...Fitch BCOM/275 July 18, 2012 Peter Quinn Article Rebuttal In an article titled “No college football playoff, please” the author Chuck Klosterman argues that a playoff system for college football would be bad for the sport. In a short rebuttal to the article I will analyze the reliability, credibility, and validity of the data used by the author as well as identifying any fallacies in the argument. In the article the author takes a position against a playoff system for college football and ends it by stating, “I realize no one else feels this way. I do not care” (Klosterman, 2007). That statement itself is a common fallacy of rationalizing. The author is stating their opinion on the issue at the same time rejecting any other feedback on the topic. So basically saying this is what I think and what you think does not matter. The author’s argument itself is not reliable for he only states his side of the issue; this leaves a lot of controversial issues left untouched. As far as the credibility of this argument the author’s only source used is that of his own opinions. This makes it hard for the audience to take the authors side regarding the argument. Without any outside sources one can only relate to the authors opinions. The argument itself can be considered as valid only because the author sticks to the premise against a playoff system and also concludes with that same train of though regarding the subject. Therefore it is a valid argument, however...

...Nicie Sharae Moten Sports in Society Coach Mohr Tues. 7-9:50 pm My Life in Sports My sports life began when I was just a little girl. My parents, well mainly my dad, would put me into different classes to play sports. As I grew up, my two older brothers, Raymond and Timothy Moten that played football and basketball. I would never be in the house because I would be with them playing outside. I would play along with them till I couldn’t keep up anymore. Tim would always make me play with him so I can be good and have fun. I recall almost every weekend playing basketball in the street with our close neighbor Chris. While me attending middle school, at Nazarene Christian School, he went to John Glenn High School with my brother Tim. After Chris moved out of state, I would hardly be out in the streets interacting with other neighbors and friends like most kids. I attended Nazarene since second grade. At that private school, the lowest grade you could be in to play sports was fourth grade. While attending there, I played volleyball and basketball. I was really good and enjoyed basketball more than volleyball. I became a better player as I grew up. I continued to do both sports all the way up in to high school. While attending John Glenn High School in Norwalk, Ca, as a freshman I tried out for the freshman and sophomore team. When I was playing, I was the middle blocker. It was a huge difference from middle school but I enjoyed my season. Our team was better than the varsity...

...decade, thus solidifying themselves as a fixture in the New England rugby community. In 1980, the Rats earned promotion to New England Division I thanks to a staggering defeat of the renowned Berlin Strollers. The early eighties were busy for the club, as the men concentrated on augmenting club membership via a merger with the Old North Bridge RFC of Concord, MA. Highlights of the eighties include continual success both in New England and in international tournament play. In the fall of 1986, the club defeated Boston 12-9, eliminating them from the playoffs for the first time in 5 years. The Club settled into a restructured Division II in 1992 and proceeded to hold the top seed in that division from 1993 to 1994, running three winning seasons in a row. The club failed to post a winning season again until the fall of 2005 when the men's side, under coach Fergal Hehir, made it to the playoffs. They defeated Rockaway RFC in the first playoff game in the spring of 2006 and lost to Montauk RFC in the second game. Under Hehir's tenure, Charles River's men's side ran four winning seasons in a row. In 2008, Hehir stepped down and the following January, the club came under the direction of Anthony Adams former player with the Boston Irish Wolfhounds RFC. After going winless in Adams' first league season (fall 2009), the Rat's men's side was almost relegated down to Division III, but...

