...An essay about ”This is My Living Room” How much does it take before a man gets enough, enough of turning all of his surroundings into something bad? The narrator gives us an introduction to his life and he expresses life’s negative aspects through this short story. The theme of the story could be “Every man for himself” or “Every man is his own fortune”. These themes are reflected in the text as the narrator says: “People are as mean one place as they are another and they’re always out to get you”. Subsection “People”. “This is My Living Room” is a short story and it’s written by Tom McAfee in 1966. The story takes place in Pine Springs, Minnesota, in a neighborhood characterized by hostility and unreliability. But it highlights as well a family where old traditions are a part of the everyday life. This is reflected in the text when the narrator expresses his opinion about women and their rights. “Women are easier to handle. About the worst they can do is talk and what does that matter”. Subsection “People”. The narrator introduces himself as a smart man and a man that doesn’t believe in anyone but himself. He’s a man in late forties and between the lines; we can perceive him as a male chauvinist. There are likewise examples which describe him as a racist. “Niggers are better than anybody because you can handle them. They don’t hardly ever give you any trouble.” Subsection “People” His two girls Ellen Jean and Martha Kay are sixteen and fourteen years old. They are...

...Hannah Gandelman April.9, 2014 ENC1102 Literary Analysis on Hands by Sherwood Anderson The short story Hands by Sherwood Anderson is one of the twenty-two stories in the book Winesburg, Ohio. This story specifically focuses on the psychological trauma of a teacher after being falsely accused of molesting his male students. This alone brings up the topics of homosexuality and sex, which was considered scandalous at the time it was published in 1919.Although this is true, it did not stop the public from finding this piece of literature as fascinating. In Hands, Anderson’s form of symbolism, narration, and themes are what make this piece modern and unique. Anderson’s use of symbolism to help convey the meaning of the story is what keeps the reader interested and at the same time emotionally attached. Wing’s hands are the first and most obvious symbol of the entire story. They were first a source of inspiration and respect in town, but these same hands are the reasoning for his downfall, “They became his distinguishing feature, the source of his fame. Also they made more grotesque an already grotesque and elusive individuality” (250,251). Wing’s hands were his tools of communicating emotionally and literally, especially with his students. In the story Anderson states, “By the caress that was in his fingers he expressed himself”(252). Wing believed that by his touch he was instilling dreams into the minds of these young boys, “…the stroking of the shoulders and the touching...

...The use of point of view is what allows authors to paint a descriptive and always evolving story line through the use of words. It gives the reader the keys to unlock their imagination and let their mind run wild with possibilities. An example of two different narrative styles can be seen in Margaret Atwood’s “Death by Landscape” and Richard Ford’s “Great Falls”. Using completely opposite methods to convey their stories these authors achieve a very similar effect on the reader. These methods include: foreshadowing, mystery, and highlighting the protagonist characteristics’. Both stories leave the reader with a feeling of empathy and a burning desire to know the truth. “Death by Landscape” is a handcrafted masterpiece written in third-person, about a young girl named Lois. Atwood however, takes it one step further in that of limited omniscience. By doing this, both the reader and Lois have the same feelings and reactions to Lucy’s disappearance. She “stepped sideways, and disappeared from time.” (Atwood, 35) The mystery and lack of closure that surrounds Lois also surrounds the reader. The same can be said for Ford’s “Great Falls”, who portrays the narrator as a young boy named Jackie. Ford does something unique by using Jackie as a distant narrator. He doesn’t want to know what is going on despite knowing something is wrong. “I have never known the answer to these questions, have never asked anyone their answers.” (Ford, 575) Although they use different styles of composition...

...Each individual short story has its’ own point of view and voice. Within short stories there are different types of narrative and also different types of irony being used. Each individual author has their own way of telling a story; also they have a certain way to portray their story to an audience. For two specific short stories Everything That Rises Must Converge and Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter we can analyze to see what point of view and voice is being used. Everything That Rises Must Converge is a story that takes place in the 1960’s. A recent college graduate, Julian who escorts his mother to her weekly weight-loss class at the YMCA. His mother attends these classes to reduce her high blood pressure. He escorts her there every week because she refuses to take the bus alone since integration. His mother is extremely prejudice and Julian was the total opposite. In Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter this story is about the life of Mrs. Dutta, an old, widowed Indian woman who had moved into her son’s American home two months prior. Mrs. Dutta struggles with not running a house and in the midst is writing a letter to a dear friend back home contemplating weather to be truthful or to be honorable to her family. First I would like to review witch point of view is being used both stories. For the first short story Everything That Rises Must Converge, the story is being told from a third person point of view. The story has someone who is not any of the characters stating the events...

