ruling powers. The films started with their first release on the big screen in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. After the first film's success, Walt Disney Pictures revealed that a trilogy was in the works. The franchise's second film, subtitled Dead Man's Chest , was released three years later in 2006; the sequel proved successful, breaking financial records worldwide the day of its premiere. The third film in the series, subtitled At World's End, was released in 2007. Disney released a fourth film, subtitled On Stranger Tides, on May 20, 2011 in conventional 2D, Digital 3-D and IMAX 3D. It succeeded in grossing more than $1 billion, becoming the eighth film in history to achieve this. So far, the film franchise has grossed $3.72 billion worldwide; it is the sixth highest-grossing film series of all-time;...

Pirates Strangers Tides

...Hi,   Disney's latest, P.o.c- on stranger tides, is not an action entertainer as that of P.o.c - at the world's end. But it certainly has all the ingredients to keep you glued to your seats. It's an out and out johnny depp movie, where he carries it all through with ease and his usual, yet different gestures.     The plot of the movie revolves around Spaniards, British and the pirates, who are all set in search for fountain of youth. Even though it sounds same [group of people fighting for a common thing] as the previous ones, the manner in which it is dealt is gripping. As the action sequences are less in this venture, more effort have been put on comedy sequences. This is where Depp has scored immensely. Mentioning about his action sequences, the one which stood out was Depp's escape from king's palace, which was as good as any of the captain's earlier escapes.                   Apart from johnny, other noticeable performances were from Penelope Cruz, Ian Mcshane & Geoffrey Rush. Especially Ian Mcshane, in the role of Black Beard scores all through, starting from his introduction as the captain, till he is fooled to death by depp in the closing moments of the film. This legendary actor proves again why he is a valuable asset to any film. For Penelope Cruz, as Angelica, you can never take this as her best, but still she has essayed her part to perfection as the daughter of Blackbeard.           A new addition to this venture are the appearance of mermaids with killer...

The Pirate Bay Case Study

...1. How does The Pirate Bay business make money? What is its business model? The Pirate Bay business profits nearly $4 million a year from advertising. So advertising is their form of making money. The Pirate Bay’s business model is the “advertising revenue”. This site provides a opportunity of advertisements and receives payments from the advertisers. If more viewers use the website, the more the site can charge and increase their profits. 2. How do new “cloud-based” media sites and services make money? What is their business model? Subscription revenue is the business model that cloud-based media sites use to make money. With subscription revenue it allows access to almost all of the content or services to their viewers for a small fee. The fees for subscription vary on what kind of service the consumer wants and for how long. 3. Is the record industry justified in attempting to shut down P2P file-sharing sites that make it possible to download copyrighted media? Why or why not? Record industries are justified in wanting to stop P2P file-sharing websites. There is millions of money spent by record companies to produce albums and the work put into creating music and movies for the public. So it would be justifiable if record industries wanted to put a stop to people stealing their work and taking money out their pocket that they deserved. I would subscribe to a site for a small fee like the cloud based sites if it had the content that would fit my needs. ...

Pirates

...REACTION PAPER (PIRATES OF SILICON VALLEY) Mary grace D. Acero CS-3a The movie “PIRATES OF SILICON VALLEY” is all about how Apple and Microsoft got started. This creation was made because of the two intelligent people: Steve Jobs for Apple and Bill Gates for Microsoft. It shows how the first Apple computer was made which is the Macintosh. The movie is also about how the two intelligent persons compete to each other in order to be a successful or famous. It also shows how a good leader handles his employees or team. Just like with Steve Jobs. He is so abusive to his workers. It just like he is only the good person. He always wants to follow his decisions and not giving chance to listen to the opinions or decisions of his teammates. That’s why he had also a problem when it comes to his family. It is quite opposite to Bill Gates. Because Bill is just a simple man and he used his intelligence in good way. That’s why he succeeds much compared to Steve Jobs and became a wealthiest man in the world. I learned from that negative attitude of Steve Jobs. It teaches me not to be high regard to yourself in whatever achievements you will have. It’s because we cannot conclude what the future will holds, sometimes those who are not considered now might be the one who will succeed more. In everything we do, we should be humble. We should also consider the opinions of others. Their points of view will sometimes help us succeed not only for our own interest but to the whole organization...

