Shaw University is a private school located in Raleigh NC. The President thinks our safety would be better if we have a police substation on campus. Also, that it would build up our relationship with the officers so they would get a chance to know us better as well as knowing them. I do think our protection here is very important knowing that most of us that attend here actually live on campus. Parents are trusting Shaw University with their children being here and would be devastated if something were to happen to us. I don’t feel like the police station is required. Tourist that come here often may start to raise questions about the police substation and would want to know why it’s there. As soon as you answer the question I think a lot of people would want to change their mind about coming. This year was the first year we had this many freshmen’s coming into our school, and had that police substation been sitting there I doubt that would’ve happened. We’re already a black college so therefore I feel like with society being the way it is now we need to be defending our name not hurting it. It’s hard as it is for an African American to get a job or to even be considered educated. There are other Schools in Raleigh such as William Peace, NC State, St Augustine, and so on. Shaw is indeed in the hood and you can look at it and tell by the area we’re in. The kids that go here I wouldn’t say we all act like we’re in the hood, but you do have those few that stand out but that could be any school not just Shaw. The point is that people will automatically have that stereotypical mind and start prejudicing before they even step foot onto our campus life. Coming onto our campus, you may see a few young boys sagging their pants and right then and there you will have those few that will think Shaw must have the police station because they have drug dealers at their school. Already people will be missing the point of Shaw being the first historically black college in the south, or even our motto of being EPIC. Causing more confusion for the people who don’t really know anything about the school itself. The police station is going to talk for itself. Since we are the first black college in the south Shaw has high expectations for itself, it’s a lot of people who graduated from Shaw, who is recognized in the field that they’re working in now. Some people really do expect a lot of great things when you hear our school name because of its history. I think the police substation will then start to play a role in how others may start to look at us. Also, the expectation may change from being extremely high to more of middle range like many other colleges. I think it’s good that