...Ever since I was three or four years old I have gone to at least one Phillies game every season with my mom, dad, or brother. I would slowly start to understand more and more of what was going on in the sport as I got older. I had thoroughly enjoyed going to these games for the giveaways they often had. My mother and I would go every season to the game on Phillies Phanatic’s birthday and always get the giveaway they had. I guess by continuously going to the games and watching them on TV, I gained a new passion for my home team. I would read the articles in the paper and always keep up with them; cry when they lose and cheer when they win. I could say that the Phillies influenced me to stay in Philadelphia for college, but as to who influenced me; it would have to be myself wanting to do better than my parents. When I was old enough to understand what was going on, I would keep track of stats of all the players. I developed a passion for the Phillies and also began my collection of bobble heads and other memorabilia from various games. My favorite player used to be Scott Rolen back when he was still a Phillie. He won Rookie of the Year and two MVPs and was arguably the best third basemen on the Phillies since Mike Schmidt and probably the best third baseman in the league at the time. As a Phillie, he averaged nearly 25 homeruns a season along with a .229 batting average and nearly 90 RBIs a season. After he left Philadelphia he became a hated man because of how he left the team...

...Unit 6 Case Study - Sources and Contingencies of Power In this case, the MLB baseball players association has more power in negotiations by walking out in September rather than March because they have the knowledge of how much it will cost them and how much it will costs the club owners. The players knew that striking in March would cost them more money as well as their positions on the teams. They also knew that that the owners would not be so hard-pressed to give into their demands. However, striking in September would only have a slight decrease in their salaries but would be an excessive financial loss for all the club owners. Therefore, September is when the player’s power would be effective. The players used their sources of power and the contingencies over the owners to accomplish the results they were after. They used their influence to control the outcome. The players used expert power because they are experts in their field and knew that the owners needed experienced players to play in the play-offs, and they would not be able to find replacements in time. The player’s expert power was in the unit’s capacity to influence others by possessing the skills valued by the club owners (McShane & Glinow, 2013). The players also used referent power to ensure other players would identify with them and join the strike and to hold out until they were able to come up with an agreement with the club owners. The player’s referent power come from other players identifying...

...The NFL is investigating whether the New England Patriots intentionally deflated footballs during their victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Sunday's rain-soaked AFC Championship Game. A league spokesman confirmed the investigation, which was first reported Sunday by television station WTHR in Indianapolis, to ESPN on Monday morning. More from ESPN.com Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Monday afternoon that the organization will "cooperate fully with whatever questions they ask us and whatever they want us to do." He added that the first time he heard about the issue was Monday morning. "I can't imagine," he said in an interview later Monday with Boston radio station WEEI. "I really don't know what to say or know anything about what we're talking about here. Whatever it is, we'll cooperate with them the best we can." Patriots quarterback Tom Brady laughed when asked about the report. "I think I've heard it all at this point ... it's ridiculous," Brady said Monday morning during his weekly interview with WEEI. "I don't even respond to stuff like this." Citing a person familiar with the background of the matter, Newsday reported Monday that the Colts first noticed something unusual after an interception by Colts linebacker D'Qwell Jackson late in the second quarter. Newsday reported that Jackson then gave the ball to a member of the Colts' equipment staff, who noticed the ball seemed underinflated. At that point, coach Chuck Pagano and general manager Ryan Grigson were...

...My persuasive essay is on the MLB ( Major League Baseball ) adding more teams to the playoffs. The reason I am writing my persuasive essay on this topic is because I am a baseball fan myself, and would like to get the message across to all of you on expanding the MLB playoffs. Over the past several decades, there has been four teams from each league to make the playoffs. The Detroit Tigers are my favorite team and they are often one of the team that gets barely eliminated from getting into the playoffs. They're often the fifth best team, but only four teams make it. There is another reason why I feel that the playoffs should expand to five, six, or eight teams as people often express their frustration over peaking teams facing early elimination. I always feel bad when I see those teams who had an amazing year but still don't make it because one other team was only one win better than them. Or even a team with a worse record makes it just because they were the division winners, but in a weak division. That is why I have chosen this as my essay topic. The way the MLB playoffs work can be complicated but I won't get in to that. What I will get in to is why there should be more teams that make the playoffs. There are many reasons why the postseason (playoffs) should be expanded but here are some of the most important. Income: According to TG Sports almost everyone involved in the MLB would earn more money. This would include the MLB, the owners, the players, and even the vendors...

