Politics has influenced the US criminal justice system with the biased and prejudice minds of the politicians that seek to make their pockets grow larger. The consequences of prejudice minds in the US criminal justice system are seen through the privatization of prisons, militarization of the police, and the criminalization of poverty. I believe the state’s view not only influences how crime and criminals are treated, but also the people’s view on crime and criminal treatment. Racism is the one of the most predominant issue the US criminal justice encounters. When politicians rally the people based on their racist views, some people unfortunately agree, which leads to their election. Once they’re in office they continue to communicated the

Racial Profiling In Criminal Justice

...ONE When Guenther describes the Criminal Justice System, he labels it something that is unequal, and does not show the fairness it is supposed to promise. One of the first aspects to look at is the perceptions and stereotypes that society has about the current offender. Many times, social media is the reason people have skewed perceptions on who is likely to be an offender and who is not. Media’s influence on crime can change what the reality of a criminal looks like to those who are believing everything media says or shows. One example of society being influenced by media is a racial hoax. Furthermore, this is “when someone fabricates a crime and blames it on another person because of his race OR when an actual crime has been committed and the perpetrator falsely blames someone because of his race” (Russell-Brown, K. 1998). Not only does this make it...

Crimes of the Powerful

...classes inform and influence legislation and policy in order to reflect their ideologies. The term ideology is embedded from German philosophers, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engles; such ideologies include the system of institutions such as family, churches, the education system, and mass media. The ideologies of the ruling class thus render the working class (proletariat) into conformity by persuading them that the interests of the capitalists (bourgeoisie) are also in the interest of the working class. These ideologies defend and uphold the social position of the ruling classes. Jeffery Reimen stated that, the rich get richer and the poor get prison, thus, as the laws reflect the ideologies of the ruling class, there cannot be equality before the law, as the law protects those who define it. This essay will demonstrate the issue of the justice system within capitalist societies and the effects of the law and policy formations that reflect the wishes and ideologies of the ruling class, while exploiting the poor. The broad theory of critical criminology also known as radical criminology, explores various theoretical perspectives, specifically Marxist criminology and labeling theory. In light of these perspectives, this essay will provide insight on the disproportionate and bias treatment of the criminal justice system. Literature Review

...Rios, Victor M. (2009). The Consequences of the Criminal Justice Pipeline on Black and Latino Masculinity. The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science 623: 150. DOI: 10.1177/0002716208330489 Masculinity, Crime, and Crime Control Individuals shape their behavior according to gendered expectations and are subject to a system of accountability that is gendered, raced, and classed (Fenstemaker and West 2002; West and Fenstemaker 1995). Youth of color are inculcated into a set of hypermasculine expectations that often lead them to behaviors that conflict with the structures of dominant institutions. For example, Ferguson (2000) demonstrated that schools participate in the making of black masculinity in children as young as ten years old. Masculinity-making is heavily responsible for the deviance and punishment that takes place in the classroom and later in the criminal justice system. To be assigned “real man” status by relevant others and institutions, young men must pass multiple litmus tests among peers, family, and other institutions. These masculinity tests, or codes, were identified by sociologists as early as the 1920s. In 1924, Edwin Sutherland discussed how boys are taught to be rough and tough, rendering them more likely than girls to become delinquent (cited in Sutherland and Cressey 1955). In 1947, Parsons noted that at the very core of American adolescence an aggressive masculinity is at play: Western men are peculiarly...

Criminal Justice

... The consensus and conflict models within the criminal justice system have very different but clear-cut origins. While the consensus model has roots that go as far back as in the time of Socrates, it is John Locke’s, 1632-1701, “Social Contract Theory” that the consensus model is based upon. When a legitimate government is established with the express consent of its people, the consensus model assumes that the components of the criminal justice system will work together cooperatively to achieve the same goal. This model hypothesizes that there is a central value consensus in society, which is reflected in the laws enacted and enforced. It is believed that the consensus model is the best organizational system for promoting justice. As an example, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies would share intelligence and other resources to help combat drug trafficking. The conflict model has its origins rooted from the Marxist ideology that centers around class divisions. It is believed that society is split along economic lines and that the wealthy enact and use criminal laws to punish and oppress the working class and poor. In the criminal justice system, the conflict model presumes that each component will function primarily to serve their own interests. It is also used to describe the conflict between law enforcement and due process. For example, law enforcement agencies want to apprehend criminals and put them in prison. The district attorney’s office...
