...Module 16 quiz * Question 1 10 out of 10 points | | | It is a well known fact that talking on a cell phone impairs a driver more than talking to a person sitting in the passenger seat. This is because a passenger can see the road and will stop talking during dangerous driving conditions. We want to know if this is only true for passengers that have experience driving. We recruit 40 participants to be a passenger during a driving simulation and record how many words they say during "dangerous" scenarios. All 20 participants are 18, but only half of them have a driver's license. What statistical test would we use to compare the number or words spoken for people with and without licenses. | | | | | Selected Answer: | Independent samples t test | Answers: | Dependent samples t test | | Independent samples t test | | | | | * Question 2 10 out of 10 points | | | We want to know how having kids affects happiness. We surveyed 100 couples that were expecting a child in the next three months. We went back and surveyed those same 100 couples one year later. What test would we use to compare their previous scores with their current scores? | | | | | Selected Answer: | Dependent samples | Answers: | Dependent samples | | Independent samples | | | | | * Question 3 10 out of 10 points | | | We are doing a dependent samples t-test and we're in the middle of step 4 of our null hypothesis test. ...- DRAFT - International Dimensions of Ethics Education in Science and Engineering Case Study Series Bhopal Plant Disaster – Situation Summary by MJ Peterson Revised March 20, 2009 During the night of 2-3 December 1984, a leak of some 40 tons of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas mixed with unknown other gasses from a chemical plant owned and operated by Union Carbide (India) Limited, a partly-owned subsidiary of the US-based Union Carbide Corporation, caused one of the highest-casualty industrial accidents of the 20th century. At least 2000 people died immediately and another 200,000 to 300,000 suffered respiratory and other injuries of varying severity. Property damage consisted mainly of contamination to nearby areas by various chemical residues. The defoliation of trees immediately afterward is clearly attributable to the gas leak; contamination in the nearby settlements may have multiple sources, the contamination of the plant site resulted from many years of general production activity. India’s Economic Ambitions When India attained independence from Great Britain in 1947, its new political leaders wanted to make the country wealthier by encouraging development of modern industry. It had strong support from the citizens, who generally agreed that India’s current lack of industrialization and economic development were the result of these colonial-era policies. Thus the new government could expect widespread support for any policy that appeared to set the country...

Hayes, Ph.D Brian.T.Hayes@morganstanley.com Antonio Ortega Antonio.Ortega@morganstanley.com November 26, 2012 Adam J. Gould, CFA Adam.Gould@morganstanley.com US Equity Strategy The 2013 Playbook We are launching our 2013 US equity outlook today. We have been cautious on US equities for much of the last two years. Our concerns around US deficit / debt and the obvious borrowing from the future that occurs from unconventional policy, the European sovereign crisis, and slower growth in emerging markets generally remain, but the acuteness of these issues appears for now to be less sharp. Our 2013 year-end target calls for low-to-mid single digit upside (Exhibit 1) predicated on our view that 2014 corporate earnings are likely to modestly recover from our 2013 forecasted level, perhaps with profits troughing during the April 2013 earnings season. Our year-end 2013 S&P500 price target is 1434, and our bull and bear targets are 1733 and 1135 (Exhibit 1). Our EPS outlook for 2014 is $110.21, up from our 2013 forecast of $98.71, both well below consensus. Improving Michigan Confidence and tightening corporate spreads drive the relative improvement in our earnings outlook. Please see our Interactive Model: S&P500: 2013 Year-End Forecast, also published today, to play with key assumptions and change assumptions for EPS...

...REVISED M05_REND6289_10_IM_C05.QXD 5/7/08 4:42 PM Page 52 5 C H A P T E R Forecasting Models TEACHING SUGGESTIONS Teaching Suggestion 5.1: Wide Use of Forecasting. Forecasting is one of the most important tools a student can master because every firm needs to conduct forecasts. It’s useful to motivate students with the idea that obscure sounding techniques such as exponential smoothing are actually widely used in business, and a good manager is expected to understand forecasting. Regression is commonly accepted as a tool in economic and legal cases. Teaching Suggestion 5.2: Forecasting as an Art and a Science. Forecasting is as much an art as a science. Students should understand that qualitative analysis (judgmental modeling) plays an important role in predicting the future since not every factor can be quantified. Sometimes the best forecast is done by seat-of-thepants methods. Teaching Suggestion 5.3: Use of Simple Models. Many managers want to know what goes on behind the forecast. They may feel uncomfortable with complex statistical models with too many variables. They also need to feel a part of the process. Teaching Suggestion 5.4: Management Input to the Exponential Smoothing Model. One of the strengths of exponential smoothing is that it allows decision makers to input constants that give weight to recent data. Most managers want to feel a part of the modeling process and appreciate the opportunity to provide input. Teaching Suggestion...

As the term implies, neural networks have a biologically inspired modeling capability, but are essentially statistical modeling tools. In this chapter, we study the basics of neural network modeling, some specific applications, and the process of implementing a neural network project. 6.1 Opening Vignette: Using Neural Networks to Predict Beer Flavors with Chemical Analysis 6.2 Basic Concepts of Neural Networks 6.3 Learning in Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) 6.4 Developing Neural Network–Based Systems 6.5 A Sample Neural Network Project 6.6 Other Neural Network Paradigms 6.7 Applications of Artificial Neural Networks 6.8 A Neural Network Software Demonstration 6.1 OPENING VIGNETTE: USING NEURAL NETWORKS TO PREDICT BEER FLAVORS WITH CHEMICAL ANALYSIS Coors Brewers Ltd., based in Burton-upon-Trent, Britain’s brewing capital, is proud of having the United Kingdom’s top beer brands...
