Many think that police supervisors simply sit in the office, check reports, and simply have no responsibility. That is far from the truth as supervisors, especially Sergeants and Lieutenants, must ensure that police officers meet the agency’s standards, have the training to do their job proficiently, and discipline them when they don’t do the right thing. Since 1978, the law has been clear that when supervisors do their jobs correctly they cannot be held liable just because an officer that worked for them acted unlawfully (Unkelbach, 2005). In corporate American, leadership and management mean being an example to others and guiding the individuals you supervise to be better employees of your organization.