...everybody in the world knows LeBron is taking this shot and going to try and tie the game to send it to overtime. LeBron misses; the rebound goes to Chris Bosh as he kicks it out to Ray Allen, with Mike Breen on the call as he would say “BANG, TIE GAME.” Ray Allen tied the game with 5 seconds left and from that point on everybody knew the Heat were going to win and tie up the series and eventually win in game 7. Miami would go on to be back to back champions of the NBA. This year however doesn’t seem to be that easy at all as the Spurs are up a commanding 3-1 lead with game 5 back in San Antonio on Sunday night. You could argue on which has been better, whether it’s been the Spurs offense or defense. In game 3 they set an incredible NBA playoff record for shooting 75 percent in the 1st half. But the incredible thing is they have beaten the Heat two times in a row on their home floor which has never been done in the big 3 era. Revenge is a popular word when it comes to sports because there are always rivals no matter what sport you play and the Spurs are definitely seeking some revenge on the Heat. It has been a...

...there’s some really bad news for people looking for a definitive answer on which player is better. It’s really, really, really close. Lebron started his career right out of high school, so there was an inherent learning curve right out of the gate. The Cleveland Cavaliers missed the playoffs in James’ first two pro seasons. He also didn’t have much talent around him at the time. The Cavs went 35-47 in his rookie season with Carlos Boozer and Ricky Davis playing major roles along with Drew Gooden and Jeff McInnis. James’ 2004-2005 seasons, Cleveland managed to go 42-40. James finally reached the playoffs in his third season after the team added a new coach in Mike Brown and complementary players Larry Hughes, Flip Murray and Donyell Marshall. Jordan entered the NBA after his junior season at North Carolina. The Bulls made the playoffs in his rookie season at age 21 despite a 38-44 record and Orlando Woolridge and Quintin Dailey being the team’s second and third offensive options. The next season, the Bulls got a rookie bruiser named Charles Oakley and a breakout season from Sidney Green, but went 30-52 because Jordan played just 18 games due to a broken foot. This was somehow good enough to reach the playoffs anyway, but the team was beat by the Celtics despite Jordan averaging nearly 44 points per game. A Michael Jordan team did not...

...championship to the city of Miami. There is a unanimous conformity that both Dewayne Wade and LeBron James are two of the best players in the NBA (Waller, 2011). The talents of James and Wade can dominate any team to secure a win for by making all the shots, rebounds, and playing aggressive defense. Both James and Wade signify sustainable competitive advantage for the reason that they are talented basketball players. Each time the Miami Heat plays an opposing team, they possess two of the best players in the league (Waller, 2011). James and Wade are youthful, vigorous and aggressive. Acquiring these characteristics can guarantee a sure win. This distinctive form of competitive advantage is sustainable over the sequence of the 2011 NBA playoffs. Components of...

...THEPOSTGAME. wednesday, june 15, 2011 Can LeBron Transform From Choker To Champ? A Sport Psychologist Has A Game Plan Monday, June 13, 2011 4:54 pm Written by: Eric Adelson Like 2K The Decision has led to The Derision, and many are now calling LeBron James a choker. Let's stay away from that label. But let's also ask: Why do great athletes sometimes fail to show up in important situations? Why did James, so dominant in fourth quarters leading up to the NBA Finals -- don't forget his incredible finish against the Pistons in the '07 playoffs -- start making high school mistakes when it counted most? And is there a way he can confront this problem and overcome it? There are answers, and they go all the way back to the 1989 Stanley Cup Final. One of the Calgary Flames, coming back to the dressing room right before the opening faceoff in Game 1, turned to the team's sport psychologist and made a confession: "I'm scared." The psychologist was named Hap Davis, and he has spent more than a generation examining why athletes succumb to pressure. He thinks he's found an answer, and it sheds light on both LeBron James' poor play in and Dirk Nowitzki's emotional response to winning in a whole new way. *** In moments of fear, the human body produces cortisol, which helps its fight-or-flight mechanism. When you hear a story about a mother lifting a stalled car off her child to save his life, that's cortisol at work. But cortisol is not what a great athlete needs in a defining moment...