...Some of you have been using second-person point of view (you) in your papers, so I want to take the time to review point of view and its relevance to your writing. The following is from from p. 41 of your Merickel and James text. So, please read this and apply these to your papers: On occasion, your professor may direct you to write from the first-person point of view. However, the majority of college writing is cast in the third-person point of view. By writing from the third-person point of view, you create a tone of objectivity, and emotional distance between you, the writer, and your subject; moreover, third person focuses the reader’s attention on the subject rather than on the writer. Similarly, when you make word choices (diction), conversational diction might be acceptable in a person narrative, but most college papers demand more formal word choice. For example, when you edit a final draft, the phrase get rid of should be replaced by eliminated, and a phrase like pretty good should be replaced by worthwhile. Read the following two assertions: • I feel that the welfare programs our government offers poor people in this country are so messed up that they should be done away with. • Widespread reports of abuses within this country’s welfare system have led to many people to believe that public assistance programs should be eliminated. While both assertions are clear, notice how the second statement focuses on the subject...

...Points of View Amanda B. HUM/115 April 18, 2016 Nora Clarke Points of View Healthcare System To put it simply I think our healthcare system is broken, especially since Obamacare came into action. More and more people are unable to afford the high cost of the insurance plans, and if you do not get the coverage, you get a fine at the end of the year. The Affordable Care Act was supposed to have been created to help people, but with the high cost of plans and outrageous deductibles & being fined if you do not get coverage, it seems to have hurt people more than help them. Healthcare Crisis Countdown: [ALL Edition] "Polls find at least 60 percent of Americans want public financing of the $2 trillion healthcare system, something that would work the way Medicare does for older citizens. The government would foot much of the bill from private hospitals and physicians" (Francis, 2006, para. 14). I believe the information that is provided in the article is not reliable. The author quotes others’ work and talks about percentage ratings of various things having to do with the healthcare system but, he does not show any proof. There are not graphs stating how, whoever conducted the study, came up with those numbers and no external link content anywhere to verify the information at hand. The author David R. Francis seems to be credible from the research I had done on him. According to “The Fiscal Times” (2016) website, he is a very well-known author for multiple newspapers...

...31, 2012 Point of View The short story, The Lady with the Pet Dog, written by Anton Chekhov is narrated in the omniscient, third person style. “From this point of view, the narrator can move from place to place and pass back and forth through time” (136). Also, “this narrator can report the characters’ thoughts and feelings aw well as what they say and do” (136). The all knowing speaker of this story tells us, the readers, all about the whirl wind affair of Dmitry Dmitrich Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna in such a way that we can draw our own conclusions about their characters. The narrator, who plays no character part in this story, does seem to know everything about the lovebirds. S/he also explains each character’s personality and quips portions of their conversations. The conversations that we are told about give the reader insight into the feelings of Dmitry and Anna. We learn about their comings and goings from the narrator. In Yalta, the narrator tells us of the many social scenes like the esplanade, confectionery shop and a public garden. The narrator sees into the romantic situations of Dmitry and Anna’s hotel room encounters and the private conversations that also welcome the reader into the relationship. The pain and restraints of each character’s home and life are addresses by the narrator also. Whether ensconced in safe houses and relationships or free to roam while on vacation the reader learns it all from the narrator. The point of view of this story...

...Point of View There are three different points of view (also known as perspectives) a writer can use: First Person, Second Person, and Third Person. First Person: Writers using the first person point of view write from their own point of view: “I believe” “I think” “I saw” To understand first person perspective, imagine you are telling your friend about your day. Usually, when you tell someone about your own experiences, you use the first person perspective because it tells the reader what you thought, felt or did. Second Person: Writers using second person point of view write from the reader’s point of view: “You believe” “You think” “You saw” To understand the second person perspective, imagine you are giving a speech to your class- mates about how to bake a cake. Instructions are often given in the second person point of view because it tells the reader what to think, feel, or do. The second person can also be used when a writer is addressing a familiar audience. Third Person: Writers using the third person point of view write from an anonymous observer’s point of view: “He/She believes” “The philosopher thinks” “The witness saw” To understand third person perspective, imagine a camera that views what is going on around it: The camera cannot say, “I think this is good,” or “I think this is bad.” Also, it cannot say, “You think this is good,” or “You think this is bad.” The camera can only show what it records and allows the viewer...

...Points of View Lately, there have been many different incidents with law enforcement. I personally believe that they tend to abuse their power. For example, the case with Michael Brown that occurred in Ferguson sparked up a lot of different emotions for everyone. According to CNN, “One side says the African American teenager was surrendering, his hands in the air to show he was unarmed, when the officer opened fire. Authorities counter that Brown had attacked the officer in his car and tried to take his gun.” I believe that the gun should have never been fired since the officer did not see a weapon on Brown. Law enforcement uses their power to their own advantage. I’m not saying all law enforcement does do this but there are tons that do. Wikipedia mentions that, “Instances of racism occur, even when the police force as a whole is not found to be racist.” Evidently, there are a lot of Caucasian officers that have been having incidents with minorities. It is very easy for people to believe that it is because of racism. I think that the justice systems needs to work on becoming more just and fair. There is no reason for weapons if the suspect does not have one themselves. I believe that officers get a bit nervous and overreact when confronted in these kinds of situations and rely on their guns to protect them, rather than being rational and thinking clearly. All in all, we may never know what these officers are thinking when in these situations but I do know that other steps...

