Their protest against the increased work norms, the lack of consumer goods, high price of food and low pension provisions took them to the Trade Union Head Quarters where they were swiftly joined by others. The protest quickly became a political one, but when not a single high ranking SED member came out to reason with the crowd, it moved on to the Haus der Ministerien, where the protesters reported contradictory messages. At first it was conveyed to the crowd that the work norms would be dropped, however the Politburo went on to offer to “reconsider” them. The part of the factory that I worked in handled the bumpers for all the cars and trucks on the market. My shift was from 6:30am to 3:30pm. This job was very rewarding because of the paycheck and the time frame. It allowed me to make good money and allowed me to play summer baseball at nights. But this job caused stress in my life that I thought would never occur. This job also caused me to be burned out at the end of the day that it was an absolute struggle to get up each and every day. This represents an increase of over 1,300 percent since the early 1980s. (Graying in Prison). Some contributing factors to the increase in elderly inmates are, get tough on crime reforms of the 1980s and 1990s, mandatory minimum sentences, three strikes rules and truth in sentence laws established in recent decades are keeping more offenders in prison for longer periods of time.