The game began and throughout it all you could see every fan in the stadium made sure be standing and hollering the whole game. ...Charles Allen Mrs. Rogers Integrated Marketing 4/11/12 Kobe Vs. LeBron in the Market World Two of the biggest names in the NBA are Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. With both men playing in very lively cities, Los Angeles, California and Miami, Florida both Kobe and LeBron are very marketable players. Seeing them both in the cities on billboards, commercials, or hosting events or charities is very likely. Since both are the league’s biggest names, which one is the most marketable? Taking into consideration that does the most work in the community, commercials, billboards, and media interviews, will measure who is the more marketable player. Kobe and LeBron have been compared time after time, because they are both future hall of famer’s. Both have very respectful spots on Sports Illustrated’s Fortune 50 list. Kobe, was placed at number six with a total of 10 million from endorsements last year. But Kobe being a more “seasoned” veteran than LeBron, has had many endorsement deals. The Bleacherreport.com reports in February of 2001 Kobe signed a deal with McDonald’s for 10 million dollars (http://bleacherreport.com). McDonald’s was promoting a new meal called the Big N’ Tasty and Kobe was the front of it all. Kobe has had video games with Nintendo but he was more loved for his role in the world famous game Call of Duty: Black Ops in 2010. With Black Mamba written on the side of his gun, Kobe has his own featured scene. A very key endorsement for Kobe Bryant was Adidas. This...

...LeBron James LeBron James was born on December 30, 1984, in Akron, Ohio. When he was born his mother (Gloria James) was 16. His father (Anthony McClelland) didn’t want to father Lebron and left Gloria to raise LeBron on her own. Life wasn’t easy, Gloria had many personal problems, most were brought on her when her mother died when LeBron was an infant. Like most city stories with a boy and his mom, Gloria was never able to get a constant job, forcing them to move from apartment to apartment Though the many struggles they faced, Gloria did her best to protect LeBron from violence and poverty. Sometimes she made the choice of dating, like when she dated Eddie Jackson. Eddie was constantly running from the law and when LeBron was 6 in 1990 he was finally sent to jail for cocaine. But even then LeBron was getting used to a man around the home, along with Gloria. So her brothers Terry and Curt were also around quite often. When LeBron was a child he always showed tremendous instincts in basketball, when he was an infant his mom gave him a little basketball hoop that he would spend hours playing with it. He was also most likely to be very tall and strong, due to Gloria’s relatives who were like that. LeBron’s unusual lifestyle came to affect him when he got in elementary school. It was hard for him to find friends due to his home life. He was always interested in doing well in school but studying he found hard. He took out most his emotions in basketball and Football; his...

...Mini Assignment 1 – McCain Foods Limited 1. If you were in charge of the Asian operations for McCain, how would you recommend the company overcome the challenges in the Chinese market? If I were in charge of Asian operations for McCain, I would take an advertising approach to overcome challenges in the Chinese market. The most effective way is to have famous figures/celebrities as the face of McCain. This method has been proven successful in other advertising campaigns, such as Yao Ming in the anti-shark fin consumption campaign and Jay Chou/Kobe Bryant in Sprite commercials. In both cases, the awareness of both campaigns was widespread and well known. In the shark fin case, the appearance of NBA legend Yao Ming has led to more awareness of the dwindling shark population. Likewise, when Sprite faced the likes of singer sensation Jay Chou and NBA star Kobe Bryant, the popularity of Sprite increased. It can thus be concluded that the use of celebrities or famous figures will lead to popularity in a product. As well, the price of McCain products will have to initially be very low, as a conservative society will not want to spend a lot of money on an unknown item. 2. Drawing from Hofstede’s work on global cultures, what challenges might Canadian managers at McCain face when interacting with their Chinese business colleagues? Hofstede’s works on global cultures are masculinity-femininity, uncertainty avoidance, individualism-collectivism, and power distance. The Canadian...
