Subject: Party Registration Policy and Guidelines Concerns

Dear Dr. DeCosta,

As a first year student here at Cal Poly, I realize that partying and drinking is an immense part of the college culture. Being away from the restraints of parents and having the freedom of an adult allows a college student to experiment new things and do whatever he or she pleases. Unfortunately, many college students exceed their limits resulting in severe consequences such as alcohol poisoning and even death. The majority of these incidents do happen at Cal Poly’s Fraternities and Sorority parties, so I understand that it is best for the safety of our fellow Mustangs to reduce risky activities.

Evaluating the new Party Registration Policy and Guidelines, I see how this policy was written for the best intentions of preventing dangerous activities during affiliated parties and I completely agree that our school needs to action. However, I feel that this policy is too restricting and is unfair in the Greek system’s favor. Some of the requirements to hold a party are impossible to control and there are too many details that can be overlooked. Even though these rules are mandatory, the affiliated organizations are not going to sign this which shows that the efforts made by admin were useless. If this policy was established, how is the school going to manage all house parties at all the fraternities and sororities? Also, they are going to find ways to sneak around the system which can lead to worse situations that will be counterproductive to the administration’s goals.

Although there are a lot of technicalities to consider when creating a guideline for Greek social events, there is so many rights that the school is taking away. These rules are restricting the freedom of legal drinkers’ choice of alcohol. In the policy, it states, “No kegs, hard alcohol, no drinking games, and drinkers over the age of 21 may bring one pack of beer or one bottle of wine. If the school is going to be the bartender of the house parties, people would rather drink freely in their own residence which doesn’t relieve the problem.

If the affiliated organizations were to sign this policy, how will the school be able to monitor these parties? Unlike other college campuses, Cal Poly has satellite houses sprinkled everywhere around the city which is more difficult to control. The campus would have to hire a separate staff to drive around to each house every weekend which costs more money for the school that can be use more efficiently. The policy states that a social event would need a preapproved guest list but how are students going to consider the fact that some people may sneak in. There will be a need for hired security which will cost more money.

The most likely outcome to this policy is that some of the Greek members would host underground parties in obscure locations away from the school’s rules. College students will do their best to try to party as hard as they can in that limit amount of time causing more accidents to happen.

Although the policy has many flaws, there are some good rules that are fair to both the administration and the Greek organizations, such as not allowing people under 18 to attend these social events and having to review the alcohol education program. In the policy I think there should be compromises so the fraternities and sororities do not feel completely smothered.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and your dedication to Cal Poly.

Regards,
Cal Poly Student

Health Policy Letter

...Health Policy Letter Prepared Remarks: J. Jones, M.S.N., R.N. Compliance Officer, Impact Medical Group Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program February 1, 2015 Impact Medical Group (IMG) has for several years been advocating for a Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) program to create a safer culture within healthcare. Healthcare workers have been consistently identified by the United States Bureau of Statistics, based on the information from the Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), as having one of the most dangerous of all jobs in the United States (Fitzpatrick, 2014). The most frequent injury within this field is muscle strains and sprains to the back and shoulder during patient handling. Research-based evidence shows that lifting/handling tasks are physically demanding actions and result in injury and pain (Fitzpatrick, 2014). This is because of the frequency they are carried out and the weight involved. Spinal loading when performing various patient lifting tasks has been researched. No technique, including two-person lifting, was found to be safe (Fitzpatrick, 2014). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently reviewed a lifting formula from the perspective of manual handing of patients. It concluded that the maximum weight for lifting in patient handling tasks was thirty-five pounds (Fitzpatrick, 2014). Currently, OSHA does not have a specific regulation about ergonomic hazards...

...the guidance and the right support to do so. I honestly feel like even when the kids are placed in foster care there is no love given or inspiration towards the kids. This makes the kids not look forward to the future and start thinking less of themselves. There should be something done that can help these kids be better by support. I have been doing some research and there is others out there that do feel the same way as I do. Many children's rights advocates would argue the government isn't doing enough to address the concerns of aging out in the foster care system. For instance Misty Stenslie, Deputy Director of Foster Care Alumni of America, a community of former children in foster care that works to transform foster care practice and policy, spent about 12 years in foster care. She lived in about 30 different places which included kinship care (relatives), group homes, foster homes, therapeutic foster homes, psychiatric facilities, and correctional facilities. Stenslie says she was always bouncing from one place to the next, and over the years had...

