...The Purpose and Effectiveness of Police Patrols To begin studying this topic I’d like to provide a brief definition of a patrol officer. In law enforcement, patrol officers are uniformed police officers assigned to patrol specified geographic areas. They are the officers most commonly encountered by the public. Their duties include responding to calls for service, making arrests, resolving disputes, taking crime reports, and conducting traffic enforcement, and other crime prevention measures. The patrol officer is the first on the scene to arrive. What they do or fail to do at the scene can greatly influence the outcome of an investigation. The patrol officer, as the person daily in the field, is closest to potential crime and oftentimes has probably developed contacts that can provide information that may assist in solving the crime. The general purpose of police patrols whether on foot, bicycle, horseback or motor vehicle is to have a visible presence in the community, maintain public order and a sense of security in the community, build relationships with citizens and business owners, and deter crime especially in trouble spots. The basic activities of these patrols are divided into four different categories. Preventive Patrol – By maintaining a presence in a community patrol officers prevent crime from occurring. This usually accounts for about 40% of the officer’s time. Calls For Service – This is when officers are responding to 911 calls for emergency service, or...

...Social Issues Police Patrol and Its Inducing Effect in Reducing Crime and Disorders Chapter I Problem And Its Background “There is no single cause of crime that is sufficient to guarantee its occurrence: yet opportunity above all others is necessary and therefore has as much or more claim to being a root cause” Marcus Felson Introduction Police operations cover the mission-critical aspects of a police organization: policies, institutional arrangements, processes and resources for the performance of the policeman’s main functions. Police Operations encompass a wide range of activities, particularly patrol and traffic operations, implementation of special laws, command and control, civil disturbance, disaster management, terrorism, deployment of troops, internal security operations and community-oriented policing, with due regard to human rights. Police Patrol has always been the backbone of protecting the public, and as far back as society had begun to get organized into groups and communities, mankind has always had people to patrol, to show a strong presence, as well as be on the look-out for danger at all levels, and then be able to respond. And if it wasn't for the Police patrolling your neighborhood, your local community and even your entire city, then the little world that you live in, would become Survival Of The Fittest. We must tell you that in all the world of defense, police patrol is the best way for the police to defend us. High police visibility discourages...

...type of extra funding is always greatly appreciated by any group or organization especially police departments like ours. If we were given a grant of any amount, but especially $100,000 it would go far in helping our department to perform better and assist us in achieving our mission of protecting the citizens of our community more efficiently. Any department that would be lucky enough to receive that large amount of money through a grant would have to be prepared to allocate those funds properly and responsibly. We believe that we have come up with a plan that would allow us to do just that and to do it in an effective and timely manner. This proposal will outline our plan for the potential $100,000 grant that we would receive. It will describe how, when and where the grant money will be spent. How the Grant Money Will be Spent We will begin by explaining how we plan on spending the $100,000 grant money. We would divide the grant’s funds into four equal parts of $25,000.00 each. These four parts would be used to address various needs within the department. Those needs are: • Technology upgrades • Narcotics training and detection • Equipment purchases (Specifically new weapons) • Recruitment Technology The $25,000 that has been allocated to technology would be spent on automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) systems for some of our patrol vehicles. The ALPR system affords patrol officers the convenience of knowing if a vehicle is stolen while patrolling/driving and prior...

...Intruding Ima and the Falsified Report An 8-year employee of your police agency, Officer Ima Goodenough, is a patrol officer who often serves as a field training officer. Goodenough is generally capable and experienced in both the patrol and detective divisions. She takes pride in being of the “old school” and has developed a clique of approximately 10 people with whom she gets along while mostly shunning other officers. As an officer of the old school, she typically handles calls for service without requesting cover units or backup. She has had six complaints of brutality lodged against her during the last 3 years. For Ima and her peers, officers who call for backup are “wimps.” She has recently been involved in two high-speed pursuits during which her vehicle was damaged when she attempted to run the offender off the road. Ima will notify a supervisor only when dealing with a major situation. She is borderline insubordinate when dealing with new supervisors. She believes that, generally speaking, the administration exists only to “screw around with us.” You, her shift commander, have been angry about her deteriorating attitude and reckless performance for some time and have been wondering whether you will soon have occasion to take some form of disciplinary action against her. You have also learned that Ima has a reputation among her supervisors as being a “hot dog.” Some of her past and present supervisors have even commented that she is a “walking time bomb”...

...improve on this, the Anne Arundel County Police Department started an experimental integrated patrol strategy called Employing Creative Closure Strategies in its western patrol district. The experiment was limited to the midnight shift patrol squad. Under the traditional model of law enforcement officers are responsible for patrolling the streets, reporting broken sidewalks, potholes, street and traffic lights that need to be replaced. Under the new program called “Employing Creative Closure Strategies,” patrol officers work with sergeants and lieutenants to review crime data and come up with the best solution to problems. This allows officers to display their expertise in areas such as criminal investigation, traffic enforcement, drug suppression and routine patrol. Of course, as with any organization, changes will be met with resistance. Resistance will most likely come from the senior members of the team who feel like they have seen it all (like Sam Skeptic). To overcome this resistance, I would make sure that my officers understand that the new procedure is only an experiment, and if it does not work, I would ensure that we would go back to the previous method of operation. The areas that would have the least resistance would be the areas that involved collaborating with other officers to help solve cases. For example if an officer needed a search warrant or a stakeout, their supervisor would pair him or her with another patrol officer to help. That way an...

