Police brutality is one of the largest growing incidents¬ in the U.S today. It is a cruel crime
That often leads to the killing of someone. At Virginia State University, a survey was given out to test students’ knowledge on police brutality. All of the participants are eighteen years or older, male and female, and there was only 1 out of 12 of the students who did not know what police brutality was.

In fact, they are the only agency authorized by the state to use force (Alpert & MacDonald, 2001). Unfortunately this power, like any other, can be corrupted and abused for political gain. Racism and Discrimination According to Marger (2012), “racism is an ideology, or belief system, designed to justify and rationalize racial and ethnic inequality” and “discrimination, most basically, is behavior aimed at denying members of particular ethnic groups’ equal access to societal rewards” Blacks are viewed as deserving of harsh treatment in the criminal justice system (Peffley and Hurwitz 2013). At first glance, such an assertion may seem to be unfathomable, buy that there is an extensive body of literature which suggests that Black males are viewed as the “prototypical criminal. The survey, which involved approximately 978 non- Hispanic Whites and 1,010 Blacks, revealed Blacks and Whites had very different attitudes about the criminal justice system (Tonry, 2011). For instance, 38 % of Whites and 89 % of Blacks believed the criminal justice system was biased against Blacks (Tonry, 2011).
Types of use of force
Four types of use of force are discussed in this study each of which is very common in police operations and practices: chemical agents, batons, dog attack/bites, and vehicle ramming/pursuit. The chemical agents are considered to be more effective and less likely to cause permanent damage when compared to other control devices (Kleinig, 1996). They “play a prominent role in most modern use of force policies” (Smith & Alpert, 2000, p. 234). They are very easy to use and effective in riots, demonstrations, or mobs. Moreover, chemical agents are considered to be cheaper than most of the other tools/methods, as well.
