When this happens it makes the job of an officer harder because not only do people watch them even more, but they are forced to be held to such a high standard or they too will be scrutinized. A perfect example of this occurred a few months back when the media had a field day involving a story featuring an off duty LAPD officer and a bunch of kids. When an argument ensued the officer felt threatened and had his gun pointed at a bunch of teenagers on his property. He accidentally fired and even though no one knew the whole story, the media ran with it. Headlines reading “off duty officer fires weapon at unarmed kids” and “off duty officer roughs up and tries to shoot unarmed 13-year-old”. These headlines put officers in the public spotlight and not only make the department look bad but also put the officer at risk because everyone is aware of who they are.