...criminal justice. For the purpose of this paper, I have chosen the e-mail survey method. The researched proposed is job satisfaction among police officers, specifically patrol officers. Patrol officers are often overlooked and it is forgotten that patrol is the backbone of the police department. The goal is to target what most dissatisfies a patrol officer during the work week in regards to human resources. The type of interview structure used will be an email questionnaire multiple choice survey. This will ensure every patrolman participates and multiple choices will provide graphical results. Patrol officers are the beginning and often the end to every criminal case in America. From the start of making the criminal offense report, to making the arrest and then to testifying in court, the patrolman handles almost every case from start to finish. Yes, detectives play a role in most cases, but without the patrolman working the street; it is unlikely crime reduction would occur. It is important to know and understand what makes the patrolman satisfied and dissatisfied while on the job. If the majority of patrolmen are dissatisfied at work, crime reduction suffers. Not many are willing to work while unhappy yet alone risk their life for unhappiness. It is the responsibility of the department to ensure that the majority of its patrol officers are satisfied with working conditions to prevent silent strikes and to ensure that the survey records “expressed attitude or claimed...

...Comments: | So me being in the Navy and solely operating a 34ft SeaArk Patrol Craft for the past 5 years. I know all there is to know about operating and driving one of these patrol crafts. I joined the community that operates these crafts in 2008 and have been driving them ever since. I qualified on this craft within a year of being at the command and was selected to go teach and train further personnel how to operate the craft. So I would be perfect to create an instruction manual for operating a 34ft Patrol Craft. More likely you have no clue what a 34ft SeaArk Patrol Craft is or what one might look like. Which makes it even more of a fun challenge to me on explaining all the details about the craft. I can first tell you about all the capabilities of the craft, then get more into how you start it and actually operate the craft. There are some technical words I would have to explain like some of the positions for example on the craft. Coxswain for instances, is the person that is completely in charge of the craft and its safety and the safety of the crew that is on board. It might seem like as you’re reading this that I might not be able to instruct you on how to operate this craft. I will be able to put the instruction manual into words that a person that has never been on a boat will be able to understand. I promise that if I can teach/train some of the most brand new sailors to the navy to operate the craft. Then I know for a fact by the time you’re done reading...

...You run through the snow, evading their cries. ‘Scorpius, come back,’ their obstinate voices sing. Dashes of black stain the fields of white. You will be found, your path traced. They’ll drag you back, yell at you for running away, ask why you did that, but you’ll simply shrug your shoulders and give them the look which they always label as an impertinent one. They should know why. Run, run, run, you carry on pounding through the white mass. It’s seeped into your shoes now, dyeing the brown leather to ebony black. You flick the snow out of your way and start to run when its mournful cry echoes across the woods, a solemn lament for you. Looking up you see it, the lone thestral. You’ve been able to see it for three weeks now. Three weeks since she, your mother, died. Three weeks since her alabaster skin faded into ivory. Three weeks since her ochre eyes failed to burn. The ground slips away beneath you as your pace fastens in the approach to the creature. The thestral makes no moves. You let your feet slide over the snow until they stop before it, hands shaking as they dangle over its frail wings. Like you, it’s broken, fragmented. Like you again, it’s alone, left to roam the world in a never-ending solitude. Its outline is jagged, angular, from the protruding bones which have been weathered away to an argent hue. The translucent film covering the skeleton conceals nothing at all. The thestral seems incomplete, as if something has been lost and can never...

...Prospects of shipbuilding industry in Bangladesh by Dr NM Golam Zakaria The rich history of shipbuilding in Bangladesh dates back to a long ago. Due to congenial geographical location of this part of sub-continent, people living here used to craft wooden boat for commuting and transporting goods. They also nurtured their heritage of craftsmanship in boat building over many centuries and transferred this artistic skill to subsequent generations across different cluster of population. Historical records say that Chittagong port was the best centre of building ocean-going vessels in the middle of the 15th century. Even in the 17th century, the entire fleet of ships of the Sultan of Turkey was built at Chittagong. Also in 1805, the British Navy built ships at Chittagong for the famous battle of Trafalgar. However, with the passage of time, the glory of shipbuilding in this region began to fade. Shipbuilding revived again when a number of local entrepreneurs of Bangladesh brought name and fame for the country by developing potential in shipbuilding by handing over some ocean-going vessels to overseas buyers from Denmark, Finland and Mozambique. Bangladeshi shipbuilders have also handed over few ice-class vessels to a German company and more vessels are going to be delivered by the next few years. Thus shipbuilding in Bangladesh is marching forward in a way to securing a firm position in the world market and at the same time, the country...