...misconceptions and where those notions arose from. This essay will focus on the overview of what a pirate is, who a pirate is, where pirates are located, when pirates occur, and why pirates become pirates, based on the information that Cordingly gives us. To discuss the subject of pirates, one must first answer the question, “what is a pirate?” In this text, many different types of people who would not have been identified by themselves or by their contemporaries as pirates, fall under the overarching term “pirate” through the usage of the term in the title. Cordingly says, “A pirate was, and is, someone who...

...1.0 INTRODUCTION Oilene Refineries’ management was unhappy with the quality of crude palm oil (CPO) delivered by Palm Haul Sdn Bhd (PHSB), their transporter. The contract will expire within the month. Oilene Refineries will have to analyse the scenario and make a decision whether to renew the contract with PHSB or find other solutions. 1.1 GENERAL INFORMATION –Crude Palm Oil (CPO) transportation * Approximately 1,500 tankers transporting CPO from the mills (where palm kernels are harvested) to the refineries (where palm kernels are processed for CPO extraction) in the peninsular and East Malaysia. * Palm oil estates operated by MNC have their own mills while smallholders send their palm kernels to co-operative mills for processing. * Once the CPO is extracted, it is then sold to refineries where it is refined for local consumption or export. These refineries are concentrated in areas where palm oil cultivation is a major activity. * The refineries commonly OUTSOURCE the transportation of CPO to transport companies. The transport companies are responsible to deliver consignments of CPO from the mills to the refineries. * The tankers have to be modified to carry CPO. * Approximately 17.73 million metric tonnes are moved yearly from the mills to the refineries by the tankers operated by transport companies. * Gross profit margins: 35%-45% * Administrative overheads are low. ...exactly is so wrong with pirating? Piracy of entertainment is illegal and viewed as typically wrong by majority of people. Personally I have saved quite possibly thousands of dollars in pirating in my life. From the days of LimeWire where you could pirate a single song that you would have to download and wait throughout the night for it to be usable. To today where we are able to download whole discographies of artists within half an hour or less. However, today I would like to present you the facts that piracy isn’t as wrong as it appears and how each and everyone in this room can benefit from it by providing information on how it cannot be stopped, the monetary impacts of piracy, and other benefits of piracy. Transistion: Piracy is defined as the illegal trade or copy of digital entertainment according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. A study by Portsmouth University in 2014 concluded that the motives for piracy are that it saves money, often helps artists bypass record companies and allows access to content before it’s release date. Body I: Now that we know why people pirate we can look at how Piracy cannot be stopped. A. Goverments have attempted and momentarily succeded to take down pirating websites such as The Pirate Bay, but they revived and came back under multiple new domains within a short period of time B. In 2011 a bill called ‘SOPA’ or STOP ONLINE PIRACY ACT was introduced by US Representative Lamar Smith. This bill would have expanded the ability of...

Modern Pirates

...David Taylor Ellis INTS 2130 Analysis paper Mar 29, 2015 Modern Pirates In some fictional works pirates are portrayed in a heroic way. For example, Luffy, captain of the main band of pirates in the popular anime cartoon One Piece, is depicted as a fun loving adventurer that chases his dreams. He is a character to be emulated. Unfortunately, the modern day Somali pirates of East Africa have that similar effect on some of the Somali people. According to the African Economic Development Institute (AEDI), the bigger and more sophisticated European and Asian fishing ships took advantage of the governmental collapse and the ensuing civil war in Somalia in 1991. With permission of the corrupt military leaders and landlords, they greedily over-fished leaving the poor Somalian fishermen with very little. By 1997, several European countries had polluted Somali waters with their waste worsening the problem for the locals. This forced the Somali fishermen to become the Somali pirates (AEDI 5). Pirates are very wealthy men in their country. In a place where everyone suffers in poverty, a little wealth can seem like the cowl of a cape crusader. Despite their reasoning, the actions of the Somali Pirates are negatively affecting Somalia, neighboring countries and the countries who are taking anti-piracy measures to stop them. In 2010 it is estimated that pirates indirectly cost their neighbors about 125 billion dollars (“Maritime piracy costs”). Egypt is losing revenue that comes from...

