Poetry Extra Credit Essay Leading up to it, I was dreading the poetry lecture. I figured it was going to be insanely boring and that I would probably fall asleep during it. I was thinking the same thing even as I was walking into the library. In the car and on the way in I was mentally preparing myself to be bored and not have any fun at the lecture. Hearing that it was a lecure, I was thinking that it would be someone old, white guy lecturing in a monotone voice about different types of poetry and techniques. However, I wanted the extra credit so I figured it was worth it plus it was only an hour and a half and not like 4 hours long. He started by introducing himself as a rapper from the south side of Chicago and told us about some of the performances he had done. It was very clear that he has become successful and wasn’t just a want-to-be rapper. Right away I could tell that this wasn’t going to be boring and that he was cool. Muse started to say it was a workshop and he teaches a lot of workshops like this. When I heard that, I was scared. I was also scared when he said we would have to do a poem at the end. After hearing that, I was starting to dread it all over again. I was prepared to just sit and listen, not to participate. With that said, it scared me even more when he would make direct eye contact with me and ask me to participate because I really didn’t want to. As the workshop went on, people started to relax and lighten up. This made me less scared and made me start enjoying the workshop a bit. Muse’s techniques were interesting. The lists and stories were something I had never done and I like that they made you think about and recall a story in detail. I had never been taught poetry like that and if I had been taught like that, I may have liked it from the
