...so complex to grasp what one is reading and or studying. This is no different for the ancient Greek word “polis” as we define as “city-state.”(Nagel pg 1) However does this simple definition fully define the true meaning of a polis? With city being portrayed as a large socialeconomically diverse urban center and with state suggesting a formal government, we are lead to wonder if these two words blended together begin to explain what a polis really is. It is never easy to answer the question “What is an ancient Greek polis?” because everyone had their own answer to the question. For instance Aristotle says a polis was a community of self-governing citizens.(Nagel pg 1) Aristotle was said to be the most important ancient analysis of the polis system, his most famous quote being “Man is a polis animal.” (Nagel pg 1) Aristotle tells us that politeia, today’s constitution, is not just a set of laws but cultural, economical, and social way of life. (Nagel pg 9)Homer author of the Iliad and Odyssey feels a polis is formed when villages in a community unite and become large enough to be self-sufficient.(Nagel pg 8) Herodotus of The Histories of Herodotus saw polesis as a body of citizens sufficiently numerous for Securing a self-sufficient existence. As we can see that throughout time we have many authors who each carry a different point of view on how to properly view a polis of Ancient Greece. Every author has an idea and facts to back this idea up which makes it impossible to properly...

...Scottsdale, Arizona versus Tallahassee, Florida In general, people move to different cities throughout United States due to different circumstances, such as going to college, job transfer to family situations. This paper will compare and contrast the pros and cons between Scottsdale and Tallahassee, specifically, four broad categories: nightlife, climate, police presence, and beach access. Activities in a city or town make the city unique in its own way. First, the climate in Scottsdale, AZ is amazing during the peak time, which is in the summer. However, the summer won’t be too appealing for some people since it can get too hot, which causes people to stay indoors. Unlike Scottsdale, Tallahassee has all four seasons, and people enjoy the weather regardless if it’s raining or sunny than when compared to Scottsdale. Moreover, in Tallahassee, there are a lot of bugs that are present, which causes people to spray bug repellent in the summer time. Conversely, in Scottsdale, bugs are not a problem. However, both cities share…. Second, nightlife in Scottsdale is pretty significant, and people all around the Phoenix area come to enjoy the dance scene. Whether it’s hip hop, country to techno music, there are a wide variety of night clubs to participate in. On the contrary, the nightlife in Tallahassee is not as mainstream as Scottsdale. In Scottsdale, there are eleven clubs with restaurants/bars turning to a club after certain hours, which can push that number into the...

...For the greater good of this nation, the education system has to be reformed, as racial inequality is evident and the discriminatory educational system is becoming a self destructive factor on the citizens of the United States of America. In the U.S, public education funds rely on taxation of local property. These property taxes vary between different districts and locations. This variance of property tax revenues often leads to inequality of education due to lack of financial resources in the school to provide opportunities, facilities and programs for the students. This inequality of opportunities is evident and often leads up to broader, much larger social problems in the long run. According to the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, racial minorities are more likely, than their white counterpart, to be suspended from school, receive less access to math and science classes, and are usually taught by lower-paid teachers with less experience. (Rich 2015) Statistics from the date proved that based on the data collected during the 2011-2012 academic year, black students face harsher discipline than other students and are three times more likely to be suspended than white students. Young African-American students are also suspended and expelled at disproportionate rates, even students as young as preschool-level. Students of color also lacks the access to schools that offer a full range of math and science courses, which undoubtedly impacts their chances of getting...

...In today’s fast track world, where people have built vessels that can carry hundreds of people from one point of the globe to another in a matter of a meagre hours, where people have been able to imitate much of the technology, to be seen only in a sci-fi movie or read in a Dan Brown, where people prefer to keep in touch with their social milieu via virtual profiles, webbed on virtual platforms, in this world, words such as ‘modern’, ‘mega polis’, ‘metropolitan’ and the likes, are not hard to fumble upon. In an era where almost with each advancing day, we play audience to the inexorable dance of technology, and perhaps something more obscure than that, change, it is almost intriguing how far we’ve come from where we were to where we are, without...

...Kendal Foster Professor Robb Poli Sci 1 10/29/15 Bill Paper How many people today have witnessed police brutality either in person or on TV? In a Washington Post article by Kimberley Kindy, she stated “at least 385 people were shot and killed by police nation during the first five months of this year, more that two a day, according to a Washington Post analysis. That is more than twice as much of fatal police shootings tallied by the federal government over the past decade, a count that officials concede is incomplete”. Police brutality in the United States is a huge problem today. Each month you hear about more stories about the police using excessive force on a person. There have been endless cases of innocent, harmless, and unarmed people losing their lives or being assaulted because cops end up using excessive and sometimes deadly force to “protect” themselves from an absent danger. However the public had to do something about this. In many of these cases of police brutality someone has recorded it. Is recording a police interaction illegal? In an article by Steve Silverman, he states “you can record police interactions in 38 states legally, But in the other 12 states require the consent of all parties for you to record a conversation”. One of those states is the great state of California. Massachusetts and Illinois are the only two states that are cracking down on video recording. On December 9th, 2014 Illinois made it a felony for its citizens...

...George Marrero Poli Sci 101-51 April 6, 2015 During the later half of the 20th century U.S economy was the most powerful economy in the world, they set the rules for rest of the world. They established multinational corporations all over the world, which was indeed the heart of world economy. (Davis, 2009) When the U.S economy was rising, all the other countries’ economies were also growing, at the same time when their economy went down it affected almost all the other importing and exporting countries in the world because of the recent crises which was named as “GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS”. This was meant to be the biggest crises after “THE GREAT DEPRESSION 1930” (Cambridge Journal of Economics, 2009). The crises have already recorded loss of over $150 billion and large numbers of banking institutions have declared bankruptcy or being sold. (Kregel, 2008) One among the banks filed for bankruptcy was Lehman Brothers, which was Fourth largest investment bank in U.S. (BBC, 2009). Therefore it is important to identify causes of current financial crises and resolution measures. Secondly, UK government should take effective steps in order to reduce danger of further crises. (Turner, 2009) During the later part of the 20th century, that is 1973, Daniel bell published a book titled “THE COMING OF POST INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY”. The book was about forecasting to find the changes in economy and society in the United States. One of the most visible changes according to him was the work force...

...So, I’m going to have to do to this one what I did to the first one, and again, I fully acknowledge the Plinkett reviews as a source for me to draw from. The big difference here is that while I was more than willing to give a little leeway to The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones gets no such love. Plain and simple: this movie was terrible. The Direction First and foremost, we need to remember one big thing about the first 3 movies: only one was directed by George Lucas. The other 2 were done by directors Lucas respected (Kershner and Marquand). These movies are 100% Lucas and, in the case of Clones, he elected to direct a movie that was nearly entirely filmed against a green screen. This allowed him to do filming of characters against a blank canvas while allowing him to basically design whatever world he wanted around them. Green screens had long been used for special effects and matte fills, but hadn’t been used this heavily at this time. While Episode II wasn’t a full “digital backlot” film, there were tons and tons of shots that had actors doing their thing with nothing around them but green cloth. The upside here is that digital backlots can save a lot of money in film production since you don’t have to build sets that are either very complicated (aka “expensive”) or utterly impossible. The downside is that if your director isn’t, you know… an actor’s director, the actors all end up like they’re acting in front of a bunch of green cloth because they have nothing...
