Purpose:

• Social Networking: The use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to oneself. o Examples include using sites to post images, communicating with other people through the Internet, or participate in online games.

• Social Media: Websites and applications that enable users to create and shard content or to participate in social networking. o Examples include LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter.

• Although social media can produce many advantages, much research has concluded that it has negative effects on productivity in the workplace. It has been stated that policies within companies should be implemented to avoid these negative effects.

• The goal of this policy is to implement a new code regarding the use of social media to limit social networking on computers, smart phones and tablets within the Pfizer workplace.

Policy:

• Pfizer employees must refrain from the use of any social media networks on devices (such as smart phones, tablets, or computers) during the hours one is working at Pfizer.

• All full-time and part-time U.S. employees are responsible for complying with this new policy o This includes but is not limited to: Research Scientists/Assistants, Packaging Technicians, Customer Service employees, Engineers, and Sales Representatives.

Procedure:
• Inside the workplace, employees must avoid social networking on any social media website on devices that are capable of accessing these websites. o Examples include using Facebook on smart phones to communicate with another person or using LinkedIn to update one’s profile.

• Outside of the workplace, employees must not discuss anything related to their work at Pfizer on social media websites. o Examples include using social networks to post information on new projects, information on upcoming pharmaceuticals, or other internal business affairs.

Consequences of Non-Compliance:
Department Managers/ Supervisors are responsible for enforcing this new policy.
An employee’s first offense of non-compliance will result in a warning. After that, the employee’s second offense will result in suspension of 3 days without pay. The employee’s third offense will result in termination from the company.

Policy and Procedure: Rhetorical Strategy

Purpose:
The use of social media in the workplace has caused a lack of productivity and an increase in distractions within the workplace. The purpose of this document is to outline a simple and clear policy and procedure on the use of social media for all employees in all departments at Pfizer Inc. Compliance with this policy calls for an absence of social media outlets while employees at Pfizer are working to allow for a more productive staff.

Audience and Writing Techniques:
The audience for this policy and procedure includes the part time and full time technicians employed by Pfizer Inc. This type of audience tends to be resistant to change and interested in how new information will affect their jobs. To meet the needs of the technicians, simple and language will be used. Lists and easy to follow instructions are also included. In addition, the benefits are explained in a positive way.

Thesis Statement:
By following the new policy and procedure for the use of social media in the workplace, Pfizer Inc. employees will become distraction-free and will show an increase in productivity.
