...Chesapeake and New England colonies Comparison During the early 16th century and into the early 17th century, European colonies rapidly colonized the newly found Americas. England in particular sent large groups to the east coast of North America to two separate regions, which would later become known as the Chesapeake and New England areas. The Chesapeake region included Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the New Jerseys. The New England region of the colonies included Rhode Island, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, New Haven, and Connecticut. Eventually in the late 1700’s these two regions would come together to form one nation. Both regions were very different and did not share many common ideas. They were different in their views and beliefs on religion, economy, and motives for colonial expansion. In 1609 a group of settlers, led by Captain John Smith, founded Jamestown which became the first colony to thrive and prosper in the New World. The main goal of these Chesapeake settlers was to make money by finding gold, silver, or anything else that they could take back to England and make a profit on. Another goal of theirs was to find a northwest passage to Asia. The New Englanders were mostly puritans who first settled in Plymouth and were driven to the New World in hopes of religious freedom. New Englanders wanted to escape religious persecution rather than make money and grow a rich economy. The living situations between the two colonies were extremely different...

...In today’s world we see many headlines about our world’s issues yet, some get overlooked even though they hold much importance. The same can be said for Native American writing in the 1700-1800s. The Native Americans have consistently been overlooked and not given enough credit. Native Americans have been a part of our history for hundreds of years but we rarely see their news on the big news sources, and many of their stories do not get heard or acted upon. One headline we have seen on the news is the NFL Redskins team renaming controversy. Although we have seen and heard of the controversy in the news, it has been a long drawn out process that has not had any resolution yet. One theme often in early Native American literature as well as in...

...presence of oxygen. These bacteria require oxygen, and the overall chemical change is the reaction of ethanol with oxygen to form acetic acid and water. O CH3CH2OH + O2 CH3COH + H2O The name, vinegar, comes from the French, vin aigre, which means “sour wine.” Nevertheless, vinegar may also be obtained from other fermented beverages such as malt or cider. Because vinegar is acidic, it has a variety of properties useful around the house. Mineral deposits left when hard water evaporates, such as those formed on plumbing fixtures and in tea kettles, dissolve in acids, so vinegar can be used to remove them. Because it is acidic, vinegar also inhibits the growth of bacteria, so vinegar is used as a preservative in foods, such as pickled vegetables, and as a mild disinfectant in cleaning. Of course, its sour taste, which is also a result of its acidity, makes it popular as a flavoring in cooking and in salad dressings. Pure acetic acid was first isolated about 1700 by the distillation of vinegar. When pure, acetic acid is a clear, colorless liquid with a sharp, irritating odor of vinegar. In poorly heated laboratories, the acid was oftentimes found frozen inside its container because its freezing point is only slightly below room temperature at 16.7EC. The term glacial (ice-like) came to be applied to the pure acid in...

...Racism has been around in our nation since the start of it. It has plagued our nation harshly. Since the 1700s when our forefathers have founded our nation in the form of slavery. It all was supposed to get better when Abraham Lincoln emancipated the slaves in the 1860s. In which it did. The African Americans were no longer slaves to the Caucasians. However, they faced a new challenge in the form of segregation. Segregation is defined in the dictionary as the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment. Segregation was horrible in America after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. JIm Crow laws were made halting the expansion of the African American influence on America. There were laws that...

...Asbestos and Asbestos Health Effects What is asbestos? Asbestos is the name given to a number of naturally occurring fibrous minerals with high tensile strength, the ability to be woven, and resistance to heat and most chemicals. Because of these properties, asbestos fibers have been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, including roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper and cement products, textiles, coatings, and friction products such as automobile clutch, brake and transmission parts. The current federal definition of asbestos is the asbestiform varieties of: chrysotile (serpentine); crocidolite (riebeckite); amosite (cummingtonite/grunerite); anthophyllite; tremolite; and actinolite. What are the health effects of asbestos exposure? Exposure to airborne friable asbestos may result in a potential health risk because persons breathing the air may breathe in asbestos fibers. Continued exposure can increase the amount of fibers that remain in the lung. Fibers embedded in lung tissue over time may cause serious lung diseases including: asbestosis, lung cancer, or mesothelioma. Smoking increases the risk of developing illness from asbestos exposure. Three of the major health effects associated with asbestos exposure include: • Asbestosis – Asbestosis is a serious, progressive, long-term non-cancer disease of the lungs. It is caused by inhaling asbestos fibers that irritate lung tissues and cause the tissues to scar. The scarring makes it hard for oxygen...

...HANDS ON DATABASE by Steve Conger © 2010 Hands ON Database Introduction Many students taking an introductory database course need hands-on experience. Typically they are under pressure to finish quickly with a certificate or degree and get to work. They need to get actual practice in the process of designing and developing databases that they can apply in their future employment. They need to create tables, enter data, and run SQL queries. This book is designed for them. Hands on Database: an Introduction to Database Design and Development focuses on the process of creating a database. It guides the student through the initial conception of the database. It covers gathering of requirements and business rules, the logical and physical design and the testing of the database. It does this through a continuous narrative that follows a student, Sharon, as she designs and constructs a database to track the tutoring program at her school. It shows some of her missteps as well as her successes. Students get hands-on experience by doing practices and developing scenarios that parallel the narrative. After completing this book students will have a good sense of what is involved in developing and creating a database. Below is a list of the book outcomes. A student who has completed this book will be able to give a general definition of a relational database to identify a variety of ways to gather database requirements to define business rules for a database to create an...