...religious views, but also for the fact that I believe that with modern medical miracles, anything can happen. If you tap out of the fight too early, you may never know what could have happened. I understand that the situation can feel hopeless, and one can be in so much pain that one may feel like they can't take anymore, but I've witnessed first-hand desperate situations turn into miracles. My father was diagnosed in 2009 with Stage 3 Esophageal cancer. The chances of him living, especially at 65 years old, were thirty-three percent, at best. Today, he is one hundred percent in remission and living his life as a healthy senior man. That example alone is my reason for not believing in assisted suicide. A publication in the Evening Chronicle states that assisted suicide may be a dangerous law to pass. If legalized, it could set a precedent for those that are disabled or terminally ill to take their lives as to not be a burden to their family or friends (Anonymous, 2010). The author also goes on to discuss how legalizing assisted suicide could, "create pressure, particularly on those who are newly physically challenged, to end their lives. We should be fighting for proper health and social care support so that we can live with dignity." (Anonymous, 2010). Joe Cartwright from the Dignity in Dying campaign stakes his claim in this battle arguing, "It is about replacing a bad death with a good death." (Cartwright, J. 2010). Mr. Cartwright also goes on to make his point touching...

...Point Of View The Nazis viewed killing the Jews as “justice”. They though that the Jews existing was a mistake and that they must carry on what Christ could not. They assumed that in order to give Christ proper justice, they must kill the ones who persecuted him in the first place and those are the Jews. A quote from Joseph Goebells on November 16, 1941 explained their intentions and why they were doing what they were doing. “ By reason of their birth and race, all Jews are part of a conspiracy against National Socialist Germany[…] The treatment we give them does them no wrong. They have more than deserved it.” One reason the Jews continued to be slaughtered like animals is because the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler loved the publicity he was getting from his peers whether they were for or against him. “It is good that we are preceded by an aura of terror to exterminate the Jewry.” - Adolf Hitler October 15, 1941 The Jewish people saw their harassment as harassment. They didn’t view it as punishment of God. During this time they lived in fear. The Jews in Germany couldn’t even trust their neighbors; afraid of them ratting to the Germans. “A house like millions of other, somewhere in Germany. Simple People, like you and me, live in this house. Don’t ask what they fear; they fear the Gestapo, of course. They fear the rampant secret denunciations. Friends see someone ringing the doorbell at an unusual hour. The fear is there; doors open furtively and the idated residents...

...The following presentation uses the P.E.R.I approach to understanding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Team B will define the health problem, identify the burden of the disease on the community, identify the cause of the problem, identify the burden of the disease on the community state and or national levels. The team will then identify potential solutions, explain the success of the solutions, provide additional solutions for treatment or resolution, and finally how the P.E.R.I model guided the understanding of the problem and its causes. Currently no method of testing is available to accurately diagnose CFS. Physicians go through a process of elimination to rule out other causes of the symptoms. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), characterizes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) as a debilitating severe fatigue that is not made better by rest and is worsened by physical activity. Those who suffer from CFS will have prolonged exhaustion (24 hours or more) following physical or mental activity (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). CFS can lead to other debilitation co-morbidities including Fibromyalgia and severe headaches. Chronic fatigue syndrome is affecting communities nationwide. The disease is affecting roughly 1 million Americans and public health is researching to help decline the risks to communities. Chronic fatigue syndrome and the effects of chronic disease on communities is growing, and with out a cure it will continue...

...One of the most divisive issues of the last couple years and perhaps the signature piece of legislation of President Barack Obama's time in office is the passing of the Affordable Care Act. I favored the passage of this into law because I found it criminal that a country so powerful and wealthy could simply allow its citizens to die because they couldn't afford medical care. I served this country with honor in the United States Marine Corps and this wasn't the country that I fought for. Understandably, there were a good amount of people that had their premiums increase to cover those with lower income but we have to understand the other option is to just sit back with illnesses and hope you recover. People would literally die at home waiting for treatment or a miracle. I understand that in its current form it has many flaws but we can fine tune it and make it something much better over time. Many people resisted Medicare when it was first introduced and now it is universally seen as a success and not going away at all. According to The Atlantic, the number of uninsured Americans has dropped by 16.4 million since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. This means that the rate of uninsured Americans has decreased by 35 percent which is the biggest improvement in 40 years. These figures to me are significant because the people that really need this treatment are coming forward and utilizing this benefit. I believe that just because you were born in poverty in this country...

Health care system Climate change National debt Climate change is when there’s a change in the weather patterns globally or regionally. There has been many drastic changes throughout the globes climate. In my opinion this is due to global warming. Winters are colder in more fierce and summers are more hot and humid where I live, in the state of Maryland the United States. Texas which is by the equator has even gotten snow in the last few years. I believe the changes are due to global warming. Global warming is an increase in the carbon dioxide levels due to the burning of fossil fuels. By us using oil and gas to run our cars and homes, using factories to make things we are increasing the levels on earth. The carbon dioxide thins the o-zone. The o-zone is like a layer of relation to earth. It protects us from the sun in the summers and it keeps heat in in the winters. Without it we would probably burn up under the sun.