Pirates Of Duty

...During its first week opening, I went to go see Boise State’s production of Pirates of Penzance. It’s the classic well-known operetta by the writing duo of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, They are a pair or Victorian playwrights are known for their comedic style. As with their style of writing, they deal with the theme of this play with a sense of humor. The theme of this play is very clear when you look at the lesser known title of the play “The Slave of Duty”. The theme deal with the sense of duty a character has to do something, because it’s the right thing to do. They have the responsibly to do so, and in this play’s case, even if it were cause them to betray the ones they were loyal to. It’s interesting for this production that the optional title was absence...

Pirates of the Silverland

...Problem statement Quality and quantity of CPO delivered The root problem encountered in this case is the quality and quantity of the CPO delivered. Palm Haul Sdn Bhd’s (PHSB) major client Oilene Refineries Sdn Bhd is unhappy with their service mainly because the CPO delivered is either contaminated or short delivered. The CPO delivered to Oilene is contaminated with either sludge or water. This is due to unethical behavior of tanker drivers who involve in oil piracy by siphoning the CPO and selling them to syndicates. The CPO that is being siphoned is replaced with either water or sludge so the end user will not realize the theft. Further, this situation prevailed as the oil piracy during the time period of 2009 was robust with a record of approximately RM 325 million of CPO production lost annually. This hence triggered the tanker drivers to actively involved in this illegal activity. Apart from that, delivery of contaminated CPO has a negative impact on Oilene operation as they have to shut down the plant to clean the sludge almost every week and thus affects their delivery time and the quality of oil produce. Besides, the consignment from PHSB is causing more problem than other transporter which gives a competitive advantage over their rivals and might risk losing their contract to Oilene. Apart from that, the CPO delivered to Oilene does not match with the numbers in the delivery order; which means they are being short delivered. This has incurred a high cost in the...

Pirates Throughout History

...Throughout history there are incidences of pirates and privateering, but the correct definition or interpretation of the role of pirate is somewhat ambiguous. Over time the representations of piracy have changed, names such as pirate, privateer, corsair and rover are often used to set an atmosphere of intrigue around the naval warfare of the time. Piracy is often viewed from a romantic perspective of free traders fighting against the ever growing control of global trading, stealing from the idea that Marcus Tullius Cicero supposedly quoted “hostis humani generis” that pirates were the enemy of all mankind, the terrorists of their day. This quote is attributed to the result of medieval paraphrasing by Edward Coke, Cicero actually said:...

Golden Age Pirates

...The idea of golden age pirates being “savages” and prioritizing loot over everything is a big misconception. Some historians say, in 1715, that evidence leads to belief that the republic created by pirates of the golden age, and indian ocean, was better managed and maintained than the monarchy in Great Britain. Given that islands like New Providence were smaller than some of the British city-states, the taxation and commerce that pirates put into effect yielded fantastic results for the inhabitants as well as their government; whereas the social class scale in Great Britain and British North America was tipped all the way up on one end, giving no chance of a proper lifestyle to those of the lower class. While countries like Great Britain, Jamaica, and Spain were pouring funds into a large naval armada, New Providence Island was thriving as its own independent civilization. Henry Avery, who sparked the pirate regime on New Providence Island, molded the foundation to the land of free men in the Caribbean....

...ICS PRESENTATION CASE 2 Issue 3 : Auditor’s issue. The independence of auditor’s in Flat Cargo Berhad(FCB) is much questionable. This is mainly due to the fact that the appointed company auditor has been previously hit by another case of fraud in the other entity concern. This could be a very worring circumstances that the company has to face as there is high posibility of the auditor to commit fraud the second time in FCB. The lack of independence in the auditor could lead to inappropriate analysis of the financial statments in which the financial statements are not in a true and fair manner. The auditor is also neglecting the responsibility to rely on the previous auditor’s report in order to give a reasonable assurance. This will subsequently lead to a wrong decision making process by the management and finally producing a fraudelent material mistatement reports that mislead the users of this report such as stakeholders, investors and regulatory bodies( government and MASB). 2. By end of 2006, it was reported that FCB had been involved in accounting fraud that inflated its earnings for 2004 to 2006. In your opinion, should the auditors be held responsible for not detecting the misstatement earlier? (refer to ratio analysis) In my opinion, I strongly believe that the auditor’s should be held responsible for not detecting the material mistatement earlier. Owing the fact, that the responsibility of the appointed auditor’s is clearly stipulated in the auditing standards...