A Letter to a Policy Makert

...The honorable Ed Harbison 431 State Capitol Atlanta, GA 30334  Dear Senator Harbison, My name is Bertha and I am a registered nurse who lives and work in Columbus, GA. I am writing to alert you to a serious health issue in Georgia, especially Columbus Ga. Alarming numbers of adults are been diagnosed with diabetes yearly. As a nurse, my concern is the long term effects of uncontrolled diabetes on patients. Some of the long term effects are blood vessel damage, nerve damage, kidney failure and blindness just to mention a few. Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in Georgia. Between 2000 and 2013, there were 223,924 diabetes-related hospitalizations in Georgia.  More than 1 in 10 Georgia adults has diabetes, or more than a million people. Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in Georgia in 2006. In 2008, approximately 707,000 adults aged 18 years and older (10.1% of the Georgia adult population) reported that they had been diagnosed with diabetes (equivalent to one in seven Georgians). In 2006, there were 15,593 hospitalizations where diabetes was the principal diagnosis resulting in over $288 million hospital charges. Cost of diabetes medical care = $11,744 vs. $5,095 for a person without diabetes. Adult diabetes rate for our county (Muscogee) is 12% compared to 10.4% statewide and these numbers for our county is alarming.   Most adults living with diabetes do not check their blood glucose level as often as they need to...

The first part is dedicated to business communication and the second to business correspondence. The special features found in this edition are: 1. Examples of effective letter writing. Studies have shown students studying written business communication can learn as much, if not more, from ineffective examples of written communication as they do from effective examples. 2. Varied application problems in the writing-oriented chapters. The number of problems has been increased. While the majority of problems require the writing of a letter or report, some are designed to give students an opportunity to develop the often overlooked skill of editing. 3. Many new application problems in the non-writingoriented chapters. 4. ...Transmittal letters often accompany reports and inform readers of a report's context. Typically, the letter includes information not found in the report. For example, the letter contains information about the particular project and/or due dates. A Transmittal Letter is a business letter and should be formatted accordingly; that is, you should include the recipient's address, your address, a salutation and closing. Depending on the project, you may also need to include contact information. Always check with your instructor to determine whether or not you should attach a transmittal letter to your report. In Finance, a Letter of Transmittal is a document used by a security holder to accompany certificates surrendered in an exchange or other corporate action. A Letter of Transmittal may also be a distribution list with the recipients of a memo, report or contract. A transmittal letter accompanies a document and explains what the document is, why it should receive the reader's consideration, and what the reader should do with it. A transmittal or cover letter accompanies a larger item, usually a document. The transmittal letter provides the recipient with a specific context in which to place the larger document and simultaneously gives the sender a permanent record of having sent the material. Transmittal letters are usually brief. The first paragraph describes what is being sent and the purpose for sending it. A longer transmittal letter may summarize key elements...

...business. Therefore what is written and how it is expressed is as much a part of business education as accountancy and economics. Definition of a Business Letter The business letter is the basic means of communication between two companies. It is estimated that close to 100 million Business Letters are written every workday. It is a document typically sent externally to those outside a company but is also sent internally to those within a company. Purpose of a Business Letter The first question for any writer should be, "Why am I writing?" "What is my goal or my purpose for writing?" For many writing contexts the long–range purpose of writing is to communicate to a particular audience. In order to communicate successfully to your audience, understanding your purpose for writing will make you a better writer. Purpose is the reason why you are writing. You may write a grocery list in order to remember what you need to buy. You may write a laboratory report in order to carefully describe a chemistry experiment. You may write an argumentative essay in order to persuade someone to change the parking rules on campus. You may write a letter to a friend to express your excitement about her new job. Notice that selecting the form for your writing (list, report, essay, letter) is one of your choices that helps you achieve your purpose. You also have choices about style, organization; kinds of evidence that help you achieve your purpose. ...
