...First, lets start by explaining plagiarism and by listing the many different forms of it. “To plagiarize is to: to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own, to use (another's production) without crediting the source, to commit literary theft, or to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source”(Merriam-Webster 2012). When you steal someones words and use them as your own, you are saying that the original author had nothing to do with the material and that you came up with it. A good example would be if I wrote a book about a wizard, named Harry Potter, without providing credit to J.K. Rowling who actually wrote the book. That is essentially the most basic form of plagiarism that everyone...

...Free Essay Checkers for Professionals and Writers The internet has made it easier to access information and though there are benefits to this, there are disadvantages. More and more students are taking the lazy approach of using someone’s work and not correctly crediting the author. Yes, it might have become tedious to originate or communicate original ideas, but it is still illegal to plagiarize. With the advent of technology, many educators or online professionals are now better equipped to grade their student’s paper. No longer do professors pour over every paper and have a Britannica memory to see if their students have plagiarized someone else’s work. Essay checkers are of great benefit for people who have to write, review or edit papers constantly and need to conduct grammar and plagiarism checks....

...and communication technology (ICT), plagiarism becomes a much more serious problem in the academic community as plagiarism are easily committed with the help of ICT. In this report, my focus will be on the types of Academic Plagiarism, Academic Policy used and how plagiarism will affect the students and organization. “What is plagiarism?” [1] In my opinion, I believed that plagiarism is the act of passing someone else's work as your own without giving credit to the original. It can also be something like having “A quotation of a sentence or two, without quotation marks and without a citation to the original author”. [2] According to the dictionary.com, plagiarism is defined as “An act or instance of...

...Quarterly” the article was written in 2008 and its authors are, Sileo, J. M., & Sileo, T. W. The second article used for my research was found when searching with key words “online academic honesty” and was conducted also in the EBSCO Discovery Service. The title of the second article is “Monitoring Help Ensure Academic Honesty”, which was written in 2005 by Online Classroom, 1-3. From information contained in these two articles came specific items at concern for academic honesty in an online or distance learning environment. One issue that was consistent for online the distance learning environment is using internet term paper websites to download or purchase papers, plagiarism in its most extreme form. The best remedy for this would be a good software detection program such as the University’s Plagiarism Checker program. This can catch all kinds of used data as long as they have been used before. Another issue could be since connected to distance learning and academic honesty is the availability for students to communicate during exams and quizzes. As students in distance learning are not monitored as in a traditional classroom and have the ability of email and Instant Messaging it is easy to communicate with each other regarding test and quiz material and even answers while preparing and even taking the test. Ways to combat this practice would be to give timed tests where the time for communication would limit the number of questions that...

...Plagiarism Abstract: Plagiarism is theft. There are many forms that plagiarism can take, but the results are the same. Students plagiarize for many reasons, some innocent, some not so much so. Time management and study skills are essential tools to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism can, and should be, avoided on student’s behalf. Plagiarism The world-wide-web is exactly that, world wide. This means there is a veritable plethora of information about anyone or anything you can imagine as well as many websites where students sell their work to others for a small fee. Using these particular sites is not the problem; the fact that most of the time copy and paste are used next is. This is a form of plagiarism or using another’s work as your own. Plagiarism is a widespread problem in universities as well as online. In this essay, we will examine exactly what constitutes plagiarism, why plagiarism happens, and what the consequences of plagiarism can be. A group at the University of Missouri at Columbia School of Journalism says that plagiarism is: “The use of any part of another’s writing and passing it off as your own.”(Shotz, 2008). The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines plagiarism as “to steal and pass off (ideals or words of another) as one’s own: (another production) without crediting the source, present as new and original an ideal or product derived from an existing source.” When a student plagiarizes, he or she takes...

...Plagiarism Not Fit for School Plagiarism is part of an existing problem of academic dishonesty. A third of high school students acknowledge copying from the internet for a paper (Facts & Stats). We live in an age where information is freely available. The internet has made that possible, also making cheating a task that is easily accomplished. People download music and movies the same way they can download a term paper. You can download a song, burn it to a CD, and put it in your car and listen to it without any realistic consequences. So why can’t you borrow a few lines from an article and put them in your paper without acknowledging the source? Turns out a lot of students do this. The same as downloading music, they don’t suffer any realistic consequences. Plagiarism is “the act of using another person's words or ideas without giving credit to that person” (Merriam-Webster). According to this definition, plagiarism extends far beyond just academia or writing. It is also prevalent in TV and radio. One notable case is joke theft. George Lopez, a Mexican-American comedian, confronted fellow comedian Carlos Mencia for stealing his jokes (Joke Theft). The act of joke theft amongst comedians has been around as long as stand up comedy has been popular. TV and radio broadcasters plagiarize every day. They read a story on the air without acknowledging the source. I think this form of plagiarism is actually borderline criminal. They are making a profit off of the information they are...

...HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM: USEFUL INFO, TIPS, AND FREE PLAGIARISM SCANNERS WHAT IS PLAGIARISM? Every student has heard of plagiarism, but what is it exactly? By definition, plagiarism is “the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.”[i] In other words, plagiarism is theft. It is against the rules in all academic institutions and, though not a criminal offense, can be detrimental to one’s academic career. What happens to students who plagiarize is entirely up to their academic institution: consequences range from a stern warning to expulsion, depending on the severity of the case and the institution’s policy. Of course, not all plagiarism is done on purpose: often, students make citation errors or...

...I am going to explain to you why plagiarism is so bad and ways you can prevent it. Firstly, it is good to be original; to have your own thoughts and to have your own words. Everyone has different writing styles and doing your own work will help your professor to see which style is yours. For example, my style is more stream-of-consciousness. My writing flows from the heart. If one time your paper sounds very humorous and there is some spelling and grammar errors and the next time your paper very serious and it is practically perfect, that’s a red flag and it probably will get acknowledged. Next, It is ok to be influenced by other people’s work. Shoot if no one used anyone’s work, I think we would all be in the dark about pretty much everything. The most important thing about using someone else’s work is that you must cite it. References and citations are not very hard when you have the right resources at your fingertips. And all of us being students at University of Phoenix have those sources. On our student website, we have a reference and citation generator. Personally I use it all the time. All you do is plug in all your information that you are using and it generates the citation for you AND the reference. All you have to do is copy and paste you your paper. Lastly, if still are insisting on plagiarizing, it is good to know the consequences. Some universities have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to plagiarism. This means...

...Dear Katrina, Unfortunately, your passage is an example of mosaic plagiarism. Mosaic plagiarism occurs when an individual uses information from a source without citing the sources’ work. The material used from the source doesn’t have to necessarily be word for word, it can be general information found from the source. Although you have taken the key information and put it into your own sentencing and structuring I believe that it is still an example of plagiarism. I believe this because you have copied key information from Middle English from C. Hugh Holman’s A Handbook to Literature without inserting in-text citations and referencing it at the end of your paper. An example of this is in your paragraph you state “We usually think of this age...

...After reviewing the submitted paper on Lab Courses I have determined that plagiarism has been committed. After running the paper thru the plagiarism checker I have found that not only has it been plagiarized but it has been completely copied from another source. Plagiarism is a serious offense that can have serious consequences to you and your academic career. The consequences can range from a failing grade on the paper, to a failing grade in the course and can be as severe as expulsion from school. This in turn may have a diverse effect on getting into another school, whether it is online or traditional. Plagiarism is never okay. You must always do your own work and be sure to properly cite anyone else’s work that you use. Plagiarism is dishonest because when you use someone else’s work, you not only demean their work but you learn nothing from what you have done. Also if you have no problem plagiarizing it may start a path to more unethical issues as you get older. If you cannot do your own work and have to plagiarize, then what would make you think that you would have the skills to have a career. I think that using anyone else’s work is academic dishonesty. Cheating on any quiz or test that you are doing from home would also be academic dishonesty. I think that basically using any words, or discussion that did not come from your own mouth would be dishonesty. You should never use someone else’s work as your own and you should always make sure to give credit where credit...

...navigating the university library very easy by making everything easy to find. The most important tool is the Center for Writing Excellence (CWE). The links are there to help expand college writings; for example, WritePoint, Plagiarism Checker, and Tutorials and Guides. Also found in the Library Resources are many resources that have accurate articles and information that I can cite as noted in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition). They are broken out in major and specialized articles. The major database can be used for broad searches and the specialized database can be used for specific searches. Upholding Academic Honesty According to www.dictionary.com (2009), plagiarism is the use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work. This includes self-plagiarism. It is school policy that all works be the student’s own original thoughts unless clearly cited. The University Library has tutorials on how to cite correctly in academic works. Plagiarism is a serious offence that carries serious consequences; for example, failure, suspension, or expulsion. To avoid plagiarism, I submit papers through the Plagiarism Checker in the CWE and adjust as-needed. Setting and Achieving Goals Setting goals is important as well as knowing how to identify them. The short-term goals should lead up to a long-term goal. The goals set should be attainable...
